Wow. Although I think Steve Martin is one of the all time smartest and funniest comedians, this sketch could not be done on television today. Laughing at this would be a little awkward.
Too freaking funny! If he did that skit today with the explosives, the PC whiners would be in a frenzy!!!! I was twenty in 1978 and people laughed a lot more than now. Everyone knew it was just a comedy and had a hood time. I miss those days :-(
I will never forget the night that this happened.. It was one of the funniest bits I have ever seen and I am so glad to be able to see it again.. Thank you whoever posted this stuff.... Steve is and always has been THE MASTER.... WOW...
Listen to how the audience goes nuts while Ed announces the opening guest list and through the host intro. I can't tell whether it starts as soon as he mentions Mr Martin or when he says "Burt Reynolds," but that rarely happened during the first two decades of the Carson era except for the 17th anniversary show in 1979.
People...things change. Steve Martin is and will always be the greatest. That joke would have been fine up until Sept.10th of 2001. Parts of Texas still use the "N" word in public. Go figure.
good thing he did it 3 decades ago then. carson openly smoked on the tonight show back in the day. comedy was different then, life was different then.
besides if steve martin who will host SNL once again this saturday night straps C4 to his chest I personally will laugh my fucking ass off in spite of you!
In spite of me? What are you talking about? I think it's fucking hilarious. I'm saying it's sad that people are so paranoid these days that they wouldn't let someone do a skit like that anymore.
The problem with this today has nothing to do with Bush. It has everything to do with lawyers. Some fool would sue NBC claiming they or snot-nosed kids were frightened.
If we had a loser-pays law on the books, that crap wouldn't happen. Lawyers don't want it though. It'll put the slime portion of them out of work.

No... the stereotype-fulfilling American is indeed cowardly. Granted, they're no longer in the majority, but they DO exist, and any American who says otherwise is simply ignorant. No, I'm not saying all of us are cowards, but the sad truth is, many of us ARE.
How in the everlasting hell do you turn a clip of Steve Martin fucking around into sociopolitical allegory? What are you? Fifteen? Your good conduct medal just arrived from the Planet Dumbass.
What needs explaining? You don't know what the Tonight Show is? You don't know who Steve Martin is? You don't know what television is? What do you mean?

Can anyone explain why someone needed an explanation. I guess Steve Martin didn't get this approved by Rumsfeld in the 70s, although Rumsfeld hadn't come out with the most important speech of the 2000's yet (i.e. "All Americans must watch what they say...").
OMG this would NEVER fly today but it's hilarious!!!!!! ROFL!!!!!

A genius out of the gate. This clip is over 30 years old, and it still exudes genius. Who needs to kill an audience? Hold 'em hostage!
