An analogy of this would be filmmaking. You don't just turn on the camera and expect an epic film to come out. There are months and months of preproduction. This includes everything from conceptualizing to brainstorming to rehearsing to planning, etc.

Things take time and things like blogs grow and grow, bringing more people in.

What the blogs will do with the growing awareness of their cause is up to them. They could, like you said, gather everyone to write to their diplomats or engage in protests. Action is obviously the most important, but well planned action goes a long way.
