The LHC is in Geneva, Switzerland (it actually crosses the border of France at 4 points), has been completely constructed, and operated for 23 days at the end of last year. It will begin operation again this Friday

The first full circle of the beam is planned for first week of september and the first collisions in the first or second week of October. So nothing new physics wise can happen before then. And even then you can be relaxed as the 2008 run will only be at partial energy and low luminosity. Basically the real LHC running starts in ca March 2009, this year is mostly engineering tests and calibrations.
C'mon guys ... relax a bit. The site only counted down to midnight Geneva time of 8th of March. 8th of March was planned as the first injection test (e.g. the beam is injected in one direction to the ring, it passes 1/4 of the ring and then is dumped). There will be no collisions today.
The protons won't collide straight away. The first beam circulation will be attempted in September, but I think they've already activated the LHC itself, as turning it on is quite a long process.

LHC grid is connected to the internet. It's a side effect of a project with so many collaborators.

its going down lower than liquid nitrogen levels.
its going to literally a few 10th's of a degree higher than absolute zero, which is -279.9degrees.
but its impossible for us to create something ascold as this, so the closest we are getting is around about 278.8-279.4 degrees centigrade
i think they are using liquid helium pockets or something, not quite sure.

Black holes have a strange nature,, they run out of energy quickly so unless they can gain a massive quantity as soon as it is made if it is then were fine,, as scientists have said,, its just as likely that mythical dragons come out of the black whole,, i mean the chances r minimal of even makin a black whole let alone making one which can devour the earth before it vanishes or is sent to space is a miniscule percentage,, i know people are scared but you really shouldnt be

P.S. A lot of "dudes" on the internet knew that "weapons of mass destruction" was just a lie, a ploy for going into Iraq when there were no such things and we were right then. In 1987 I watched a documentary called "Can PolarBears Tread Water" re: melting ice caps and bulk of scientists then said it was scare mongering and not based in real science. Now Polar bears are drowning as caps melt. If u r that sure of your position, write down now that you will pay me £100,000 if anything goes wrong.

I'm sure the scientists in charge of the Space shuttle had taken every conceivable caution when it exploded in mid air - the difference with that was at worst, only the crew and maybe a few unfortunates on the ground could be killed. With this, there is a definite unknown quantity and the LHC scientists themselves have said "they have NO IDEA what the outcome will be". Very reasuring. I point u to go and look at the reasons some very eminent scientists have said there is a very plausible risk.

That is such a nice theory! I like it. My theory sounds stupid. I think that this has happened before, that is how our Universe was created. Quantum Physicists probably did this experiment before, and our universe is trapped in the LHC of their time. At CERN, they are doing the same thing (creating the bigbang), perhaps we are the experiment (sounds so phlosophical sorry) lol. Well that's what I thought, but I'm just a lump of clay that will peobably be molded into believing other theories :p.

The first full circle of the beam is planned for first week of september and the first collisions in the first or second week of October. So nothing new physics wise can happen before then. And even then you can be relaxed as the 2008 run will only be at partial energy and low luminosity. Basically the real LHC running starts in ca March 2009, this year is mostly engineering tests and calibrations.

C'mon guys ... relax a bit. The site only counted down to midnight Geneva time of 8th of March. 8th of March was planned as the first injection test (e.g. the beam is injected in one direction to the ring, it passes 1/4 of the ring and then is dumped). There will be no collisions today.

The protons won't collide straight away. The first beam circulation will be attempted in September, but I think they've already activated the LHC itself, as turning it on is quite a long process.
