  • That's real good kid, real good keep on doing what you're doing, also rapt that a young guy is into this stuff,do you do any Fahey or Basho? excellent playing, all the best from down under.

  • Excellent!

  • brilliant rendition

  • Still tring to figure-out that bend you do above the nut, after the harmonic?

  • Like the grin on your face when you picked up the slide to start playing VMG ! Excellent renditions of both Leo songs, great to see young players doing this stuff, 12-string acoustic picking, you can't beat it! Keep it up, good luck.

  • what do you think about Vicente Amigo, one of my favorite flamenco guitarriero ;)

  • it reminds me of Midsummer Day by The Tea Party

  • i'm very envious, but that don't matter, because I really like your work!

    Greetz KK

  • One of my favorite pieces by Leo.....very nicely performed!!!

    Thank you.

Greetz and best Wishes from Ger

    KK

  • Guild 12 strings ... 'hidden' gems of the acoustic world.

  • Dam. That sounds beautiful!

  • i bet if u put this on itunes you'd make like 2 million.

  • Beautiful work!

  • Easter in particular is so well played with so much emotion, KUDOS !!!

  • I have heard Leo play VM faster too... i thought your timing was good. Nice slide work too.

  • i keep coming back to enjoy this performance...

  • Great stuff all around!

  • that's great! i play 12 string 2!

  • Remarkable. The folks at UWM have the most amazing guitar courses EVER, or they somehow accepted only the most profoundly gifted young musicians. Every one of the videos are spectacular, this however may be my favorite. Hopefully your obvious passion for the music will translate into a decent living where we can all enjoy your music for years to come. It would be so depressing if you became an accountant. I'm 57, and have only been playing for a few years. You inspire and frustrate me.

  • Thanks for these kind words. You may be interested in our Leo Kottke summer workshop at the end of July. Message us for details.

  • i'm sure leo kottke would be proud.

  • Hey kid, you need to be very, very grateful for the drive, taste and talent you have been blessed with. I know I am for you, and for us... my Lord you are something special!

  • Awesome job...Vaseline Machine Gun was not too fast...I've seen Leo Live in 1972 and he played it faster than this...very glad to see this music being kept alive by someone so young...you go lil brother...

  • Good job but Vaseline Machine Gun was a bit too fast.

  • Well played mate, great job. I was just wondering whats the difference between a 12 string accoustic and a 6 string, apart from the strings obviously.

    On a 6 string, regular tuning is E A D G B E

    Is the 12 string 2 x E, 2 x A, 2 x D, 2 x G, 2 x B, 2 x E, or does each second string differ?

    Thanks

    - bluNt

  • With a 12 string guitar, the second set of 6 strings is tuned EADGBE. The thinner strings of the sets are tuned one octave higher for strings 6-3. The top four strings are tuned in unison BBEE. Thus:

    eEaAdDgGBBEE

  • Great rhythm dude... how do you practice your timing, just with a simple metronome? I like your cover better even than any recordings I've heard played by Kottke himself, so I'm not even sure that's ok.

  • This is great! How long did it take you to learn Vaseline Machine Gun?

  • excellent!!!

  • wonderful - keep going on´- easter is marvellous!!!

  • Cole,

Well done, young man. You played both tunes with passion, skill, and enthusiasm.

    -John

    ~( ,o)====:::

  • So very well done. I love your description of how you approach playing these pieces. You're an inspiration. Hope to hear more from you.

  • Awesome covers - Easter is my favorite Kottke song and your rendition is spot on.

  • Hello young boy

    (excuse my english, i'm french)

1000 bravo for your playing; could you tell me about your tuning ? Thank you very much.

  • The best Vaseline "cover" I ever heard.

    Also noticeable the first part.

Thank you for putting them on You Tube.

  • Great covers!!!

  • was Easter and the Sargasso sea ever recorded by Leo Kottke? I can't find it anywhere?

  • It has been recorded under the titles "Easter and the Sargasso Sea" on Circle Round the Sun and 12 String Blues. It was also been recorded under the titles "Easter" and "Easter again.

  • What album is "Easter and the Sargasso Sea" on? Did Leo ever record it?

  • haha thanks guys

  • out of i'm sure hundreds, that i've seen, this is one of the best covers of any song on this site. greets from Madison

  • I'd date you if I was a chick man...keep rockin

  • WTF?

  • This is very well done! Thanks for sharing.

  • I love watching this video. I put it on my ipod so I can watch it whenever I want.

  • your awesome man

  • This is the first rendition I've seen that holds its own against the original! Really fantastic and an excellent transition.

  • The Song affected my heart ! You play it absolut Wonderful ! Maybe i can play it anyday nearly like you ? The Guitar i have too ! Jf 55-12

Big .. Big ... regards from a guitar student in Germany dkcpr

  • Cool man more vids on the way.

  • Wonderful playing! I love this video. I'm learning Easter myself at the moment and I'll be made up if I can do it as good as this.

  • Sooooooo beautiful! Brings tears to my eyes. I am speechless. Want MORE!!! :)

  • Thanks, I'll keep my chipolata fingers crossed. Keep up the good work!

  • Beautifully played: bravo, young man. Any chance of Kottke's "Crow River Waltz/Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring/Jack Fig" medley? Many people claim to play "Crow River Waltz" in this neck of the woods, but I'm not convinced by any of them. This, on the other hand, is the genuine "Easter/Vaseline Machine Gun" article. Well done again! And curse these chipolata fingers...

  • Nevermind, I found the tab. I learned it by watching this video... So thanks for that.

  • I've watched this like 3 times, please tell me where you learned both those songs!

  • Wow. Those harmonic bends in the first song were great. Vaseline Machine Gun was also done VERY well.

  • First of all, I must say that was awesome. I've been trying to find the music for "Vaseline machine gun machine gun" without much luck, how did you learn it?

  • There is a version in the book 'Leo Kottke - Eight Songs' by John Stropes. I think it is transcribed according to how Leo played it in the early 90's or thereabouts so its slightly different from the one on 6 and 12 String Guitar.

  • excellent stuff

  • that was awesome, leo is so amazing in concert and you covered him very well

  • You captured the "feel"..well done! I have uploaded a version of Vaseline Machine Gun recorded live like you have never seen before...check it out and let me know what you think! ~ Keep playing!

  • F... you play great! Sound very much like Leo!

    Regards Esben

  • Cole in my book your the best guitar player alive. soadkole 4 life <3

  • Nice job!

  • Awesome! One of the hardest aspects of playing a Kottke tune is doing so with "feeling". Kottke puts so much feeling into his tunes and for you as a young person able to capture it is wonderful!! You have a great ear for the master... but even better you have something that very few have that attempt to play a Kottke tune >>>>>>> Feeling!! VMG needs work with the slide and slow it down alittle.

  • Does anyone know if the song "Easter Again" is identical (save being on a six-sting) to "Easter and the Sargasso Sea?"

  • Wonderfull

  • good!yeah!

  • Very good indeed!

Easter is such a beautifull melody, well done!

  • Awesome!

  • if i closed my eyes, thats leo playing! superb take!!regards bluespower..

  • perfectly executed!

    very well done

  • nice job cole, well done keep up the good work. i just landed a copy of 20th century masters, after about 1 &1/2 years of trying on ebay. someone misspelled the title and i got it for $25, i've seen it sell for 5x that. anyhow nice jop, and keep posting!

  • I love how everyone give this weird smile before they play!

  • very nice. where d'you get the tab?

  • "Vaseline Machine Gun" can be found in the book "Eight Songs" by John Stropes under the name "Machine 3"

"Easter" is in the out of print book "20th Century Masters of Fingerstyle Guitar" also by John Stropes.

  • what tuning is vaseline machine gun? open D? great playing by the way. I love the way the slide sounds on a twelve string.
