Steve Garvey must have his number retired at Dodger Stadium!
If the Padres can retire his number for only the 5 years he spent in San Diego. Why couldn't the Dodgers do the same? Steve Garvey was always My Favorite Dodger!
i'll always remember Garvey for kicking ass against the Cubs in the 84 NLCS as a Padre in those throwback (now) funky brown, yellow and white uniforms...too bad the whole team ran into the machine that was the 84 tigers....would have ranked as one of the greatest upsets of all time had SD managed to win that series .
Steve Garvey was my baseball hero for years. I had a similar build and played first base and modeled myself after him on the field. He it with power, very good BA and was very consistent and durable.
Very cool to see this commercial from my youth, and I remember what a top player Garvey was at the time.
But does anyone else notice the strange tone of the catcher at the start of the commercial? He clearly sounds like a gay man who's interested in Garvey. It's only when the catcher says "my girl" that tells the audience that he's hetero.
Yes. Garvey also upset quite a few Cub fans with his playoff home run as a Padre. My friend still feels that was the year the Cubbies should have won it.
@48speed ....i agree although i was going for the Padres i think the Cubs were the better team i think the Padres peaked in that series...definitely think the Cubs would have been better competition for the Tigers
I rember that commercial .... struck me as odd at the time because he had a distinctive batting stance in games that was different from this commercial. He always stood upright with legs fairly straight and kept his hands still. He never bent his knees and waved the bat around like in this commerical.
Some day Garvey will get into the Hall of Fame, his plaque will simply state "Used Aqua Velva"

I hates Steve Garvey. He always killed my team in the playoffs. He should be in the HOF for his clutch hitting ability.

Simplistic, but enjoyable commercial that is charming.

Garvey was my favorite baseball player. It's cool to see him in this commercial when he was in the prime of his career.
