Unlike you, I HAVE been bitten by a bat. I had to rescue it from a big, scary, screaming woman after it flew into her bedroom. I managed to get it to land on me, then cradled it gently and carried it outside. I think it was just a baby, and did not even pierce my skin (though it certainly tried). It made a lot of noise too, right up until I got outside and opened my hands, whereupon it seemed to wait for a few moments as though uncertain it was being freed.
If YouTube has done nothing else, at least it's introducing people to these beautiful, affectionate little animals. Bats have a bad reputation that they don't deserve. They're wonderful!
@SherwStudiostv wow you are stupid, you see a magnificent creature and the only thing you can comment on are the guys fingernails, which arent that bad, infact they look interesting.

what kind of bat is this ,saved one that looks like this but only a third its size because its so young. i am feeding it with a syringe and goats milk. he seems to like it just fine.
@SherwStudiostv That may be, but I didn't record this to "show off" my hands/nails, and you have a very shallow mind if that's the only comment you can make after watching the bat. :(
@mozimomma Takes all kinds, doesn't it?! Thanks for caring for these wonderful beings. We need more people like you who are more concerned with their fellow creatures and less concerned with whether you've gotten a manicure!! God Bless!
Is this bat biting on your hand..not in a hurtful way..just noticed how this little bat looks to be nibbling..maybe licking your hand. These creatures are soo adorable!!!
@cynshy No, no nibbling....she might have been sniffing, I think, or even licking....I can see how you'd imagine that from the video, but I honestly don't remember. I do know I've never been bitten by any bat I've handled, and even when weaned, these two were particularly careful not to mistake or misjudge when taking live food from my fingers.
Ah, kind of like my rats. Even excited and riled up for food, they instantly stop closing their mouth if they feel human finger and pick their way around it or lick your hand and pull at your fingers with their hands if you close your hand. they never bite people, just painlessly nip at strangers who put their fingers through the cage in an attempt to see who it is. Open the cage and they are perfectly fine.
@mozimomma It must be so amazing to be so close to such an amazing animal. I've never quite seen bats as adorable or friendly. I must thank you for opening my eyes. :)
Oh, now THAT'S interesting1 I've been wondering why their wings looked like sticks when they were resting, how they were folded up. Now I can see it pretty clearly. Thanks!
@MrDar3k I guess about the same as a mouse of equivalent size would do - ie. not a whole lot. I suppose it could bite you, but bats are specialized insect-eaters so most of the species don't really have very large teeth, but lots of small sharp ones. The best it could do would be a small scratch. Like a mouse though it would run away if it could. The only way you would get bit is if you capured one and held it in your hand while it panicked perhaps. Wild bats can have abies tho, like most mamals
What are you going to do when they start flying? I'm just curious, because you can't have baby bats or bats in general flying around your home. Will you set them free?
Interesting how nature turned their front paws into wings. Makes me wonder what it would be like to have a huge webbed hand like that. How flexible are their knuckles? Like if they needed to curl their fingers up, could they?
@2ndOfficerCHL Not sure what you mean, but if you mean like we can make a fist with our hand, I'd say no not quite. The wings are quite flexible, but you can see where the bones and joints are in the video, and they will only flex at those joints to a certain extent.
I think that they are called Mexican Free Tail Bats. I live in Florida beside a lake. In the evening I see bats flying acrobatically over the lake eating mosquitoes. I read that they are losing places to make their homes due to development, etc. I put the house, that I had purchased online, on a metal pole about 10 feet above the ground. The house was in full sun beside the lake and I thought perhaps it was too hot inside.
@browndogsarebetter Apparently with commercially built bathouses it often takes more than one season for the bat to (possibly) accommodate them. Keep trying...maybe change the direction it faces, or the height of the pole....
Thanks for caring for the bats. I am a vet tech and I love bats. It is sad that they are so misunderstood. They are truly interesting and wonderful creatures.
I love watching your video footage of the young bats! Are you a rehabber? If so, how do you go about releasing them back to the wild? I was curious how they go about joining a colony that they weren't born into.
@mspontiac Any I've had are from the colony in my own barn. Once they are weaned they are put in an outdoor netted flight cage on the property to learn to fly and catch insects. When they are doing well at that they are released. Thanks for your interest! :)
@browndogsarebetter I can maybe find you some answers, but need to know (if you know) what kind of bats you're hoping to attract, and how, where, and how high the house was installed...?
I have some Questions. I found a youngster last night in the Chimney and I have been successful in feeding him water and I bought some crickets this morning. I am afraid to pick in up as I don't know if he could be a carrier or not. Any Idea's on what more I should feed him? I need to see if his wings are ok and clean the ash of off him. I and going to try to release him this weekend when the weather warms up.

@ladyMcGinley Good not to touch him at all with bare hands; use gloves, or better yet, .can you locate a bat rehabber in your area to turn him over to? Insectivorous bats will usually eat mealworms, and most prefer them over crickets.
@kurtattard She was given a milk replacement formula, then that was upgraded to a blended formula of mealworms and 'milk', and she was weaned onto whole mealworms.
Thanks for posting that. It's the longest bat video I've found so far. Soo cute. I would like to know something - was the little bat nibbling on you or sniffing you?

Lol, this struck me as sooo funny....it's exactly right...what do I do now??? Heheh, but they do eventually catch on and learn how to use them properly.;)
