I have seen some of the home made mills on the web and a number use car tires. A quick search for the drive wheels you used here and they are around 500 to 1000 bucks!
What did you buy and where from? How much did they cost?
@TheBlairHouseProject When you find the model of bandsaw just call them or order online for the part# you want. After you get you part you can have any machine shop make the shafts for around 170 to 200 bucks, next you go to a bearing specialty shop and ask them to show you some pillow bearings that fit snug, you need two pillow bearings on each side. From this point every thing else will be easy enough to figure out.
@TheBlairHouseProject Car tires eat up all your energy. You need a high horse power motor to drive them. You also have to keep the air pressure right and you need a longer blade because of their circumference. I bought two ALUMINUM drive style tires from PGSAW on ebay. The wheels alone were $90 for the set. If you get the steel wheels then they will be like 3-400$. If you really want a nice set I suggest that you look up part #s on wheels from a stand up brand of Bandsaws like Jet.
@Larenzoid Trust me, I am paranoid when I mess with power tools. I have had my fair share of stitches in my time! lol I will really have to be on guard when I build the resaw accessory for this mill. Thanks for the view and comment.
how hard is it to get the wheels to track correctly? in other words is it hard to get the wheels lined up perfectly or do they not need to be perfect?
@ironlionkalo The wheels might only be toed out 3 to 5 degrees and the crown on the wheels helps to compensate for errors, so no not really. You will suprise yourself, just give it a shot.
The size on mine is 10 feet 3 inches, but it is a custom blade. I bought mine from Goss Rental in Zanesville ohio, just google them or find a tool rental place near by. These blades are about $25.00. It is very common to have these blades custom made because of the variety of machines that turn them. So in short find a local dealer of blades and buy from them, they are cheap. I use a 1 inch wide which actually measures 1.25inches.
Nice work!

Nice machine. It looks sturdy and with the 5hp motor I imagine it has all the power it needs. Have fun with it, but be careful.
