Had it not been for her being drunk, she wouldn't have sung it like that. It is truly sad to listen to her singing and not getting one single word, but she gave heart and soul..
i don't care if she was drunk, the feeling is strong enough to get to my heart, it's beautiful. you think of her history...this is beautiful song to symbolise the end of a beautiful life <3
can't stop listening to this song. just so fucking heartbreaking. every word feels like a hook in my heart, dragging me along. rip amy, gone too soon.
A fabulous performance..Some people here criticize her for singing with poor articulation. You should well recognize, she was a genius. She has made that alteration to maximize the soul effect of her singing.
We all know, unlike her daily speech, she was always singing with perfect clearness in pronounciation.
@Metspart lol your maturity level is laughable. just cause she's dead doesn't mean she didn't make mistakes. her entourage has admitted that she was drunk and high during these recordings, hence the slurring.
@joeshmoe005 Not true. There are only two songs where her sobriety is questioned on the entire album. If you think Our Day Will Come or Body and Soul etc are drunk, i honestly question your age. Your maturity level is far more laughable than mine because you obviously didn't take the energy to simply look up simple information, not to mention you bought into all of the tabloids, which make millions on the maturity level of people such as yourself.
@Metspart lol why are you so angry over a simple comment? i think you're the one whose age and intelligence should be questioned. you're insulting me for reading the news, yet you're the one whose supporting your argument with something you read from a tabloid. i've been a huge fan of amys since her first album frank, but i'm not one of those people who, after her death, makes her work out to be perfect. she was an addict and unfortunately that shows in her final work.
@joeshmoe005 I didnt get my information from tabloids, hon. Nobody is saying perfection. This is not her "final work". This is perhaps her final compilation that others made for her, sure. Her final work is locked away by Universal records. And yes, she was an addict that did drugs until 08, but most of the album was recorded before her drug use. Only three songs were recorded after, one of which was last year and sounds beautiful. A Song for you was recorded in 09, after the end of her use
@Metspart hmm you realize what you said makes no sense right? yes, i'm perfectly aware she gave up drugs but she was an alcoholic hun. aren't you aware that she died of an alcohol overdose? and no unfortunately this is her final work. why would universal not release her final work in memory of her or to make money? you're a such a silly girl but one thing that i agree with you on is that amy was a wonderful singer but these drunken tracks are not her best work.
@Metspart and if you didn't get this info from a tabloid then where'd you read it then hun? did you just make it up? i hate when people who only started listening to her after her death are all of a sudden amy experts and defenders. maybe you should of been this supportive when she was still alive...
@joeshmoe005 I was a fan long before her death, hon. And I get my information from a forum, where, perhaps people get their information from tabloids, who knows. But just because you heard her once in 2003 does not make you a fan.
I truly LOVE Ms Amy's version of this song. Troubles Souls....... Appreciate the "GREATNESS" while WE are Blessed to have them.... It's better to have had "them", than to have never had them at all...... R.I.P. Donny Hathaway and Amy Winehouse
@rachel4241995 She says and I quote "Know what? Donny Hathaway, know what I think Donny Hathaway is like my Carleen Anderson. Like Marvin Gaye's like great, but Donny Hathaway like he couldn't contain himself. He had something in him you know." I think sadly that is why she identified with him so much.
@rachel4241995 "Know what? Donny Hathaway, know what? I think Donny Hathaway is like my Carleen Anderson. Like Marvin Gaye's like great, but Donny Hathaway like he couldn't contain himself. He had something in him you know."
You've taught me precious secrets of the truth withholding nothing. you came out in front, when i was hiding. now im so much better... i love this song. And I want to merry to this song forever
Why does anyone need to understand the lyrics she is singing? If you do, you will not be able to feel the deep emotions, sorrow, pain and frustration she wants to convey.
You can have access to the lyrics here on YT. Forget about the words and plainly concentrate on her singing. What she says, does not have any significance at all. Her singing is pure soul..It's as if she is drilling a big hole inside you.
What else would you like to have except that sensuousness?
@OTBASAR I do agree that Amy's voice was legendary, one of a kind, inspiring, and drenched in soul but what you are saying about lyrics is obsene. When listening to one of Amy's songs it is quite important to enjoy the whole thing, lyrics and the voice that is singing them. Amy put so much emotion, time, and soul in to her lyrics and to ignore them is plain disprespect in its foulest form. The lyrics in this song were the reason Amy was crying through out the song...
@MrFaggotnumber2 If her articulation is not clear and listener wants to get full text, it exists at many places. Knowing what she sings as lyrics and understanding the text through her singing are completely different things. I suggest, get the text details from elsewhere and concentrate only on her singing, because by focusing on understanding the lyrics, you may lose the emotionary effect of the song on soul.
....So baby won't you please see through me Cause we were alone now And I was singing this song to you CHORUS: You taught me precious secrets Of a true love with holding nothing You came out in front when I was hiding Now I'm so much better And if my words don't come together Listen to the melody 'Cuz my love is in there hiding
There go the Lyrics , been listenning very carefully To Amy's version to take notes of where she made some changes:
I've been so many places In my life and time I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhymes I've acted out my life in stages With 10, 000 people watching
But we're alone now And I'm singing this song to you
I know your image of me Is what I hoped to be I treated you unkindly But darling, can't you see? There's no one more important to me
@jonnypack31 severo tonto que genial seria siuno nace sabiendolo todo! no disimulan la estupidez en lo que se fija entonces el re inteligente en los comentarios de un simple video! no tiene cosas mas importantes que hacer, puro tonto!
Sorry, a number of people surpass Amy Winehouse and this pales in comparison to Donny Hathaway's version. It was a good version, but I didn't get involved emotionally until midway through the song. Donny's version grabs you by the heart in the beginning and moves you throughout.
@winsome1235 Damn, when you will understand that Amy's version is the Greatest Tribute to her beloved Mr. Hathaway? I wonder how can you not feel her great emotion, her deep melancholy, sadness and sorrow. Pure and raw feelings. How can you not realizing it? You must have an icy heart for not to feel the great emotion that shines through in this version.
She was real and her absence from this world just gets sadder. Our greatest British soul/jazz singer ever. I wish she could have made it through her sad/bad times and come back to give us even greater music. Her voice is the best I have ever heard.
@alisharo58 She says and I quote "Know what? Donny Hathaway, know what I think Donny Hathaway is like my Colin Anderson. Like Marvin Gaye's like great, but Donny Hathaway like he couldn't contain himself. He had something in him you know." I think sadly that is why she identified with him so much.
@akanawha thank you so much for quoting the end, it was bugging me a lot! if that's why she admired him so much, then yes, that would be really sad for her to have known she had something special in her then wasted it. :'( I just hope she's happy, wherever she is now. didn't seem much happy here on earth.
@alisharo58 I was looking at a version of this with the lyrics posted, and I guess it should be Carleen Anderson not Colin Anderson. Colin Anderson is a British footballer and Carleen Anderson is a soul singer. Sorry about that.
A good rendition of this song but ..nobody..and I mean nobody can ever surpass the late and great Ray Charles' Version of this song.. All the soul , pain and anguish ..the melancholy..anyway they are all great..also check out the Carpenter's version or Leon Russel's original too..
Can't understand any of the words? Don't know if this was intentional, or just a very bad recording? The song had great potential but falls short of what it could be.
@245Hudson she was crying in the middle of the recording, OMG you dont know notching about music.. she was pure love LOVE HER, and if u are deaf, its not our problem
@matintodriguez After Back to Black, she really did not appear to produce anything new. The last CD is mostly old stuff - too bad she self-destructed so quickly in her career.
@245Hudson I have a hard time understanding it too. apparently she was really emotional singing it. they didn't want to clean it up to show how much the original artist (Hathaway) meant to Amy. even though you cant understated the words, you can still hear the emotion/pain. its amazing.
@245Hudson The reason you cant really understand the words to this song is because she came into the studio one day and was having a rough day so she stopped recording what she was originally doing and told her producer shes wanted to stop and record this once..it wasn't even planned out, she just sang without even using her voice, she was just marking it out, and she only sang it once...and on top of all that..she was crying while she singing this...it was a spur of the moment recording
A singing performance beyond any imagination..A fabulliance!! makes listener reach peak of emotional climax full with a torturous joy. Nobody should dare to compare her with anyone deceased or alive..There is light year distance to the nearest you want to name. Whoever that is, makes no difference at all.
I hear a lot of different artist covering this song. Every fan has a favorite. But, for me I love the song more than the artist, because no artist comes before the song. Especially a song as beautiful as this.
YOU DONT LISTEN TO HER VOICE. YOU LISTEN TO HER HEARTM SOUL AND SADNESS. SUCH A BEATIFUL SONG, UNIQUE..AMY PLAYES THIS SONG ORIGINALLY HER AND THE GUITAR AND SHE STARTED CRYING ACCORDING TO SALLAM REMI, I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR THAT VERSION. JUST BEATIFUL
I can read a million comments against her version of this song and it won't change my opinion of it at all. She was a remarkable artist, and this is so real. You don't get to hear that very often. Sure her voice has sounded more clear and legible on most of her other recordings, but this is so heart wrenching and beautiful still. It is useless to compare it to Aguilera or anyone else. She always did songs her way.
I love Amy but this should never have found its way onto the album. She butchers the song, sounds like she's hammered. I doubt she ever wanted this to see the light of day. It doesn't do her voice or this song any justice.
Amy has a very unique voice and I really appreciate the passion behind it when she sings it. But about 1/4 of the time I can barely make out some of the words she's singing and I personally like to hear it. Its definitely a very different version from Christina Aguilera.
I love Amy Winehouse. God rest her soul.....but her version of this song is not that great. Most of it is rather intelligible. Again I love Amys voice but this is terrible and comparing this to Donny Hathaways version is blasphemy.#seriously
@firstladyssdaughter I love it for its rough quality. She was pretty high and emotional when she sang it. She was feeling every word she sang, and I can't see how you could say what you did about it if you love Amy. I feel her pain and wish I could help her when I hear it. I am glad that they shared a private moment with the fans. Unforgettable.
@akanawha i agree.. i actually read that the producer purposely put this track on the album to show people how sad she was in her life at the time. To show people how much help she needed. Favourite song on the album for sure. She also did it in one take and then cried on on the producers lap after(is what he said in the interview).
This version isn't just "good", it's awesome. I wonder how can you not be able to feel a deep melancholy, sadness and a great pain that conveys this version. Real and raw feelings, pure enchantment. You must be really obtuse to not realize it.
If you like it or not is subjective, but deny the greatness of Amy's version, trying to diminish it, is just stupid.
@ILoveAmyJWinehouse I appreciate comments like yours posted for Amy. You do a great job. This is the best version with ultimate soul, I have ever listened to.
@ILoveAmyJWinehouse The enormous difference between her singing versus others is something similar to quality comparison, high resolution - high contrast picture versus low resolution - low contrast, respectively. Hope it is clear for everyone..
I'm sick of these conceited comparisons written by people, probably haters, who are too busy to make prigs judgments, rather than recognize and appreciate the beauty of Amy's version, in my opinion, the greatest tribute to Donny Hathaway.
@LukeeAG Nobody is idiot as you think. You are also under 25, that's why. All who are above 40 till 70 think she is the best..that is experience..sorry...
Oh please have a seat! I LOVE Amy Winehouse but you cant compare her version to whitney ,donny or aretha are you high?! you guys must be under 30 who think this. you dont know any better. so its ok!
@SantanaGonsalves Damn, but now what does it matter the age??? Oh please, you wrote bullshit. On you tube are available all versions of all the singers who have sung this song. If you don't like Amy's version, bad for you, but you don't seek stupid excuses just to diminish it.
@Rena1934 You are 25, that's why. Carpenter can not rise emotions. This is NOT a song tob sung in a joyous manner. Singing with soul and singing beautiful are totally different. All who are above 40 till 70 think she is the best..sorry...
I've listened to many versions of this song, and I have to say that this is the most heart-wrenching rendition I've ever heard. It's got all of her soul in this song, and that's why I have to say that this, for me, is the best version of this song...even over Donny's.
Let's not make a soul competition. Nobody should even dare..all others will lose. Each time I listen to this song I'm full with tears.
She was not my wife, sister, daughter or even lover, before I was introduced to her music, but managed to invade my soul using sound waves only, through delicate variations in frequency. That could only have existence in dreams as a fantasy.
Do not call her a talent please. Talents are everywhere. It will degrade her indescribably superfluous merits.
It is a matter of opinion who sings it the best, but noone would have been able to sing it if Leon Russell hadn't written it. I just have this thing for Amy's voice. My favorite song by Donny Hathaway is one of his duets with Roberta Flack "Where Is The Love". It is one of those songs I never get tired of.
Intensity and pain in Amy's voice is a something incredible and unique. I can feel her pain and her emotions. No other singer who sang this song has never been able to touch my soul as did Amy. In my opinion, Amy is the only one that has managed to overcome all the versions of other singers who have sung this song.
ah i see a lot people say that her version is better then his..I would have to disagree she wouldn't have this song to sing or his other if it wasn't for his mind and soul going threw what he did to write it. she gained the inspiration to sing how she did from his words. I give her props for singing it as if any other artist that tries..but I'm not going to give her the credit for making the song for what it is.
@yujichan The song is open to interpretation. Nobody said that Amy made the song what it is - it's a beautifully written song and it's timeless which is what makes it so great. Amy did an incredibly tragic and heartfelt rendition, where you can hear the heartbreak dripping off every word. She does a different but equally great version.
Anyway, just because someone sang it first doesn't mean they sang it better. Otis Redding wrote and sang Respect before Aretha Franklin, but it's 100% her song.
She was so beautiful. What a voice and what an amazing capacity of transmiting us what she feels, what she felt then, how she felt and how she probably didnt enjoy feeling. Voice of a princess' broken heart
Only you could get close to the great Donny!!!wath a talented girl!!

@matintodriguez After Back to Black, she really did not appear to produce anything new. The last CD is mostly old stuff - too bad she self-destructed so quickly in her career.
245Hudson 2 weeks ago
@245Hudson I have a hard time understanding it too. apparently she was really emotional singing it. they didn't want to clean it up to show how much the original artist (Hathaway) meant to Amy. even though you cant understated the words, you can still hear the emotion/pain. its amazing.
alisharo58 2 weeks ago

Again I love Amys voice but this is terrible and comparing this to Donny Hathaways version is blasphemy.#seriously
firstladyssdaughter 1 month ago
@firstladyssdaughter I love it for its rough quality. She was pretty high and emotional when she sang it. She was feeling every word she sang, and I can't see how you could say what you did about it if you love Amy. I feel her pain and wish I could help her when I hear it. I am glad that they shared a private moment with the fans. Unforgettable.
akanawha 1 month ago 3

@ILoveAmyJWinehouse Are there still people here negotiating over the greatness of Amy? Anything can be negotiated, but NOT Amy. We know she was REAL.
OTBASAR 3 weeks ago 2
@ILoveAmyJWinehouse The enormous difference between her singing versus others is something similar to quality comparison, high resolution - high contrast picture versus low resolution - low contrast, respectively. Hope it is clear for everyone..

I'm sick of these conceited comparisons written by people, probably haters, who are too busy to make prigs judgments, rather than recognize and appreciate the beauty of Amy's version, in my opinion, the greatest tribute to Donny Hathaway.

It is one of those songs I never get tired of.
akanawha 1 month ago 3
Intensity and pain in Amy's voice is a something incredible and unique. I can feel her pain and her emotions. No other singer who sang this song has never been able to touch my soul as did Amy. In my opinion, Amy is the only one that has managed to overcome all the versions of other singers who have sung this song.

ah i see a lot people say that her version is better then his..I would have to disagree she wouldn't have this song to sing or his other if it wasn't for his mind and soul going threw what he did to write it. she gained the inspiration to sing how she did from his words. I give her props for singing it as if any other artist that tries..but I'm not going to give her the credit for making the song for what it is.
yujichan 1 month ago
@yujichan The song is open to interpretation. Nobody said that Amy made the song what it is - it's a beautifully written song and it's timeless which is what makes it so great. Amy did an incredibly tragic and heartfelt rendition, where you can hear the heartbreak dripping off every word. She does a different but equally great version.
Anyway, just because someone sang it first doesn't mean they sang it better. Otis Redding wrote and sang Respect before Aretha Franklin, but it's 100% her song.
