This is a BIG issue. Remember the news in Fallujah in 04 about American "civilians" being dragged through the street and hung from bridges? That lead to us storming Fallujah. Two years or so later, we hear about Blackwater and their corrupt actions when they massacred some 28 innocent people claiming there was a car bomb. Turned out false. Then it turns out the "Civilians" that were dragged through the street in Fallujah were in fact Blackwater soldiers. I hung my head in shame at that moment.

As for the situation in Iran, people need only check the Iranian Queer Organization's web site. This group of Iranian gay activists is the only gay Iranian organization, and had to form in Toronto due to police beating and torture of gay people in Iran.
As they note on their home page, "In the Iranian Islamic Penal Code, homosexuality is illegal and punishable by death." Hardly "very safe."

Secondly, they are not the only same sex group in Iran. If you visit any of the gay bars in Tehran, you can easily get in touch with other groups.
