Sharks are always a possibility but the danger from drowning is much greater. We've had 7 people die this year while ab diving and none have been eaten by sharks. If you avoid seal colonies and keep away from open water, the danger from sharks is minimal.
My rule is I will only pull abs that are 9 inches or above. Small abs don't interest me. My main goal is to pull trophies since I'm not that crazy about eating them. If I don't see one, I will happily leave the small ones alone to grow bigger.
Just around Fort Ross. I wouldn't recommend the spot I was at though, there was a bitch of a current, tons of tule grass which obscured your vision, and the flies were everywhere!
so were would u recommend then? im from chico and we usually drive to mendocino to dive and that is a pretty far drive and 9 inchers are super hard to find. This year 8 1/2 were hard to find.
I'm going to try Salt Point State Park or Sea Ranch the next time around. I've heard alot of 10 inchers get pulled from around that area. The key to finding big ones is simply to dive in an area that has little diving pressure and hard to access. Which is why I hiked down that steep cliff!
i eat 7.5" ones, they taste bit salty, i make a soup of them. they are very tough when cook well.......chew my teeth off! Abdiver got such huge one, an envy of all us shorepicker! :)
Right about there man, just alot higher up the cliff!

Thanks for the info. I've always wanted to visit New Zealand to try some mako and tuna fishing, and now I'll have to add abdiving to that agenda too!

Thats a massive ab man.
Good job!!!!
I started freediving about a month back and im hooked on it!!!
First day i got my limit at 25-30ft.
Where do you dive most???

I always dive in Sonoma around the Fort Ross/Red Barn area. Mendocino is too far to drive and the diving isn't that much better anyway!
