and I thought Frank Ifield was the only one that did this song that's been floating in my head for 50 yrs. This was truly great. Slim Whitman just made my day a whole lot better.
Andy Kaufmann was known for pulling unscripted stunts that made for awkward moments with his guests. Ol' Slim looks like the kind who wouldn't have put up with it. I have an odd feeling before the show, Slim took Andy aside and told him "If you pull one of your stunts and embarass me, I'll slice your manhood off."
Absolut fantastisch. Geen andere woorden voor ik ben hier mee op gegroeid mijn paps draaide dit altijd en ken elk nummer dromen. Ik geef het nu door aan mijn kids ;-)
Absolut fantastic. No other words I grew up here with my dad played this. I can dream every number and know every song. I pass it on to my kids now;-)
What a performance!! Slim and Andy together! Wow! Didn't know they ever met although I knew Andy was a big fan! Sure miss the old guys! They make today's entertainers sound like braying asses. When will they invent a time machine so we can all go back and see real performances again?!!
@falcondriver100 ..this is an original version and exceedingly well done. Lip-sync....no way. A classic live performance by the master. I'm with you, Falcon, on this one!!
The Great Slim Whitman was born with the gift of a beautiful voice- thank goodness he shared it with us all. A Legend in his lifetime. I have most of the 600 songs he recorded! Marje Morgan Wrexham North Wales Great Britain...And a member of the Slim Whitman Appreciation Society on Facebook...
@constellationuss Really? I belive It said on the back of some record that Slim Whitmans father worked as a shipworker and he followed him in the trade when he was young, I wonder if thats when he injured his finger?
What a voice! That yodeling makes him different from other artists like Elvis and Tom Jones etc.., I also noticed another difference, That he`s left handed, You can tell from his guitar.
@xmoroseguyx He's right-handed. He lost two fingers on his left hand in a meat packing plant accident in Jacksonville when he was young, which forced him to play the guitar left-handed since all fingers are needed to play chords.
I always loved this I Remember You melody from hearing jazz bebop alto saxists, Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean, doing it. But NOBODY has done a better version of this song than here pictured, and being sung by a true master of the art, Slim Whitman. He's performed some beautiful Christmas albums too.
This arrangement (i.e with the yodel) sounds very similar to the one done by Frank Ifield (also posted on this page). Does anyone know which came first?
Also a factor in Slim's resurgence during this time was Carson's Tonight Show. Nice to see Andy behaving on the side. I believe he was sincere about this. BTW, Slim still lives!

Heavens to Murgatroid! What a clip! I've always loved this romantic ballad. Mr Whiteman gives it his own lively & special twist. He has such a unique voice. THANKS for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us! You've made my day & my weekend! May ALL your wishes & dreams come true in the New Year! :)
I found out that the actual feat was that he held the #1 record position in England for longer than Elvis or the Beatles. Which stayed in the Guiness book of World Records for about 35 years until Bryan Adams broke that record with" Everything I do I do for you"
Wikipedia states that in 1980, there was a TV commercial that claimed Whitman "was number one in England longer than Elvis and The Beatles". I don't know of any other sources to back that up, but it seems a rather bold claim to make without being able to substantiate. In other words, I don't think that it would have been said unless it were either true or close enough to true that they could get away with saying it.
@theslothmonkey Slim Whitman did indeed hold the title of the longest stay at number one. This was eleven consecutive weeks on the UK charts in1955 for the record Rose Marie. This title was held for thirty seven years, until beaten by Brian Adams.
The reason you think he is lip syncing is that he performed it so perfectly - like it was a studio version. However, he DID perform it live. You didn't watch close enough. Also watch the other band members strumming away - especilally on the pedal steel guitar - you don't fake that.
same with me ! . I saw him and met him on many a time in the Uk and he always had time for us . I remember the first time i saw him and met him at the Round House in Wakefield . Slim always waved to me after that and would come and speak with my dad n mum after the shows if he had time .

Beautiful song, and a wonderful rendition. It's NOT tape... if you watch his throat in the close up shots, you can see the muscular contractions causing the vibrato in his voice......watch closely, because thats not something that can be faked.
ya he's lip syncing you can tell around 1:17 when he says the words "your the one" the word "your" is ahead of his lips about half of a second ..put the video in full screen and watch closely ..even if he was lip syncing ..your forgetting 1 thing IT REALLY WAS HIM just not live ..so no big deal its still slim singing who cares if its a tape or not
Remember that video quality wasnt what it is now..so the video may have gotten a bit messed up for many reasons..the way it was uploaded, where it came from.. the age..so it may seem like hes lip syncing, but he is not. His voice really is that beautiful.
Slim Whitman looks like the wolf from the cartoons that used to whistle.

ya he's lip syncing you can tell around 1:17 when he says the words "your the one" the word "your" is ahead of his lips about half of a second ..put the video in full screen and watch closely ..even if he was lip syncing ..your forgetting 1 thing IT REALLY WAS HIM just not live ..so no big deal its still slim singing who cares if its a tape or not

Remember that video quality wasnt what it is now..so the video may have gotten a bit messed up for many reasons..the way it was uploaded, where it came from.. the age..so it may seem like hes lip syncing, but he is not. His voice really is that beautiful.

@Fma42081 It's very rare, if at all that Slim Whitman lip synched.
He could sing live with no problems at all.
