To do that requires them to spend millions and millions of dollars in research and development. Do you really think OS X is just BSD made "flashy"? The "flashy" part is the 10 years of development of OpenStep and other technologies at Jobs' company NeXT. The BSD part just moves bits around on the disk. And the iPad is successful because it's the first good tablet.

As for the new phones, some are copy cats, but others take the technology and actually improve upon it and make a product if not at par with an iPhone, better than an iPhone.
