For anyone wondering if this works on DYED black hair: I used this on my dyed black hair & it turned most of it to a medium brown with red undertones & some light brown streaks, but the area near my ends didn't lift too well & are a dark brown. I left it on for 40 minutes & it didn't lift as much as in the video (since it's not natural dark hair) but it still lifted at least 2-3 shades. I'm doing it again today to get it even lighter. It'd say it's worth it, but you might have to do it twice.
@Pippychan i wish you did this before so i couldve tried it, because i use to have black colored hair, and i bleached my hair to get a red/copper/brown color and it didnt work as well as i thought it would. my current picture is the results.
@ExoticCalli That's true of using dye on virgin hair or on grown out roots, but the question was if dye could be used to lighten hair that's been previously colored black. Unless the black was a reliable semi-permanent color, the new dye will not lift the previous color. Color doesn't lift previous color from the cortex.
This hair colour is very flattering on you. I would recommend that anyone doing their roots not do it on their own though. Very difficult to do successfully.

@theopaul8, it says it on the description box below the video. That's the whole point of that, so people won't be asking the same questions over and over again.
i know she was just touching up her roots which is fine, but if its your first time using this dye then you have to start from your ends and do your roots LAST! it says right in the instructions. if you dont follow it then your going to end up with hot roots! trust me, i just learned my lesson. ALWAYS read the instructions! this dye works differently than others

Do hair stylist lie to make more money? cause i went to a salon and asked what it would take to get my natural black hair the color of roses hair and the lady told me i would have to bleach it first (which just that would cost 150.00) then the color... and that since i have such long hair half of it would get fried and they would have to cut alot off due to the damage from bleaching.... if i use the box i know it wont come out the exact color but will it end up in that general area..??
this is a silly question, but i'm going to put it out there anyway :) i used the same l'oreal boxed dye on my hair this weekend, my roots lightened just fine and then my lengths fade into dark brown (my natural color). i'm pretty sure it's because i didn't put enough mixture on the bottom half of my hair. question is, can i use the same stuff to lighten it again?
@aaanderson84 sometimes that happens because either a. you have dyed your hair before, so the top part catches the color better because it is the part that has grown out and has never been dyed before or b. you took your time dying your hair and so the dye stayed on the top half longer than the bottom. I wouldn't suggest re dying your hair yet-wait three weeks at LEAST because dying it now can cause a lot of damage. Also, when you dye it, put more dye on the ends than the roots. good luck!

@Elaine2badd Never bleached my hair. Just used whatever came with the box dye and it lightened my hair very nicely. From dark brown to light brown. But not all hair boxes work this way I noticed only this brand did.

@BondGirlMaria It won't lift your dye. You can use hair colour removers that mix with a low level peroxide or water to lift the artificial colour in your hair. My hair was dyed a dark brown from a bleach blonde and colour remover lifted it to a medium brassy blonde. I bleached it back to a light blonde in stages. If all else fails - bleach lol

@jennibear95 don't dye your eyebrows! use a lighter shade eyebrow pencil to blend the color. DON'T apply dye on them. if you realllly have to, get it done professionally.

@jennibear95 i know this is kinda late but i still hope it helps. never dye your brows ever itll look werid and is very bad for you so dont ever do that just buy a facial hair bleaching kit and bleach your brows slightly the box will most likely tell you to leave it on for 8 mintues but thats too long and youll end up with blonde brows so leave for a mintue to 2 mintues and if its still not light enough try it again for another minute. @jennibear95 I use 'Jolen creme bleach'. It's fairly simple mix the accelerator and the bleach creme together and apply on thickly to the eyebrows. Now usually it takes for more than 10 minutes for my eyebrows to lighten to more of a reddish brown color. But I'd guess it's different for everyone so make sure you make enough and wipe off a little every 5 minutes to see how much is lightened. If you need to wait longer just reapply the mixture.
@akoshitax3 Hiii. ive just qualified as a hairdresser, the way dye works is that it wont lighten your hair, only shades equal or darker than your haircolour will work. you will need to lighten your hair a little with bleach or strip first, then put the dye on :) hope this helps.. x
@akoshitax3 You don't have to bleach it. If you are using a box brand color that is probably your problem. In a salon the hair color they put on you is formulated specifically for your hair and the end result you want. Also are you using a permanent color or semi/demi permanent? That makes a difference as semi/demi only partially penetrate or lay on the cuticle only and generally have no lightening ability. I have a cosmetology license and worked in a salon for 6 years. Hope this helps!

@akoshitax3 Dye it with loreal feria in chai latte or golden sunset depending on how willing you are to look a little weird. Do this twice, taking a weeks break in between. Remember to use a deep condition treatment, mask, or oil before you dye as it will reduce damage. Next take loreal feria witch has the best red ever, perfect 10 for a more natural red, or loreal excellence cream. I have tried this and it works! Just remember to condition!!!!
@akoshitax3 I thing you should go to the hairdresser, because I tried to lighten my hair at home too (I have black hair) and it didn't work, I couldn't get rid of this wierd color : brown at the roots, ginger in the middle and yellow-blonde at the ends. Trust me, hairdressers are girl's best friends (;
i'm a hairstylist and you always seem to have good ideas about keeping your hair healthy, but from experience in the salon, store bought hair color is VERY damaging to the hair. you do not know what is in the product and especially when lifting hair color is very damaging! personally, i would recommend going to a salon and paying for the professional color, rather than damaging your hair!!

@Elaine2badd Never bleached my hair. Just used whatever came with the box dye and it lightened my hair very nicely. From dark brown to light brown. But not all hair boxes work this way I noticed only this brand did.

@akoshitax3 Color doesn't lift color. If you dye your hair, the only way to get to a lighter color than you're currently at is to bleach it and then dye it.

I have died my hair black for over a year now and I wanna go a lighter colour... will this hair dye be able to lighten it? Or will it just lighten it near the roots?

@BondGirlMaria It won't lift your dye. You can use hair colour removers that mix with a low level peroxide or water to lift the artificial colour in your hair. My hair was dyed a dark brown from a bleach blonde and colour remover lifted it to a medium brassy blonde. I bleached it back to a light blonde in stages. If all else fails - bleach lol

@jennibear95 It really depends on if your eyebrows are thick or thin (hair-wise)
for ex: I have alot of hair on my eyebrows even tho I wax them but the black is really obvious so I'd have to dye my eyebrows or color them
My friend has black eyebrows too but she doesn't have that much hair so it looks llighter & not so black so she'd look ok if she did wat u wanted to do

@jennibear95 it'll look fine. My sister has her hair color and black eyebrows and it doesn't look that weird. and also, if you aren't satisfied you can always color your eyebrows later.

@jennibear95 if your eye brows are covered by bangs it wouldnt matter, but i dont think you should ! its might not turn out how you want it too, they wont be to noticable i have black eyebrows and died my hair colour this colour before, nobody noticed till i pointed it out. Dont sweat about it hun.

@jennibear95 don't dye your eyebrows! use a lighter shade eyebrow pencil to blend the color. DON'T apply dye on them. if you realllly have to, get it done professionally.

@jennibear95 I had black hair and my eyebrows are black too. I coloured my hair in Reddish brown with golden highlights and I still have my black eyebrows. It does't look bad at all :) Hope this helps

@jennibear95 i know this is kinda late but i still hope it helps. never dye your brows ever itll look werid and is very bad for you so dont ever do that just buy a facial hair bleaching kit and bleach your brows slightly the box will most likely tell you to leave it on for 8 mintues but thats too long and youll end up with blonde brows so leave for a mintue to 2 mintues and if its still not light enough try it again for another minute. @jennibear95 I use 'Jolen creme bleach'. It's fairly simple mix the accelerator and the bleach creme together and apply on thickly to the eyebrows. Now usually it takes for more than 10 minutes for my eyebrows to lighten to more of a reddish brown color. But I'd guess it's different for everyone so make sure you make enough and wipe off a little every 5 minutes to see how much is lightened. If you need to wait longer just reapply the mixture.

@akoshitax3 Hiii. ive just qualified as a hairdresser, the way dye works is that it wont lighten your hair, only shades equal or darker than your haircolour will work. you will need to lighten your hair a little with bleach or strip first, then put the dye on :) hope this helps.. x

@akoshitax3 You don't have to bleach it. If you are using a box brand color that is probably your problem. In a salon the hair color they put on you is formulated specifically for your hair and the end result you want. Also are you using a permanent color or semi/demi permanent? That makes a difference as semi/demi only partially penetrate or lay on the cuticle only and generally have no lightening ability. I have a cosmetology license and worked in a salon for 6 years. @Estefanny2010 I love MoroccanOil products! I have extremely curly hair and it's the only thing that defines the curl as well as leaves it soft and not crunchy (like gel). Highly recommend it.

@akoshitax3 Dye it with loreal feria in chai latte or golden sunset depending on how willing you are to look a little weird. Do this twice, taking a weeks break in between. Remember to use a deep condition treatment, mask, or oil before you dye as it will reduce damage. Next take loreal feria witch has the best red ever, perfect 10 for a more natural red, or loreal excellence cream. I have tried this and it works! Just remember to condition!!!!

@akoshitax3 I thing you should go to the hairdresser, because I tried to lighten my hair at home too (I have black hair) and it didn't work, I couldn't get rid of this wierd color : brown at the roots, ginger in the middle and yellow-blonde at the ends. Trust me, hairdressers are girl's best friends (;

i'm a hairstylist and you always seem to have good ideas about keeping your hair healthy, but from experience in the salon, store bought hair color is VERY damaging to the hair. you do not know what is in the product and especially when lifting hair color is very damaging! personally, i would recommend going to a salon and paying for the professional color, rather than damaging your hair!!
