  • Irish women are ruthless.

  • Is either Mickey Rourke or Bob Hoskins a vigilante in this movie?

  • was that Liam Neeson?

  • PREDOBAAAAAR!!!

  • Herk, Mick-Irish... : P

  • This is the movie that really fucked up Rourkes career. He said he worked with a dialect coach for months, then the first day of shooting the producers were telling him to do a completely different accent. He also said he didn't want there to be much violence, that it wasn't in the script, but the producers wanted it to make it more commercial/action/ "Rambo" kind of movie. Mickey said he had a nervous breakdown during the making of this movie.

  • I like to see the director's cut of this film.

  • There is a reason why this was so underrated. The main character was supposed to be this specifically ethnic over-the-top hero/anti-hero caught in a giant mess...not unlike Tony Montana in Scarface. The problem was, Rourke played it low-key, which was not a bad acting choice, but it made the movie as a whole lack that extra spark that makes a movie memorable. Which is a shasomeme really because it had a great scrip, direction and supporting cast.BUT soemtimes you need somebody like G.Oldman.

  • Jesus he is so hot even blind girls want him

  • Mickey Rourke sounds like a Beatle

  • It has to be illegal to be that hot

  • Brilliant and captivating movie.

  • they said "ricky" instead of Mickey LOL

  • Good film!! Good actors!

  • His accent's not so bad in this, a lot better than many of the horrible hollywood attempts at Irish accents!!

  • mickey being so upsetting and moving as well, and those horrible bastards who are mean to her and she ends up stabbing one in the dark with some scissors YOU GO GIRL!! Fucking great film, i wanna watch this again. Bob Hoskins is the man

  • I originally watched this when I was a young lad with my brother and dad as my uncle was actually in the film, he was alan bates getaway driver who as far as I remember has been years since I saw it, but he is made to jump off a boat naked into the sea at gun point, I remember the love story with the blind girl

  • agreed tigerbay70, I remember this film being absolutely amazing, so underrated, and I agree with welshfilmbuff as the trailers do it no justice whatsoever they are utterly terrible, I watched one a second ago and nearly fell asleep lol

  • Good film, crap trailer! They practically gave away the ending of the film!

  • @welshfilmbuff i hate it when they do that. i am yet to see this film but i will see it soon. thanks to torrents. lol

  • @welshfilmbuff Wow, thanks for telling me ;)

  • This is the best film ever.

  • This is one of my favorite movie of Mickey Rourke

  • Best movie ever from Mickey Rourke, hurts deep in heart, very sensitive.

  • One of me and me Da's faves

  • the most underated film ever. alan bates was excellent.

  • This is the best movie of mickey Rourke. I saw it when i was 10. Now he won the Bafta and he might go for the oscar. Go Mickey¡¡¡.

  • I couldn't agree more.

  • I disagree of it being the worst movie and Mickey's performance. It a flawed film that looks a mess from editing. Maybe with Mickey Oscar nomination this film could get the director's cut release and with the original composer John Scott music.

  • you have no fucking clue

  • Well I hope you got a clue?

  • Mickey's worst movie? It's probably his best performance.

  • dirty fenian bastards. typical u.s.a bull shit. when are they goignto make a pro unionist film about Lord Edward Carson or james craig or Ian Paisley.

  • a film about ian paisley?

    hilarious.

  • My favourite scene is when Martin Fallon (Mickey Rourke) smoke in front of Jack Meehan (Alan Bates). Rourke is just cool.

  • I always found this film interesting as this could of been a classic film like Mike Hodges's masterpiece Get Carter but as the producers had taken the film off him in the editing process. The film is flaw in places but it not a bad film.

I wish MGM will give a director's cut..

  • incredible movie, the book is just as good. My only copy is a beta version and my beta machines have long since died. My favourite part is when he sits in front of the pipe organ and "plays" Bach's little fugue. It always sends chills up my spine. It's a movie well worth acquiring.

The woman who plays the blind girl is Sammi Davis, she is in another great English movie, called Hope and Glory.

    Cheers

  • "I SAYD NOOAH!" "DOWYN'T TURN AROUWND"Bang Bang," "EYE SUW MSELF LYIING ON DA STREAT DYIIN, NOT WANTIN TU DYE!"

  • best attempt by an american at an irish accent? underrated film? that caused far too much controversy!

  • Not a bad accent, to be honest. The director made Rourke back off his Fall Road accent because people couldn't understand him.

  • Actually you got that wrong. It's was the producers of Samuel Goldwyn who had the problem with the Irish accent. They were the one that muck up the edit of the film interfering with Mike Hodges' vision.

I like to see the director's cut of this film.

  • great timeless flick.

great story and superb acting !

    gotta love Mickey here!

along with Alan Bates, Bob Hoskins

    and Sammi Davis-

    this is one for eternity.

  • They should release the director's cut version on DVD.

  • top film, top acting, top story

  • spade121981

It's vicars for the C of E, priests for the catholics, nothing to do with accents.

Did you go to Paddy's Wigwam ?

  • Ebert basically trashed this film for reasons i can't wrap my head around as to me it's a classic and not just due to it's age..

  • Arguably one of the finest films of the decade.

    5/5

  • I remember there was a picture on the back of the video box of rourke pointing a shotgun into a guys mouth, but in the movie there was no such scene!Over in the u.k. this movie is billed as "A dying prayer"

  • Why is it in some scenes rourke has obvious dyed red hair and yet in other scenes his hair is dark brown?Couldn't the people doing the hair and makeup make up their minds. And since when does a guy with red hair have brown stubble as a start for a beard?

  • such a bad movie LOL

  • Dude, it's got everything in it needed including an incredibly charismatic performance by Rourke. If you can't relate, maybe the problem is you?!!!

  • If you think this was a good movie i'd hate to see what you think is a bad movie. This movie bombed and rourke's fake irish accent comes and goes throughout the whole movie. This was the first of a string of bombs for rourke. If you can't relate to this then YOU are the one who has the problem LOL

  • So you are claiming whether a movie "bombed" is a commentary on whether it has merit? That notion is false on it's face. Second, having lived in Ireland I can tell you Rourke nailed the Falls Road accent in all its glory.

Please run along to share your "expertise" on the next thread, Cap'n Debunker.

  • That movie helped nobodies career.Since you like Ireland so much maybe you can run along and stay there permanently with the IRA supporting scum. You obviously don't recognise a shit boring movie with phoney accents when you see one shit for brains.

  • It wasn't a pro-IRA movie. The accent was spot on but you'd have to know Irish accents are not all from Dublin.

But Tanks for the input, John O'Huston.

  • Not pro Ira.Gimme a break. At the beginning their trying to blow up a truck full of British soldiers!No... some of the accents are from shitholes like Belfast.Oh by the way Rourke has a pro IRA tattoo on his forearm shit for brains...but thanks for the input. If you need to know anything else (since you don't know anything yourself) let me know.

  • the message is clear. you only have to watch the movie. it ain't a ira supoorting movie. eventhough rourke has irish roots and did movies of which he donated his wages to the ira apparently.

  • And another thing they geot wrong in the movie is that in Ireland and England there called vicars not priests. They just used the word priest so north american audiences would understand.LOL.I also travelled extensively through europe and know a lot of Irish people live in Liverpool.Your not the only one that knows about accents pal.

  • Obviously if it bombed it wasn't a good movie.Infact when was the last time Rourke made a good movie.Maybe in 87 with Angel Heart or perhaps 89 with Johnny Handsome. He certainly hasn't done anything good since then until Sin City. All his other movies during those years bombed.Wild orchid, ftw, last ride, point blank, another 9 half weeks, exit in red,get carter, spun etc...

  • Oh I forgot Harley Davidson and the Marboro man, thursday, animal factory, picture claire ...all bombs.

  • I guess a person having red hair has brown stubble is false notion too eh?But I guess you were listening to his phoney accent too much and not paying attention too the details.LOL

  • There are days on which I go back to this movie. Today is such a day...

  • too bad you can't get that movie on dvd in my area

  • I just love this movie. It's one of my favorite...thnx for uploading!;-)

  • Thank you. i do too....

  • Havent seen it since I was small. Would love to see it all again. Well done to who added this.
