For all the doo wop fanatics of the Genies, Bill Gaines, passed away this past February in Quebec province, Canada. William McKinley Gaines, was one of the original "Genies." He was 77. If you're a true fan, you remember that Bill bolted from the Genies and left for Canada with a young canadian woman. This is true life, not the fake Eddie and the Cruisers stuff. Anyway, R.I.P Bill.
@desoto57firesweepBill (Willliam was the grandpop of my children Roxy & Willy;A TRUE standing BLACK man after what everything life stole away from him;his music, his family;his pregnant WIFE migrate too CANADA.Qc1965s.In 1993 he moved in MTL city he should have been since the 1st come...untill his last breath he hold on so hard & encourage me with his grandchildrens he did 20 years of dialysis, blind (the good news1st black man in QC.,CA to have a Mira dog)RIPMr.Gaines Knocknok!
This was a one-hit wonder released in 1958. The Genies broke up the following year in 1960. Listening to this song on a vintage jukebox will blow you away. Sensational sound quality -- good production.
Oh God, my friends and I were in the car headed to Wild Waves listening to a mix CD and when this came on we all looked at each other and began singing obnoxiously.
This song brings back memories of my last year in High School. Washington DC class trip. We sang this song to the teachers as they tried to wake us up in the morning to get us out of our hotel rooms.
I had forgot about this great doo wop and the sax. Heard it on a local oldies station last week and had to just find it on YouTube. Thanks for posting.
The late Claude Johnson (Juan of Don & Juan) was a Genie and his voice is unmistakeable on both "Who's That Knocking" '59 and also on "What's Your Name" '62. Neither Eugene Pitt nor the late Roland Trone (Don of Don & Juan) were true Genies. Eugene was associated and perhaps founded the Genies but never sang with them. Roland never sang with the Genies.
Too bad everytime I hear it I'll be paranoid because it's part of the hole BEN deal... And it's got that "overly happy, perfect for a horror movie" vibe to it.
@LadyAlzers Of course he is, because we all know about him. Spreading the word about him only spreads him more... The more we fight the stronger he gets... How do you fight something that gets stronger the more you think about it?
@JBRewind Ha ha I'm sorry I didn't intend that as an insult. I was just thinking any bad thing that would come about as a result of BEN would be a lot worse than the moon crashing into the Earth.
@LadyAlzers well, some of the lyrics are that someone was calling his name and threw a brick through his window pane, he thinks it might be Mabel and/or Flo and he got himself in a awful fix when he got mixed up with those two chicks. Maybe that will help when you listen again.
I have this record on a 45 (did I read once that Don and Juan [What's Your Name] was also members of the Genies?). I also recall an art movie/sexploitation movie back in the late '60s titled Who's That Knocking On My Door, and the Genies song was featured in the movie. I didn't see the movie, but rather only saw the trailer (preview), and the Genie's song WTKOMD was used (playing) during the trailer.
Anyone want to fast dance, this music was our secret to staying fit, we just danced for hours and hours, this was good for our health and soul..Thanks for the posting.
Me, too. All the kids on American Bandstand could come up with was, 'It's got a good beat.' That probably didn't help its popularity because it never did break into the 'Top 10'. Still, I love the tune, as you do.
One of lesser known rock songs but great to listen to just the same. One of those songs one can listen to and just chill out and think about how music used to be. Thank you for the post. Rock N' Roll lives.
