@remelsheikh Same here. The previous model maximas were pretty sweet too. They were like bourgeois BMW's. Now they're trying to chase down jaguar and mercedes.
@imandanmarki On a stock 2.5L 4-cyl Altima w/ CVT that's 2007 or later, that's what you get. The only way to get better is to mod it or test on a downhill slope.
@madpistol Did you shift the trans yourself or you just allowed the trans to shift itself? I ask because mine if I floor it will shift to 2nd at almost 50mph (sort of like between 49 and 50).
@madpistol Mine is a 2010 2.5S model but I have done some 3 simple modifications to it & I can feel that my Altima has a bit better performance in terms of power and fuel economy. For example, on our trip to Florida from Chicago I measured the mpg at 34 @ 70mph and 45 deg F. In Florida @ 81 deg F and 70 mph the mpg is 36. BTW, I just read ur theory; Altima's have con. variable valve timing and it could be that the lift changes at 3000+ rpm to deliver more fuel (power).
@ericpinter29 Simple. The CVT can either be put in "Drive" where the ratios change continuously. In manual mode, those ratios are changed from near infinite to 6 fixed ratios. It shifts because you're rowing through those predetermined ratios.
@EnzyteBob117 This is simply the manual mode. The CVT in D is much quicker as it pulls the car to its peak power and stays there. It shaves about .5 to 1 second off this time. I still think that the 2.5L 4-cyl and CVT combination is one of the best 4-cyl powertrains on the market (baring turbo 4-cyl engines)
@madpistol i have to say it isn't bad at all for a 4-cyl (i think one company got 7.2 to 60), but its still a 4-cyl. but yes, discounting turbos it is one of the better setups.
This is how most CVT's feel like. My Camry Hybrid felt like that, my V6 Fusion on the other hand rail's through gears (6 Speed Auto). It actually performs better in drive than manual mode though on the Altima.
Its called a torque converter! Learn how automatics work. @ 3k rpm your torque converter stalls and lags. Try doing a 0-60 brake torqueing it (holding the brake + flooring it then letting go of the brake)
yes it does! how do you think your car can stop and the engine not stall? Unless it has a clutch of some kind...? but it appears to have one from the video...
hehe. In manual mode CVT works like a normal automatic gear box. :) a video of this car in automatic mode seems to be accelerating at a constant RPM...
I don't mean to offend you, but CVTs don't work with fluid, it works with variable "belt" ratios and clutches...
Yes I know how CVTs constantly change gear ratios with a chain, but they still have a torque converter on top of that. Can someone else pipe in on this?
well my comment was when I was looking into buying another car for daily use...I currently drive a SCSB 01 silverado 6.0...i figured the 2.5 would pull a tad bit harder.
The manual mode doesn't do this car justice. For some reason, the power doesn't really kick in until around 3000RPM. However, if you watch the video where I do 0-60 in regular automatic mode, the car pulls a good bit quicker (about 1 second less to 60) The manual mode is beautiful when running on twisty roads. As long as you keep the revs above 3000RPM, this car pulls pretty hard for a 4-cyl. If you want flatout speed (like a 0-60 run), the car does better in automatic mode.
you kinda babied it at the start rather then punching it, i got a 5.9 couple of times, an i managed a 5.8 with like zero gas and justme in the car with traction off :) in my altima
That's a great time for a 3.5 SE. However, I have the 2.5. It's impossible for me to get to 60 in around 6 seconds. This run was full-throttle on the I4.
Finally a video in manual mode. Its nice to have that manual option because when you want to drive "sporty" its nice to hear traditional shifts versus the one big gear. You should do more manual mode videos...
Yea. That's why I did it. Too bad it isn't quicker than the CVT alone. I wish there was somewhere around here where I could push it a little higher without the risk of getting a ticket.
its the same thing, the ONLY thing that changes are the gear ratios, not speed. in other words, you dont lose any power when changing gears in manual mode
I like the gauges on the previous model altimas

The 2.5 s feels pretty good for it's power, but I decided to go with a 3.5 SE. Big difference!!!

ok. manual mode is a simulation on cvt?
andrefilipecastro 1 year ago
@andrefilipecastro yes. it's a simulated 6-gear auto-manual setup. They're 6 preset ratios.

based on my stopwatch, that was like 8.4 or 8.5 to 60. which makes me cry knowing i upgraded to a much slower car. haha
