A great cover, one of the best i've heard on youtube. The only problem I have with most of the covers of these songs is that when guys sing it, there voice lacks the bass that Donny's had, so it sounds just a tad high and empty, they don't have the rich bass in their voice nor do they hit all the runs correctly, and if they can't do the run they change the part to suit their voice, and it sounds nice don't get me wrong, but it lacks the full effect of the original.

I've checked out Marc Broussard (of course already knew him) and he does a marvelous job. But I get more shiffers up my skin by Boris performance. So soulful, so intense, so pure.
He has a nice smooth texture to his voice but I'd like to see him push it. Kinda wimped out and used his falsetto when he needed to take a deep breath and belt it out towards the end of the song as it crescendos.
For me, second to Donnie would be Marc Broussard on this one. Marc just puts so much of himself into the song when he sings it - something I really appreciate as a listener. Take more risks Boris - I'm sure it will pay off.

Look for his Ray Charles tribute compilation - insanely good . I wish there were full tracks of I 've Got a Woman, Drown in my Own Tears , etc - he has more soul in one finger than most have in their entire bodies : )

I'm in the US and until this moment I'd never heard of this guy. I must say, he is DYNAMIC! Probably the best professional male vocalist I've heard in a long time. He sings with soul, passion, and conviction. If he's not accepted in his homeland, ship his cute ass to America! The world needs to know who this guy is!
It's such a shame that he became famous through something like Idols...Here in the Netherlands people don't seem to take those people seriously, none of the Dutch Idols candidates made career in the music buisiness, while a few of them were brilliant. Shame.

I just heard that another Dutch singer - Gordon - will record an album full of Donny Hataway's covers. He's an OK singer, but it should have been Boris covering Donny. He does him true justice.

Gordon has a horrible personality. Was voted most annoying television figure (hence, not 'artist', he presents mostly) here. Boris declined the offer to do a duet with Gordon when he asked back in 2003, when Boris was still in unknown band 'Sofuja'. I don't think Gordon ever got over that...
I love Elliot! His control is brilliant! Based on voice only, he would've won AI. Found out bout Elliot throught his fans who like Boris ;p. They're both huge Donny fans and they can sing Donny songs anytime.
Doogleandalix...can't you just download Boris's songs by downloading a music programme such as limewire or kazaa? As far as I know you can download music from all over the world with those programmes.

the problem is that you can't get really famous with idol, not in america either... i don't know any american idols except for kelly clarkson... and that was when the concept was new, he should go to the US anyway, better writers and producers, dutch producers are just to scared (and cheap xD) to make a really good soulalbum, and they dont know how to either... But he really shouldnt join american idol, that would be a waste, just like it was a waste to join dutch idol
the difference between the Dutch and American Idol is that in Holland they kinda make fun of you. The image of Idols here is a big no no because the quality of the (early) Dutch participants is bad. They often have no credibility/actual talent. So when you ARE talented like Boris, they have to work way harder to get people's respect. No matter how talented. Plus the recordlabel only wants to see cash for their first albums and than they don't care for shit, moving on to the next hyped idol.
I know a few, Carrie Underwood, Elliot Yamin, Fantasia and a few others. But these 3 I've personally heard on Dutch radio ;) Buts it's definitely true that in Holland, Idol contestants are often rediculed. It's not about their succes perse, but I believe US contestants do have credibility/get respect. Not what you can say for Holland. Everybody know this here..

depends, the first wasn't really what he wanted to do (which was doing soul). It's called 'rely on me' and a bit more pop-ish/mainstream. 2nd 'Holy Pleasure' was a bit more funky and soulful and it won an Edison(kinda like a grammy)right after he and his lable decided to part ways. 3rd album should be really how he wants it to be...having no contract at the moment at all..

He has been very very respected in the musicbizz. Literally hear musicians say that bout him. But it seems to be the Dutch audience. And yes, they tend do go for folkmusic and easy pop mainstream songs. The musicians who make serious music seem to be more in the background. However, it's these people who are respected. Not the ones you see on #1 evertime.

I can't believe he is not HUGE in the Netherlands with that amazing voice and his exposure with Sofuja and Idol Tv Show .
With youtube and MySpace he can get the attention of a lot of listeners and we can enjoy his wonderful music.
I hope he does not wait to long to try to " make it" in the U.S With the popularity of the Idol stars , I would think it would not be difficult to market him.
If his CD was on Amazon, it would sell!That's how I discovered the Australian Idol(Callea's).

I have to admit, he sounds great in this video! But his problem is that when he starts singing a bit louder and all, when he's picking up a more funky song, his voice sounds a bit small, like he doesn't have enough air to really push it... I still like him as a singer though, but I had a preformance with him (check my vids) and most of the professional musicians I spoke said the same thing about him, just not enough power, and still he hardly sings such a beautiful songs like this, which he can

Then he should stick with soulful or bluesy numbers because they are his forte . His pop music is good , and I understand that record companies think that will appeal to the masses, but when you are as soulful as Boris, stay true to your heart - a Cd of all Donny Hathaway covers would be a best seller !!

Sorry Missystar212, I know it's obvious, but I meant type it in the search box and then click search. If you watch the film to hear a great voice, you won't get that, but it's a really touching film. Rosemary Clooney sounds pretty good at the end, older style than Donny and Boris.

This song is sung twice in the 2007 film, "Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont" (it won the BBC AARP 2007 award), Rupert Friend has Dame Olivier, (Joan Plowright), in tears in the film when he sings this song to her and he's no Donnie Hathaway, but he's so heartfelt you're crying. He sang this song to Joan as his audition piece and that's how he got the part in the film. Rosemary Clooney sings it again as a voiceover at the end. Touching, beautiful film, clips on YouTube.

Just type in: Mrs. Palfrey At The Claremont. You will only see clips from the film, not hear the songs. Rupert Friend is no comparison to Donny or Boris, but in the context of the film, the scene is very touching, and then Rosemary Clooney sings it at the end as a voiceover.

I just heard that another Dutch singer - Gordon - will record an album full of Donny Hataway's covers. He's an OK singer, but it should have been Boris covering Donny. He does him true justice.

You've gotta be kidding me. Gordon? Ugh. Worst attitude, almost literally thinks he's all that though the last song (cover) he did I can remember is like in 1995, can basically ONLY do covers, is probably totally gonna commerialize the songs. ::shivers:: I LOVE Boris here, but I woundn't even want him to do a Donny cover album. It's just better not to touch them and very hard to top.

Not familiar with Gordon at all as I am in the U.S., but I agree that if ANYONE were to do an album of Donny covers , the only one it should be is Boris .
I do like a few of the Hathaway covers that Elliot Yamin did on American idol ( he is reportedly a huge Donny fan) , but I have to say Boris is much more soulful than Elliot !
I would be thrilled to see that Boris did such an album - it would make him world famous, I'd bet.

Gordon has a horrible personality. Was voted most annoying television figure (hence, not 'artist', he presents mostly) here. Boris declined the offer to do a duet with Gordon when he asked back in 2003, when Boris was still in unknown band 'Sofuja'. I don't think Gordon ever got over that...

Doogleandalix...can't you just download Boris's songs by downloading a music programme such as limewire or kazaa? As far as I know you can download music from all over the world with those programmes.

I will content myself to listen to Boris on youtube daily for now until he comes to the U.S. which , I hope , is just a matter of time . The man is an awesome talent and deserves worldwide recognition!

Thanks, montagne. I went to the website and can hear snippets of the music but I really want a hard copy of a cd - I really think he would do well if they were available through Amazon for U.S. purchse.

After seeing this.. and all the other idols over the world.. i truly believe its a waste he's dutch... he's definately one of the best vocalists around here in this millenium...(and i am not a sick fan.. just one who loves pretty sounds) he should be in front of the american judges.. they would prob value him for what he's worth)

the problem is that you can't get really famous with idol, not in america either... i don't know any american idols except for kelly clarkson... and that was when the concept was new, he should go to the US anyway, better writers and producers, dutch producers are just to scared (and cheap xD) to make a really good soulalbum, and they dont know how to either... But he really shouldnt join american idol, that would be a waste, just like it was a waste to join dutch idol

the difference between the Dutch and American Idol is that in Holland they kinda make fun of you. The image of Idols here is a big no no because the quality of the (early) Dutch participants is bad. They often have no credibility/actual talent. So when you ARE talented like Boris, they have to work way harder to get people's respect. No matter how talented. Plus the recordlabel only wants to see cash for their first albums and than they don't care for shit, moving on to the next hyped idol.

I know a few, Carrie Underwood, Elliot Yamin, Fantasia and a few others. But these 3 I've personally heard on Dutch radio ;) Buts it's definitely true that in Holland, Idol contestants are often rediculed. It's not about their succes perse, but I believe US contestants do have credibility/get respect. Not what you can say for Holland. Everybody know this here..

Ook Jordin Sparks, Elliot Yamin doen het erg goed. En zo zijn er nog meer idols die het heel goed doen in Amerika!

depends, the first wasn't really what he wanted to do (which was doing soul). It's called 'rely on me' and a bit more pop-ish/mainstream. 2nd 'Holy Pleasure' was a bit more funky and soulful and it won an Edison(kinda like a grammy)right after he and his lable decided to part ways. 3rd album should be really how he wants it to be...having no contract at the moment at all..

The first time I heard Boris perform this song I had tears in my eyes. True perfection.
Too bad the Dutch will never appreciate him the way he deserves. (Not to be offensive, but over here most people like rock music or quiet ordinary, average kind of simple Dutch popsongs).

He has been very very respected in the musicbizz. Literally hear musicians say that bout him. But it seems to be the Dutch audience. And yes, they tend do go for folkmusic and easy pop mainstream songs. The musicians who make serious music seem to be more in the background. However, it's these people who are respected. Not the ones you see on #1 evertime.
