I agree with you that every citizen should have a right to defend their life with a gun, if necessary. That`s what the 2nd amendment is about. How is see the gun control and its enforcement is to:
1) Prevent the wrong people from getting their hands on gun (or getting the guns out of their hands if they got it).
2) Preventing people from getting semi or fully automatic assault weapons. I think this should be the main purpose of the gun control.
BTW, in most European countries, there is a fairly tough gun control law in place and look at their violent crime rates (much lower). BTW, it does not mean you cannot get gun, it only means it is NOT easy to get a gun.

As far as I know, there's only the "assault rifle."
1. Must be select fire and must at least include burst fire mode (minimum of two shots per single trigger pull)
2. Must use a detachable magazine
3. Must fire an intermediate cartridge (sized between a rifle cartridge and a pistol cartridge)
If a rifle is semi-auto only, meaning only one bullet fired per trigger pull, it is technically NOT an assault rifle, even if it's been patterned after one.

He has handled my weapon (empty, and under close supervision).Doing this it takes away the mystery surrounding it. This doesn't show the failure of gun control, it's the failure of moderation. Gun control needs to be all or nothing. You either need to make them all illegal so that being caught with one is a crime which will bring the misuse of guns down or let everyone have every gun that can be used for civil reasons (I'd probably draw the line at rpg's and howitzers) because if everyone is armed violence will happen less but it is worse when it happens. The problem is moderation.

The government needs to bring back the Civilian Marksmanship Program, if they did, we'd be a lot better off, and there will be less civilians that are scared shitless of firearms.

In switzerland people in the military are aloud to keep their military grade weapons in their home ( aka fully automatic rifles) and after they get out of the service they are aloud to keep their weapons... Switzerland has the lowest crime rate of any country... because literally everyone is armed.
