I know everything on here is old and its practicaly bringing back the dead posting now, but anyway, its actualy illegal in Minnesota to kill any fish, including bowfin, unlike some people think.
It's best to release these dogfish. The are important for keeping the balance in a lake and are the sign of a healthy ecosystem. Also they are the number one predator of young carp.
Plus they fight better than any bass will. Fun fish to catch.
They can live out of water for a while, not sure how long. They have evolved to breath straight air from the surface instead of just from oxygenated water. They have some organ that allows them to do this.
I did catch one once and threw it into a small landscaped pond I have at my place. In the middle of the night I heard a great commotion....thought a coon or some other critter was eating him. In the morning I found him in a half inch of water (a stream from my pond to the lake)....still living....I through the guy in the lake and he swam away.
i caught one of those in a boat marina up at mille lacs when i was a kid , we didnt know what the hell it was at first ....it was twice the size of this one ...
