Because it does things your computer doesn't do, in a format that works really well, using a remote, and brings several devices together. We have 3 macs, 5 ipods, 2 iphones, and an ipad. When we want to watch something, we don't worry about where it is, how to get it there, etc., We just watch it - and Apple TV is part of that.

I think they tried that a while ago, but it didn't work out. I'm not 100% sure of that, though. However, I don't see Apple getting into the gaming market anytime soon, nor do I really want them to.

Movies on demand you can get from your cable TV provider or from Sky (UK) download Democracy Player and then connect your PC to your TV and it you will have all that anyway for free. You can use software for photo storage
