GRATEFUL FOR SHARING. however will b happy if u resolve the diff in information bet ur account and those in "my name is gauhar ....." by vikram sampat. hv u uploaded the song "DHUN KALYAN dt bombay jul 1907? my e-mail is sabjanta@gmail.com. i hv some rare records too which i wd like to share but don't know how to digitieze. await to hear from u - cheers - sabjnta
someones asked for the urdu texst on the record cover. it says in urdu, "chalee gulzar-e-aalam mai havaa-e-fazl-e-rehmani", which roughly translates to "the breeze of the lord's compassion blows in this (worldly) garden". hope it helps. i think the lords compassion has indeed blessed this world albiet through the voice of gauhar jaan.......naveed siraj/karachi, pakistan
@dams0001 thanks for this. I confused it with the first comment requesting translation of the urdu cover. ras ke bhare tere nain would ofcourse be a praise for the beautiful eyes of the beloved.
@deevaan : maybe a full net search may reveal that recording existing somewhere; it's apparently nowhere available on YouTube.
Might be worthwhile to note here a strange twist of fate: the star that Gauhar Jaan was, commanding Rs. 3,000/- per song in her heyday, fell into such dire straits in later life that she had to "sell off" prized bandishes for Re. 1/- apiece just to make ends meet!
This was one of the most favourite and popular Mishra Bhairabi Thumri of all times...Most probably composed by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and sung by almost all legendary thumri maestros thereafter. Nawab Wajid Ali Shah would be ever remembered for his love of arts and patronage of music. Young Gauhar and her Mother Malka Jaan was a regular perfomer in the court of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah after he was exiled to Metia Buruj.
I read somewhere about Bajis or Courtesans that the tradition of the Indian courtesans died when the 20th century began to come around. Now only the music lived on and even then the modern students of these teacher still can't project the sensuality and eroticism that the Bajis had.

@deevaan But that is not the song being sung here; this song is "Ras ke bhare tere nain", a bhairavi thumri.

@deevaan : right, that only means that the cover shown in the video is not one for this, but some other recording.
dams0001 3 months ago
@dams0001 yes, most probably. maybe for this audio track, the cover is on the backside. would love to hear the one that i have translated. :)
