The land mass between China-India (now Indo-China) was called Suvannabhumi (The Golden Chersonese) in the 9th Century A.D. At that time there were already many tribes in this region, the biggest being Barmar, Mons, Siam, Khmer. The south islands (now Indonesia) was controlled by the SriVijaya empire from TamilNadu. In the 10th Century AD an offshoot of SriVijaya empire, the Cholas conquered Temasek (now Singapore) and from there slowly sent people from SriVijaya empire to settle northwards.
In early 14th Century to early 15th Century, The Majapahit Empire began to wrest control of Sumatra, Java and other islands from SriVijaya Empire. Parameswara, a SriVijayan tribe leader (from Melayu province) moved to Temasek in the late 14th Century to escape from the Majapahit warriors. In the 13th Century, the Kingdom of Siam, who ruled these provinces (now Malaysia) made these provinces as vassal states with their own autonomous leaders such as Parameswara and his successors.
Slowly with British help, Parameswara expanded his influence northwards into Melaka and made it his capital. It was Parameswara who permanently wrest control of this region from the Siamese andnamed it Melayu. With the Arabs coming to Melaka to trade, the influence of Muslim religon became stronger. Later successors to Parameswara managed only to annex the provinces up to the northern borders of Perlis, Kedah, Kelanatan and Trengganu with Siam.
The Siamese were generous enough to give them independence to the greedy Parameswara empire. The Parameswara empire were not satisfied and send people into regions such as Yala and Pattani to settle there. Their numbers grew and later wanted to declare independence from Siam. Many wars were fought, but Siam stood their ground; enough was enough. The 'infiltrators' in South Thailand are now fighting an insurgent warfare.
