On the contrary, I unfortunately think the reputation is very much deserved. Considering when it was finally released there were a lot better games out at that time - Unreal Tournament and Quake III Arena to name two. The game ran on the archaic Quake II engine and forcing rthe player to have a limited number of saves was a highly unpopular move.
Add to that very flawed monster AI that is poorly balanced by some really over-powered attacks from some of them. Oh, and doors kill you as well.

I didn't really intend for it to be funny, unfortunately it did become a bit silly with the speech synthesizer. hopefully this subject wil be taken more sreiously with the live commentary.
