I wonder how many atheists Dawkins created in this lecture? His words are conspicuously weighted. Don't get me wrong. I'm all for types of rhetoric if the outcome is truly moral.
Much of what people do is done in the name of God. Irishmen blow each other up in his name. Arabs blow themselves up in his name. Imams and ayatollahs oppress women in his name. Celibate popes and priests mess up people's sex lives in his name. Jewish shohets cut live animals' throats in his name.
Boy tough crowd. Nobody has laughed at any of his jokes for this entire lecture until the cannonball. I remember when my science teacher did the same demonstration, he held the ball up to his face and said, "This could be devastating for a man as handsome as me"
I recommend "The God Delusion", there you have an answer about the origin of the Universe. But I guess you can't read, dickhead.
You don't have anything to offer but insults, no arguments, no truths and only hate to those that actually REASON, beacause REASONING is something you can't do. Yes, you heard about Poland.. heard something anyways. I'm Polish but I don't wash toilets in the houses of Brits (no offence to Brits here). And I study English so fuck off cause I know more about it than u.
I would actually recommend "Unweaving the Rainbow" above "the God Delusion" - rather than attacking religion (which while correct, is likely to do little more than annoy faith heads), that book shows the wonder and science and reason. In the case of a religious, but otherwise thinking person, it could be more likely to make them reconsider their beliefs.
@RajahBrooke lol.The God Delusion doesn't just 'annoy faith heads' but it presents a far more logical, rational and evidential explanation for the birth of the universe and all life on this planet to people who otherwise, may actually think that design is the only alternative to random chance.Which its obviously not. It also highlights the sheer, remorseless brutality in the bible and the negative effects that believing in a faith can do to people psychologically. It also debunks the idea of god.
@Badgerinthenight What are you talking about? I love the God Delusion - it's a great book, and I stand by it to the letter. I would just argue that Unweaving the Rainbow would be a better choice for someone who has a preconcieved notion on Dawkins, or who is already religious and unlikely to react to a book that treats him/her as delusional. There is nothing Dawkins said in the God Delusion that he had not already more elegantly said before then - in terms of science. Stop trolling.
There is no wind resistance their is air resistance and friction. He is making the point that because we know about air resistance and friction that we can put our trust in some areas of science, that is no matter how many times the experiment done under the same conditions it will give the same result. If the weight was in outer space it would carry on moving at the same speed until another force affected it.
wannabeebeeo. You are as thick as shit. Go to a creationist website where you will find people just like yourself. Experience has shown that it is impossible to educate people like you because you have your head up your arse.
@DrMontague Sorry dude but as much as I agree with you, you sounded like you have your head up your arse just as much. What we need to do is not attack back at the ignorant, who have the information right in front of their eyes but refuse to look at it and think for themselves. We need to stay calm and not stoop to their level of insult and rudeness. We need to argue coherently and make our points clear and concisely. If they do not wish to listen or to accept the truth, then move on, that is...
@Badgerinthenight I don't entertain or take shit from people who steadfastly refuse to do any intellectual study or research. I see faith every time I see someone walk into a supermarket. There's no guarentee the auto-matic door will open, but people walk towards it without hesitation because they believe it will open for them based on previous experience.
I wonder if some believers in the supernatural (no matter how much evidence to suggest the contrary) refuse to forsake their beliefs because of the pains of *theistic withdrawals*. Religion is so deeply entrenched in theists (like a overly-complicated web of vines) that the effort to accept something like evolution will require superhuman effort to "wake up".
Science and religion are not two different ways of looking at the same reality; they are two very different ideas of what reality is. True spirituality (souls, angels, demons, gods, etc.) is nonexistant. Certain facilities of the human mind cannot be trusted for observation of reality, and faith is one of them. Again, science is winning all the battles but still losing the war; people are waking up but aren't quite alert yet. We've got a lot of trials ahead of us.
Science has won the battle. We will always have those with psychological defects who have a yearning to believe in a god/gods. But science is now in a stronger position than it has been in the whole history of mankind.
They might believe they will rule but it will not happen. It is merely scare mongering by the media. Sadly Dawkins himself has become part of this scare mongering. Anyone can go out and find religious cranks. Most people don't give a shit, they are more concerned about their jobs and paying mortgages than world domination.
I'm not sure what knowing the things he knows can do to make the world a better place... but I'm sure the people at the top do, and are engineering humanity in certain ways...
This is why Hitler and religious fascists cannot get their way... because in any selection process, there MUST be a selection of DIFFERENT types to choose from.
but what could HUMANITY be being engineered for? Our survival, and adaptation skills seem the most logical explanations....
that is...until you note the fact that we are becoming EVER MORE dependent on technology, and in the future would probably lose the use of some of our limbs!
All of 'civilzation' has been infected by Satan's cunning. Even the amish are decadent. A true Christian must renounce these trinkets, and live off the land wearing bark sheaths to cover their sin, and destroy all of these tainted symbols, starting with the evil 'gateway' in front of you!
You're a creationist crank. You are now blocked. My time is too valuable to argue with feeble minded people. Science has won the argument, creationists have lost it. Take heart atheists look at events in Turkey recently. They wont allow an Islamic government. People all over the world are waking up.
well, I'm religious but Science is just the laws of nature we are discovering. They're God's laws for our world. Of course Science will win and so God will win. You mix two different things together
I don't know how the the universe came into being. Intellectual attempts are being made to discover how it came into being. One day science might find the answer. The difference between you and me is that you think you know where the universe came from because of few ancient scribblings, these were written by people who couldn't possibly have know any different.
No sir. You think that these ''ancient scribblings'' were written by men. But you weren't there to see the writer or to feel the inspiration. You are judging because you ''think you know''. I just simply take the books by their own words - that God inspired them. I don't know how it began. Science will only know the physical, chemical, biological and mathematical aspects of what was there in the beginning. But why it was there in the beginning - you will only find God.
You weren't there either so you too cannot know. As far as I'm concerned your a creationist time waster. I'm not going to waste my intellect on you. you should read the brothers Grimm 'Fairy Tales'? you might find god in them also. You're blocked.
There is a certain part of me that likes to consider myself open to any debate, be it from a theist, deist, agnostic or atheist but, at times, the nonsense gets so tiresome that I find I have to admit that shutting out irrational and/or obtuse theists is both satisfying and fun. While it may it open one up to the accusation of intolerance, I would say being intolerant of the intolerant is hardly a crime.
Satan makes science work because he wants to undermine the faithful. Medicine, mathematics, logic, engineering, fabrication, telecommunications, all are elaborate conceits which district us from the divine.
I find physics to be a truely beautiful science. For me it has such a consistancy and accuracy that is hard to find. Well I can't explain very well why I like it, I just do.
There is a skeptical show called Penn and Tellers Bullshit in america on showtime. You can also find their clips on youtube and google video. trashing religion. Hey dawkins guy.
I believe God exists. I believe in my religion. I believe my belief has given me the strength to compete and sometimes win in the cage.
If you doubt my God and my religion therefore your saying my belief shouldn't exist then get your skinny arse in the cage with me and test it.

You must have come via the ape lineage.
