Apparently back in the day, college kids across the nation (including my parents) bought Slim Whitman's CD advertised on TV as a joke to give to friends as a gag gift. Guess they thought it was funny because the commercials touted him as such a massively successful artist, but the younger crowd had never heard of him and thought he sounded funny.
