@MrScoodles LOL. and look at tony's face. smilin like a kid in a sandbox. he loved playing with wayne. coleman not as much. you can hear it in his playing!!
In order to appreciate jazz you have to be able to understand what's happening during the whole song, most people nowadays don't have the attention span to listen for more than 5 minutes and get bored, which is why jazz is so unpopular because people have the attention span of a ringworm. This video was meant for people who enjoy jazz, not you naysaying pricks.
You're kidding, right? Nonstructural? Have you really heard it? Experimental, yes; but absolutely with structure. Are you familiar with the tune they're playing? It's one of the most known jazz standards and songs for that matter. This is unmistakable when you hear Miles play the melody )with some improvisational variation) and the solos sticking to the form, no matter how far out it may get.
I'm glad I'm in company with at least three other people. Just as some people just don't 'get' say classical music I don't 'get' this at all and find Kind of Blue unlistenable. No structure, no melody, just a lot of random notes. Not criticising those who like it obviously, I guess I must have a kind of blind spot for non-structured jazz.
In 'Kind of Blue', Miles got away from the song- and harmony-based Jazz. He used scales that differ a lot from our conventional scales, and used lydic, doric etc. scales ("modes") and simply told the others to improvise basing on these. So there's no basic harmonic pattern (like still with 'Autumn Leaves').
At first, I found "Kind of Blue" just strangely fascinating but loved it the more I listened to it.
Give it a chance, too, it's worth it! Best regards.
@thesubtleface I don't mean to sound rude or elitist, but if you can't hear the melody and structure in a song like 'So What' or 'Blue In Green' from 'Kind Of Blue', then the problem is with you not the music.
@thedobbothy I didn't say "Miles, you're shit." Notice that three little word infront of shit. That's a compliment. Miles Davis is my idol. I play trumpet and could only dream to play like him.
@ hommefriday - Who the fuck cares about what YOU felt about Wayne's role in the Miles Davis Quintet!! Just listen to the music and shut the fuck up!!! Wayne Shorter completely changed the sound of Jazz thru his compositions and his phenomenal playing. There hasn't been ANYONE to contribute to the genre at the level he did, since him!! Cannonball Adderley is a different individual with a different style. Learn to love the unique voices of these geniuses without your vapid opinions.
@Gilnar13 - I am chill, dude. Take my advice to heart. People like you sound ignorant to people like me who are actually Jazz musicians and realize that established musicians are NOT to be judged. Only appreciated for their UNIQUENESS!! Get it?
Hey - Miles was a genius..even if I didn't always "get" his music. Hancock made a bad choice... he kind of lost it there but he was24 yrs old and trying to stay with Miles... stuff happens. I saw miles live once where he played a whole set with his back to the audience.
Listen again to the whole number and then give a round of applause to Ron Carter... he stayed with him....what a talent and what great musical communication between him and miles.
we have no other word to describe how it gets into and connects directly with the soul, providing it with "something", so with the little we have to choose from, we call it cool.....

What the hell did Herbie do at the end (13.50) to warrant such abuse from Miles?! He shouts at him then smashes his hands down the piano, making Herbie look about 5 inches tall...
@BlueinGreen2 Looks to me like Herbie was trying to go in to the next tune, which started with the piano softly. Miles, realizing that the crowd was going into an ovation, was either upset because Herbie was lackadaisical starting the next tune (and thus allowing the crowd to swell) or just venting angst that the crowd was interrupting his flow.
@BlueinGreen2 I'm pretty positive its because miles ends it with that little upward lick and then like 2 seconds later herbie mimics it after the tune is over. Miles was pissed that herbie didn't just let it sit.
