Love all this - did you make your JE Labs pre-amp? I have made the 2a3/45 and am looking to start the preamp - wondering if you have a parts list and schematic for yours.
Absolutely love your system! I read in one of your other videos that you made the rack shelving system out of rods, bolts, washers & plywood that you bought @ Home Depot. What a great idea. It looks beautifully made with such precision. Are those rods one piece that goes through the plywood sheets? I guess you adjusted them perfectly level before tightening them in place. I think I'll try the same thing - it looks great!
Just like to say really like your system. Very individual you went buy your ears not "mag talk" How does the cd side sound. I use both vinyl & cd of course vinyl can can amazing but I think cd is very underrated and sounds excellent with valve amps
An impressive collection! But I have to laugh at the Lab 80; I used to sell them and what a POS! Half of them came back. I LOVE your open back Altec 604E's. What's the fascination everyone has with the Garrard 301? Isn't that a rim drive? Are those Jantzen electrostatics I see flanking your listening room?
@49kasey - Garrard 301 is rim drive but it's a broadcast studio transcription standard player, near equal of a Technics Direct Drive! Rim drive is okay if it's designed properly. The other one, the Garrard 401 was also seen a lot with QUAD studio stuff. That's not quadraphonic, it's another company from England that made studio and radiogram gear. EMI speakers were used with QUAD, HMV, Radford STA-25 etc hi-End stuff. Even the basic Garrard SP 25 IV will show you how a Shure 75EJ II sounds!
@keplermission I used to have an M75B II which I believe was the spherical version of the EJ. I also had a G II stylus which was basically a spherical M91E. The B II sounded better.
I'm very familiar with Quad equipment, I used to sell it in the early 80's when the 63's came out. The best sound I ever heard at that time was a pair of original 57's driven by a pair of Marantz 9's. I think he also had an AR turntable with a Rabco SL-8 arm.
I only have a single end amplifier, and a valve phono stage (both home made by a friend, Valeri Kurshkovskyy), a turntable Ariston RD11 Superior with Rega 250 and DL 103, a turntable Onkyo P700 with G800 and a Lenco B52 with a rega 250 and DL 103R, Vandersteen 1b.
@pauloduque57 I do not speak Portugese (I hope I know how) but I think I have some idea of what you are trying to say especially this: "Congratulations on the long journey and tenacity". Thank you very much sir!
There is now way on earth or any planet, that a pair of Panasonic Thrusters will beat an Altec 604. NO WAY! I had a pair of thrusters...I threw them in the trash. They are absolutely Garbage! I have every Altec speaker - system ever made....To this day, there is not a speaker that sounds better. With a pair of 604s on tube amps, this small package is beautiful!! Amandaraer, you have a beautiful setup and I know that your system in person sounds sweet and smooth. Congrats!
I have a nice system as well from 1978. It's a beautiful Emerson all in one with a cassette deck, an 8-track deck and a fine BSR turntable that is precision made with a double needle even. And get this, the 2 tape decks can record music from any part of the system including AM or FM stereo multiplex radio stations. I matched my system up with a pair of Thrusters by Panasonic speakers and the sound is better than yours. I asked the man at Sears and he said mine was a good one.
I used to have Panasonic Thrusters (one activeand one passive radiator per box ). I donated it to Salvation army so I cannot recall how they sound anymore. Your system could be sounding much better than mine, no question! Because base on your component choices, your system is where synergy is happening. Which, reminds me, you should have a name for your system. If I might suggest the one below:
@amandaraer Well the man st Sears in the stereo dept said mine was a good one and he knows because he works there and said they don't make them with 8 track players anymore and my Emerson one has the components in one system and they made sure they put the best ones in there. I even have a headphone plug and I use Realistic ones from Radio Shack. Mine came with a tinted dust cover too.... I don't see a dust cover on your stereo.
@amandaraer Did you buy your stereo at Sears? Because they have good ones there. That's what the man said. Because if you got the one in the video from Sears then I take it all back. I think yours can maybe be as good as mine if you got it at Sears. Mine was on sale at Sears in 1978 for $79.99 so if yours was $59.99 or even $69.95 then I guess yours is good too but mine says 220 volts on the back and the man said that was good. It's OK though if yours didn't come with a dust cover.
Hey Shit, are you serious? The man at Sears is an audio critic? The man said yours is a good one for $79 purchased 35 years ago? The guy who owns the equipment in this video has invested thousands of dollars in this system and you're bragging about your piece of crap that wouldn't even be worth comparing to my Coby clock radio?
@oooowwwwdddd Hey dude- the guy is obviously a complete asshole and is trolling for flames.... just look at his name and you know what his purpose is.... Why there are such morons in this world who get off on annoying people is utterly beyond my comprehension, but his sole purpose is to piss everyone off 'cause it turns him on... what scares me is assholes like him can breed, and pass on his faulty genetics to a whole line of equally mentally stunted people..... uggggghhhh! That's scary!!!!!!
Awesome gear, my brother has altec horns, my dads from 60's and chinese woofers that are a copy fo focals with six magnetic discs instead of on large magnet. Stock altec x overs and altec horn tweeters
I like the colors of your components in particular. The sound is excellent, of course. I was surprised that the OB speakers sound deep despite their relatively small size.
I used to believe that record clamps make a difference on idler drive tables, not anymore. I do swear that on belt drivent TT's, clamps are much more necessary.
Hi, The videos were taken a long time ago. I had been using Denon 103 "exclusively" in all the videos up to this day. As for record cleaning, I only have the cheap Nitty Gritty RCM.
I am using an Altec 604-8G in OB (Open Baffle) with my friends XO design or Jeff Markwart's crossover. I have no experience with Cornwalls so i cannot comment on those.
Thanks. I use the XO that I think compliments the amp's performance best. The Jeff Markwart's sounds great with my 2a3DX amp, while I prefer my friend's XO with an EL34 or 45 amp. If you are interested with the simple XO circuit from my friend, just let me know and I will email it to you.
hi, congrats on this setup. i am about to plinth my 301 with a schick arm soon, and was wondering if you could give me advice on the turntable footers you are using. cheers and keep the triodes glowing!
I'm so jealous! You have both Garrard 301 and Thorens 124!!! Can you tell me how do they sound differently from each other sonically? I only have Thorens 124s and thinking of getting me a 301. Thanks.
Thanks! They do sound different from each other. Their sonics are largely dependent on what arm and cart you are using but overall, the 301 has a slight edge in bass than the 124's.
Great toys!! Finally someone "gets it" and auditions these great tables with QUALITY music! Sorry, but using rock/rap wont bring out the qualities of a good turntable.
I have a grease bearing Garrard 301 that I need to get restored. The SME 312 is ambitiously awaiting
I'm not quite sure what tonearm I want install on my TD-124.
