i think that 1995-1996 was the first change for Mariah to an R&B sound but 97's butterfly saw her changing her style and music to hip-hop. Her albums from 1990-1997 were good besides a few weak ones (Music box and Emotions) but she came back with the Emancipation of mImi and she's been good since then. Vocally she was better 1990-1997; 90-91 was good; 91-92 was a strong point for her whistles and low notes; 93-94 saw her improving her whole voice esp. her belts; 95-97 was her peak in belts.

Idk why people think mariah overworked her voice...Thats a part of being a singer!! Making albums and promotions and stress is a part of all that. BTW Mariah never toured alot, she only did like 5 to 6 shows a tour.. The problem is that mariah has nodules which really affect the voice and if removed can cause permanent damage and could even result in losing your voice..Look Up Julie Andrews. If over singing is the case Opera singers would have no voice by now! they sing in high notes for years!

@Mcvideos92 I have to somewhat disagree. Female singers in Opera generally DO NOT take their chest/mixed voice up past the third octave from what I've heard. You will find a predominant head voice which is much more natural for the female voice. Her songs are heavily demanding of a belt and her low notes descend far below even tenor range. The damage with any technique would have happened IMO.

In the studio Mariah still sounds really amazing (and I'm saying this despite all the studio tricks that are used today to help vocal recordings) but when it comes to live performances Mariah sounded so much stronger and technically impecable before 1997. Her voice really began sounding diferent with the "Daydream" album where all the "breathy" vocals emerged. But why she sounded "horse" 1997 onwards it still goes beyond my understanding. I still like her regardless the quality of her vocals.

both era's are great in their own respect. i would have added butterfly to the first era..her voice was still the same in some ways. 1997-2005 were still very strong and have a lot of her best live performances...it's the 2 newest albums that aren't the absolute strongest but i still LOVE both those albums. mimi is amazing and i love all of the steps her voice has taken.

This si awell nice video, just great to listen to how amazing she was, and phenominal she is. Especially in the lower register, how resonant and agile she became as she grew. Also her head voice and whistles, it shows how much she learnt about her voice, and she controls it better as time passes, and you can hear the different tones she can create in those registers.

Its true live, her upper chest has lost its consistance and ease, but in the studio, where is most comftable, it shines imo
