the only notables we lose are zach follet, worrell william, anthony felder, cameron morrah and rulon davis. but when you add in brandon hampton and nate longshore it makes cal even better that they're gone! and syd'quan thompson is back baby!
Klaymen46 is absolutely right- the chanting had nothing to do with Xavier. It had EVERYTHING to do with the vol fans leaving the stadium... with one of their best players lying on the field no less. Sad to see that.
Anyway, great victory for Cal in a tough game. Best of luck to UT in the future.
I would like to think that would happen, but we have 5 professional sports team in a 15-20 mile radius of Berkeley. Lot's of competition. Students and alumni get you only so far.
while your team was the better tonight, the same cannot be said for the fucking trash that you call your fanbase, i can certainly say that i hope you weren't personally a part of that crowd and if you were you should be ashamed of yourself. cheering while a player is laying motionless on the field is the absolute definition of classlessness. it's apparent that californians seem to care more about trees than they do about people, and you all could stand to learn some respect
First off, I'd like to apologize and I want to say that every fan in the student section felt embarrassed about the chanting as soon as they realized a player was hurt and still on the field. The location of the injury on the field was actually a significant blind spot for most of the student section (blocked by the Cal sideline), but the chanting was replaced with a worried murmur as soon as the section saw a stretcher being brought in from the Tennessee sideline.
The chants were all directed at the mass of Tennessee fans that began to leave the stadium and they were started by a very inexperienced "mic-man" who hopefully didn't see the injury as well (otherwise, he's a dick). I'm not justifying what happened, just apologizing for my personal actions and shedding some light on the situation.
pretty much in line with everything i've heard from others as well, if so then apology accepted, on the same note phil fulmer said on his tv show this morning that while the injury looked bad, after CT scans and x-rays, xavier mitchell most likely has only a concussion so thank goodness
I heard about that radio report- even if thats an exaggeration and you cut that number in half, that's still 12-15k... like 20% of the stadium at full capacity. That's a BIG number. As much as I dislike the megaphone idea, it may prove to be useful. If we win, it helped. If not, lame idea.
Yeah I heard about the megaphone thing too, that's pretty funny, at least the fans are trying to match the intesity of the big time SEC stadiums. Still, it's not like Cal has a long standing tradition of football excellence like UT. You guys are still on the way up, hopefully someday your fans will be as passionate as ours cause there's nothing quite like it.
Here we go Bears!! 1 Day away!!! UT will be brining some noise, but lets make it louder!!! After all the hype this past week, I really don't know what to think about this game. I just hope the Bears respond well under the spotlight and take advantage of some UT mistakes on defense. I'm confident that the Bears can beat this UT team with their talent, but if I'm this anxious, how about the players?! Go BEARS!
there was a report on the radio here in Knoxville that TN is supposedly bringing 27,000 people to the game, that seems awful high to me, but either way, get ready for the Orange Invasion. GO VOLS!!!!!
and from what i've been seeing on the news, it appears that most of the noise around the stadium seems to be coming from those damn tree huggers outside. if i had been able to make the trip to berkeley i would have thrown an orange at one of them.
#1 runningback out, #1 tight ends out, no experience at receiver... UT is hurting right now on offense. If Cal doesn't win on Sep 1st, then I will be mortified.
fortunately runningback and tight end are two of the positions that we have some reasonable depth at, now as for the wide recievers, tennessee has had a niche over the past 15-20 years of having consistently good recievers, we have plenty of talent at the position, just not much experience
This is great stuff. I can go all day. I have been in countless debates since last fall at Neyland and I'm not over it, partly because my family from Ten. won't let me hear the end of it. Cal will silence them on Sep. 1st on their way to the rose bowl.
you must have some real faith in your bears this year. i still think that the pac 10 isn't nearly as deep top to bottom as the SEC, but still, beating USC is a whole other story from beating tennessee, i'm not totally dilusional, i know tennessee isn't the top five national power they were 10 years ago, i know peyton manning, al wilson, peerless price and company aren't walking through that door. but we're still a strong program hopefully building back up to that level
i don't really think either tennessee of cal is as strong as the teams that met last year, but if you guys can avenge last season by beating us and then keep it up and beat USC, which i hope you do (beat USC that is), cause i can't stand the trojans, then cal will certainly have earned my respect
thank you for these insightful comments. its pretty damn hard to find reasonable college football fans. with that said, GO BEARS WHHOOO GO BEARS!!!!!!
yep, saw the air force game- triple option offense. Cal played them the year before- had a little trouble with their fancy O line, made a couple adjustments at halftime, then pummeled them 56-14 in Colorado. And for the record, that's a coaching issue. UT should have been able to make those adjustments as well, especially at home.
The point is you can't write off a team on one loss, especially if you're bringing stadium crowd into it. UT and Cal are 2-1 lifetime, that's not domination.
fair point about the coaching, however, early last season we were still adjusting to a new offensive coordinator after years of us complaining about the predictablility of the offense, hopefully our coaches are on the right track now. you may as well not take into account the 77 and 87 games, nobody from those games has anything to do with the 06 or 07 game. i don't really know if cal is all that overrated, just what i saw last season, it'll all go away if cal shows up sept. 1
Cal is a good football team. It wasn't luck that left the mess called A&M behid at the Holiday bowl last year- I will say that UT looked REAL strong against Air Force- that was a display of defensive powerhouse against a WAC team that came down to the wire. And, how did that bowl game go against Penn State?! Mighty purty...
The only people in America that thought UT would beat Cal last season were in Vegas. Odds this year- Cal by 5.5.
did you even watch the air force game last year, because by my recollection the game was ppv only, i saw it because i was there, and tennessee did struggle against a very discipled team than ran a complicated offensive scheme totally unlike anything we face in the SEC, and as far as the bowl game goes, tennessee was so depleted by injuries by the end of the season that we were a shadow of the full strength team you faced in early september
Also, I was at Neyland for the Cal/UT game... doesn't live up to the hype. I think Longshore was more wacked out by the 2 toothed fans staring at him than the noise. It was shocking stuff.
ok fine, let's not talk about the stadiums, lets talk about the actual teams, CAL IS THE MOST FUCKING OVERRATED TEAM IN AMERICA!! you play in a bush league conference where you rack up wins against inferior competition and make the so called "experts" at ESPN think that you are good. for god's sake, lee corso was still hyping you guys for the national championship into the first part of november last season.
wtf? go to hell dude. you have no idea what you are talking about. if anything, they are the most underrated team in america. if you're calling the pac 10 the bush league, you must be some sort of big ten fan that wanted michigan to beat usc but instead got ass raped in the rose bowl.
MOST UNDERRATED TEAM IN THE COUNTRY!?!?! you have to be kidding me. if cal really does beat tennessee here in a couple weeks i'll be the first to admit that i was wrong, but until then i still say that underrated teams don't make a habit of falling behind 35-0 by the middle of the third quarter, and don't try and say you came back and made a game of it, cause all 18 of your points came after we had pulled the first teamers, that game could have easily been 50-0
ok. i may have been exaggerating cal as the most underrated team in the country. but there were so many factors that played against cal in that game. nate longshore was just came off a broken ankle. maybe if u saw cal just massacre texas a&m at the end of the season, u would notice that everyone was more comfortable. if cal and tennessee played on a neutral stadium at the end of week 13, cal would probably pull out the victory. however till sept 1st, ill shut up and see how the game turns out.
I thinks its funny when dips like bleedorange0037 come in and try to start talking trash and fail miserably... like the size of the stadium has anything to do with how they play. When you hit 80k, it doesn't really matter at that point... it's all a buzzing noise. However, Berkeley has a little surprise this year for UT anyway. Everyone will see it on game day. Whether it works or not, we'll find out.
also, it's pretty sad that your fans are posting things like, "everyone needs to go to the game against tennessee on Sept 1" here in tennessee it's a given that the house will be packed with 107,000 each weekend no matter who we play, and it's not like tennessee is going to be intimidated Nate Longshore style by the "massive" crowd of 75,000, there's 8 stadiums in the SEC bigger than that, so you guys had best bring your bibs, cause it's probably gonna get messy

so don't count on the crowd working in your favor the way it worked against you last year, tennessee plays in much more hostile environments on a week to week basis. cal had clearly never experienced anything like that before, and nate longshore and randy tedford even said so after the game
Nate Longshore said it because it was his FIRST GAME AS A PLAYER in college football. So of course, by default, that would be the most intimidating place to play. Also I don't recall Jeff Tedford saying that. However, I don't think anyone is arguing that Neyland is not an intimidating place to play, anywhere you have 100,000 fans with students is gonna get loud. However, in the pac-10, Autzen stadium, along with Pullman and of recent years memorial have intimidating reputations
yes, we both agree, i too can't wait for the sept. 1, it's gonna be great when we prove that last year wasn't just a fluke, and we prove once and for all that ESPN's darling child cal really is THAT overrated, hopefully then lee corso will finally jump off of that bandwagon
oh god... Espn's darling child???? I actually thought you were a self respecting and intelligent college football fan... The corso thing was the ONLY time we got national attention in the last 5 years. If you wanna talk about ESPN darling child, how about the whole SEC as a whole... I mean, even you can admit an east coast bias. The west doesn't even exist beside USC to most of the media
the darling child thing was mainly just related to corso last season, but that was just rediculous, maybe i am a little biased, as corso has been hating on tennessee for the last decade. the bias you speak of is not so much an east vs. west thing as it is a bias towards the "traditional powerhouse" schools, espn and all the networks want the schools with national fanbases (michigan, USC, notre dame, miami, etc.) to be good, because that is good for ratings

aaaah yes, a bcs playoff would certainly solve things, and I can finally agree with you on that. For some reason the dick of a pac 10 commissioner is the only one against the plus 1 system... go figure
yeah, plus that commissioner needs to look into having a conference championship game would be a good thing too, for the pac-10 and big 10, cause all the other bcs teams have that one extra hard game to go through, and yet another reason that the playing field isn't level for all conferences
nice video, where are all the highlights from the tennessee game last year, oh wait that's right, there weren't any, you were behind 35-0 midway through the third quarter
