just finished watching the entire west wing box set for the third time...I need to try and hold off before watching again to make sure I fully enjoy it...driving me nuts though, I'd stick season one on tonight if I wasn't so scared of ruining the best show I've ever seen. Not a bad actor, not a bad episode, not a bad script in the entire collection!
Have you heard the Harry Simeone Chorale version that's available in the account of "terrydmyers". That version is 3:16 long. The photo that's attached to the title looks like a firework shell that's just starting to explode. Maybe any of the Harry Simeone Chorale versions are acceptable.
Much as I love this scene, the part that always brings me to tears is when Mrs. Landingham tells Charlie why Christmases are hard for her--her two sons were killed in Viet Nam at Christmas. "They were so young, Charlie. I know they were scared. I believe they needed their mother then." (Not word for word, but that was the thought.) I think of all the young men and women who have died in war, of how scared they must have been, and of all the mothers who grieved for them and I cry.
Lord, teach me more about sacrifice. When I gaze upon the cross, or listen to a 21 gun salute, how can I close my eyes and not ask “How can I repay you?” Lord, put me on mission to share your words of freedom with the lost, to give relief to the hungry, and respite to the weary. Show me that I too have been called into the victorious battle as I live my life in the shadow of your cross. From Lutheran Living
When a hurricane was due to hit Washington the Marines on duty at Arlington (The Old Guard) were advised to stay in barracks. The Marines then readied their uniform, got dressed and lashed themselves to the tomb of the unknown soldier. They don't leave a man behind
Do you see how the license plate says ANC it means Arlington National Cemetery. Honestly, I did not think about it until I pit the scene in context. I was stuck on an implanted memory that was incorrect and could be considered racist by some if one did not understand the context. I stated it meant African National Congress (ANC) as I had seen former African National Congress leader President of South Africa & Nobel Peace Prize winner His Excellency Nelson Mandela, on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
@whitehat03 Same here! I was in LA on business, and had heard good things about it, so I decided to give that "West Wing" show a chance, and turned it on in the hotel room. Boy, did I ever pick a good episode to tune in for.
I think this is just about the best hour on television ever. And while the cast lineup can be seen as corny, I think you're supposed to juxtapose that scene with the scene taking place at the cemetery. The same thing with the Marine trying to give the flag to Toby-without disrespecting the professionalism of the Marines, they're trying to make a point about how easy it is for anyone to overlook a homeless man. I think the director did everything in this scene for a reason-to tell the story.
One of my absolute favorite scenes in any series, ever. Brings a tear to my eye every time. I have watched my box set of the full series probably 10 times all the way through, and I never get tired of TWW
Ohhhh ... and the only criticism in this episode is that that marine that initially gives the flag to Toby but is pushed off to his homeless brother is a crock. No marine on honors detail would EVER make that mistake. EVER.
@pipercoventry Are you using your extensive experience as a marine on burial detail? Or as random dude on youtube? A mistake is one thing, being on detail verifying everything before the ceremony begins after Desert Storm and arranging that everything is perfect is quite another. Let alone in Arlington.
This episode illustrates exactly why we have tombs dedicated to unknown soldiers. And precisely why visiting them and not imagining the forgotten sacrifice born by many before us is unfortunate.
This is what WW did better than any show I know of; combining poignant music with great cinematography although the "line" the actors in the mural room take is sort of corny--just enough so they all get into the shot at once.
Richard Schiff's expression at the end of this most remarkable service is chilling; I see his face and wonder, "Is this the best our nation can do?"
Its a shame that everytime I hear someone talk about the great writing of yesteryears TV shows I have to remind them of this series. Granted it one of the few.
One of the most inspiring and amazing scenes in the show. The only times a TV show has made me stop and say "Wow" were this scene, and the Season 2 finale, when President Bertlet is yelling at God in the church.
I saw this on youtube and it MADE me want to watch West Wing (I was a kid when this was on). Took me a very short time to see the whole show, all seasons of it...god, this scene was a masterpiece, really.
I love Seasons 1-4 of West Wing...this show, to me, will always be Sorkin's legacy.
It's the part where the marine kneels down and hands over the wrapped flag to the veterans brother that really moves you. Best episode from Season One!
Also makes my hair stand on end every time.. and I'm not even american! Just shows that good directing and music (love the military drums over xmas carol idea) can elecit a feeling (honor? righteousness?) in anyone..
I don't think I've every cried more to a television program then I have this episode. The only one that comes close to it is In the Shadow of Two Gunmen from season two. Absolutely an amazing episode from start to finish.

@ J12X, I spent 8 months on a post funeral honor guard while in the Army. The normal saying I would use when presenting the flag to next of kin was, "On behalf of the President of the United States, and the people of a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a token of appreciation for your loved one's honorable, and faithful service."
@flyboy13131313 It was the greatest detail to find oneself on. The thing is, you simply cannot hang out with the family. I think that was my point, my fingers started typing and would not stop though :)
@kd0bgz It doesn't surprise me that family members wanted to talk to you. When I lost my husband, I wanted to talk to anyone who gave me a kind look. It was like they were saying, "He was important."
I am a huge fan of The West Wing, but I still consider this to be the best episode of the entire series, and these least 2+ minutes may well be the best television drama scene ever.
Incredibly moving episode. Its always amazing to watch the precision of the military rituals here -- especially the way the fold the flag. What exactly do they say when they present the flag to the closet relative -- something to the effect of "Please accept this flag with the thanks of a greatful nation." I know its something like that.
@J12X "With the thanks of a grateful nation." I spent 18 months in the 3rd US Infantry (The Old Guard) and did many funerals. The Marines were are only real competition when it came to precision and style.
I agree as well - Aaron's writings not only taught but inspired and were fair and impartial; his writings were the finest we have witnessed since M*A*S*H in our opinion. I was working 14-hr-days 2 jobs when the series started (& did so for 5 yr) and I used to take a nap just so I would not miss the show on Wed. nights. It is a mom-son fav. show, & this is our favorite episode, especially significant as Eth is a 19-yr-old Coast Guardian & the 1st in our family to serve our country since Korea.
Years ago I had the honor of being invited to a full honors burial of a WWII hero at Arlington. The ceremonies are public and if you watch from a respectful distance I'm sure the families will not object. Try to go see one for a high ranking officer so that you can see the full honors... the caisson, riderless horse with the boots backwards, the full regiment and band. It's the most honorable thing I've ever witnessed and I will never forget it.
As a Veteran I wish this was the outlook that all politicians took with regard to veterans. The series has set a standard for compassion and decency that Bush failed to live up to and Obama has yet to make a priority.
WOW. I fully agree. You put it perfectly. My father was a Vietnam war vet who got the full honors when he passed on. It moved me to tears. I just want you to know, that there are those of us who respect and appreciate the sacrifice you made. You are a hero to me. Thank you once again.
@zaroizer You are correct. There is a lot of lip service to veterans. For this particular clip, I always get chills watching the handing of the flag to the next of kin. I mentioned to my ex-wife that she is to get my flag when I'm laid to rest and she was very pleased about that (getting the flat - not me dying)!
The circle of men who served with and under me have become smaller and smaller every year. You wonder sometimes if once the last of us go, if anyone will remember anything but the stats in some history book and not the people that created it.
I'm currently serving in the USAF, I consider it my job as well as the job of those who work beside and under me, to remember not just the numbers and stats from the books, but also the individual stories and people that have come before us and laid down a path for us to follow. God bless all!
One of mine and my son, my only child, a 19-yr-old USCG now back near us here in NorCal for 3 mos in academy from Northeast NJ. This is our favorite episode. It's the one time I would let him stay up late. And being a military family, a military mom, the tears flow. Merry Christmas, everyone, and may your families and loved ones, especially your military loved ones here or overseas in harm's way, be safe and held in the palms of God's hands.
Merry Christmas to your family too. I know its a lil late, but I personally, as an American citizen, want to thank your family for the sacrifices they have made to our freedom. May god bless you and continue to keep you and yours safe :-)
You're very kind. Thank you and God bless you also. Let's all pray and help our military out there physically as well, donations, etc. And yeah! our son's new orders are close to home! for a while!! GOD BLESS ALL OUR MILITARY ARMED FORCES AND HOMELAND SECURITY, NATIONAL GUARD, AND MERCHANT MARINES!!
... as to which choir is depicted, Hollywood most likely hired a gaggle of "choirboy types" to act the part and to mime singing along with a very fine choir. i am sure that whatever choir recorded it, they were rewarded for the use of their track.
My husband and i work with homless vets in our area... This clip ALWAYS gets me... and it's part of our Fcebook page. Our motto is "Because 'Support Our Troops' should be more than a bumper sticker!"
This episode of The West Wing makes you wish people in politics took the time and cared that much about veterans and many other issues. This show showed the "The West Wing" how it should be....
I don't know about this particular version but The Boys Choir of Harlem may have a version of this tune. I know for a fact they have some wonderful Christmas tunes out there.
When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Their Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today. Regardless of politics, you must acknowledge all veterans - both living and dead - sacrifice, and more does need to be done for them.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i wish our government would respect us vets like they do in tv but with nobama in office that won't happen! DAMM I HATE LIBERALS! I fought in a war for these fucks and they do not appreciate anything!
From what I understand those Marines in the clip are the real deal. Those guys are amazing performing this detail. Lots of practice and more practice. They are the best.
I photographed (for a newspaper) the funeral of Marine Jeannette Winters of Gary, IN. She was one of the first to die in Afghanistan. The Marine service choked me up.
At one point Toby is having a conversation with President Bartlet and Toby makes a suggestion that this guy should be given full military honors and President Bartlet says something like..."Toby, don't you think that all veterans would then come out of the woodwork and ask for this or that (sorry I can't remember the dialogue exactly) and Toby says "I can only hope SIR". At this point, the president reaches over and puts his hand on Toby's shoulder. Great argument Toby.
This was the episode that make TWW so special, it was so beautifully writen and acted.. It had humour and pain in equal measures...Mrs Landingham who lost her sons, the boy that was murdered for being gay, Toby and the homeless men, then CJ hearing her code name and Danny...
Exactly! I agree with his statement 100%! It is a disgrace that such a high number of the homeless in any decade are veterans who have sacrificed for this country in ways that most will never begin to comprehend.
Yes, it's about a little boy who has no money or anything he thinks is of any value to give to the Blessed Child, so instead he plays his heart out on his drum.
That is what the research that I found said is the original was from a Czech Carol but then someone else translated it and rearranged it a bit to what we have now.
Richard Schiff deserved the awards he won for this. Supposedly he found the whole story so moving that he was wont to cry between takes. He certainly looks near to tears in that final shot of his face, when the flag is folded.
i love this. I just love it. My father had a military funeral and this brings back that huge lump in my throat - but still - this is so so powerful and moving and real. This is our military. They deserve praise.
I saw this episode today (12/23) and I had a tear come to my eye. We need to do more for our vets. Spare no expense in making sure they are taken care of. How about less bailout and more relief for our Veterans.
This episode shows what makes American's different because we honour the people who serve our country and we have standards and pricipals that some countires do not have, will never have and will never understand.
How dare you? You are NOT the only country to honour your dead. You are NOT the only country with principles (by the way, you spelt it wrong - clearly your principles don't apply to listening at school) and you're not the only country to want to help others. You're just one American who's arrogant enough to think that you're the only country in the world.
Sorry, I replied to the wrong person - I was meaning to reply to Brad44dexter's comment. Oops - am very sorry, I didn't mean to insult you at all. You weren't the person who made the original comment, I just couldn't let something like that go by without responding to it.
This is possibly the best scene in the Whole West wing - I always break down - having served myself, and lost friends.. it's reassuring to know that someone would take the time to remember a veteran.
Very moving piece, always liked it in a sad sort of way. A few past friends and comrades are resting in that bit of earth. Just wish they would give out of wars before they give out of room.
Yeah, the ending music is probably one of the biggest fault of TWW (which is, of course, a really small thing). Sometimes it comes up after really dramatic moments. They should've at least have two ending music, one more sober, and this one.
Undoubtedly one of the best scenes from THE Best Show ever, on TV. I am working on getting seasons 4-7. I've worn out my seasons 1-3 discs. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!
Wasn't, there an episode where the president,s sec talks about losing her sons in war? Anyone have that clip?

Merry Christmas, everyone, and may your families and loved ones, especially your military loved ones here or overseas in harm's way, be safe and held in the palms of God's hands.
FriendofRamblinJack 2 years ago 15
Merry Christmas to your family too. I know its a lil late, but I personally, as an American citizen, want to thank your family for the sacrifices they have made to our freedom. May god bless you and continue to keep you and yours safe :-)
SamUnfiltered2010 2 years ago 5
You're very kind. Thank you and God bless you also. Let's all pray and help our military out there physically as well, donations, etc. And yeah! our son's new orders are close to home! for a while!! GOD BLESS ALL OUR MILITARY ARMED FORCES AND HOMELAND SECURITY, NATIONAL GUARD, AND MERCHANT MARINES!!

I've seen this scene so many times, yet I always get emotional when I see it.

... as to which choir is depicted, Hollywood most likely hired a gaggle of "choirboy types" to act the part and to mime singing along with a very fine choir. i am sure that whatever choir recorded it, they were rewarded for the use of their track.

Hi,
Does anyone know the name of the choir which is signing the "Little Drummer Boy" in the clip. It's not listed in the credits for some reason...
TheArtooDeetoo 2 years ago
This episode of The West Wing makes you wish people in politics took the time and cared that much about veterans and many other issues. This show showed the "The West Wing" how it should be....

Does anyone know where I can buy a copy of this particular version of Little Drummer Boy? This is, without question, the best version I have heard.
Cheers

I don't know about this particular version but The Boys Choir of Harlem may have a version of this tune. I know for a fact they have some wonderful Christmas tunes out there.

When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Their Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today. Regardless of politics, you must acknowledge all veterans - both living and dead - sacrifice, and more does need to be done for them.

i wish our government would respect us vets like they do in tv but with nobama in office that won't happen!

In an earlier clip the President says something now other vets many come expecting to get the same treatment a full military funeral.
Toby says, "I hope so...."

Bartlet: Toby, you don't think that if we start pulling strings like this, every homeless vet is going to come out of the woodwork...
Toby: I can only hope sir..
Makes me cry everytime
EvilSam2008 2 years ago 4
Exactly! I agree with his statement 100%! It is a disgrace that such a high number of the homeless in any decade are veterans who have sacrificed for this country in ways that most will never begin to comprehend.
abfirefighterchick 2 years ago 5
What is that music being sung?
I read somewhere that it's some kind of christmas carol or something... but I don't know for sure.
MartinHall612 2 years ago
its "little drummer boy"
LDukes119 2 years ago
OK. Thanks!
And... I'm just curious - what kind of song is it? Is it a christmas carol?
MartinHall612 2 years ago
Yes, it's about a little boy who has no money or anything he thinks is of any value to give to the Blessed Child, so instead he plays his heart out on his drum.
abfirefighterchick 2 years ago
Gosh, that sounds sad!
It's a very beautiful song anyhow! I've never heard of it before, nor listened to it, before I saw this episode of The West Wing.
Thanks for the explanation!
MartinHall612 2 years ago
You are welcome it is a traditional Christian Christmas Carol, also called Carol of the Drum and written in 1941, translated from an old Czech Carol.
abfirefighterchick 2 years ago
Is it a Czech carol?
Well... I've already learned lots of new things.
Thank you again for the information!
MartinHall612 2 years ago
That is what the research that I found said is the original was from a Czech Carol but then someone else translated it and rearranged it a bit to what we have now.
In any case it is a beautiful, soulful song!
abfirefighterchick 2 years ago
Well if you say it's a Czech Carol, I just believe you. No doubts about that.
The research you found is more than what I could find - so I mean, what else is there to believe?

... by the late Katheryn K. Davis

Richard Schiff deserved the awards he won for this. Supposedly he found the whole story so moving that he was wont to cry between takes. He certainly looks near to tears in that final shot of his face, when the flag is folded.

I like the military drums that are added to the choir.

This episode shows what makes American's different because we honour the people who serve our country and we have standards and pricipals that some countires do not have, will never have and will never understand.
brad44dexter 3 years ago
a very negative thing to say
Myself0101 3 years ago 5
How dare you? You are NOT the only country to honour your dead. You are NOT the only country with principles (by the way, you spelt it wrong - clearly your principles don't apply to listening at school) and you're not the only country to want to help others. You're just one American who's arrogant enough to think that you're the only country in the world.

This is possibly the best scene in the Whole West wing - I always break down - having served myself, and lost friends.. it's reassuring to know that someone would take the time to remember a veteran.

Dont you just hate the music after Aaron Sorkin's name comes up? Its all joyful! urgh!
alexbludblad 3 years ago
Yeah, the ending music is probably one of the biggest fault of TWW (which is, of course, a really small thing). Sometimes it comes up after really dramatic moments. They should've at least have two ending music, one more sober, and this one.

@my2c I seem to remember they sometimes did the silence or am I playing West Wing musical tricks on myself.
I agree though episodes like this and the shooter should of been left silent.
