Miss Mississippi that year, Kathy Manning, is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. She was one of those women who literally took my breath away, and is also smart, and truly kind. A friend of mine who used to work for the MAO, said that the story was that Kathy was just too pretty to win that year, as the Organization was very nervous about extremely beautiful women winning after the Vanessa W scandal. Now, is there any truth to that nearly 30 years later? Who knows...
@pa634ntf4n That has happened in past also. Debbie Maffet did not use pins on Vanessa Williams. The 50th anniversary gold crown given to Phillis George dropped onto the runway while she did her walk. Also Leanza Cornet used no pins with Kim Aiken and hers almost fell. I will never understand why. I am in NO was being racist, rather curious b/c I just do not know, but is it possible that using pins to keep a crown in place on african american hair can damage it? I mean why did that happen?
@galileocan well I don't agree. Have you seen Dorothy Benham since she won Miss Amer 1977 AND gave birth to SIX children?? She consistently stood out when returning in later years. If you got to see the last pageant (90th anniv), I thought, that for their age, Dorothy Benham and Charlene Wells looked the most incredible, and I would also include Lee Merriweather and Heather Whitestone. But do NOT count out Dorothy Benham-I am sorry, but six vaginal births and it not showing is unreal.
@galileocan Wait. I guess I initially misunderstood you. You are saying that the winner that year, WHEN being crowned looked well into her 40's? You don't even think she might look mid to late 20's? If that is indeed what you are stating, I fear you have a distorted vision of what a 40 something looks like....first of all, her breasts would show signs of sagging even in that tight gown. Does she have any crows feet? Wrinkles?
Suzette Charles played right into the way MAO officials were mistreating Vanessa and turned a lot of people off. That's why black publications don't even bring her name up--ever! I remember the interview she did with Jane Pauley and Jane threw her a roll of film and the end of the interview and suzette caught it and laughed. That was a stab at Vanessa and the negatives that were never burnt.
@hr3george And you can claim this because why? Not even the earliest winners had very good quality to them for the official photos. Marjorie Vincent isn't exactly someone who would be considered a beauty. Seen her pics? The prelim judges at this contest clearly do not agree with you, b/c she was one of the three swimsuit preliminary winners.
@hr3george This hateful comment of yours just continues to bother me. Have you seen the video that someone put together of alll she did at the pageant that year? Her voice is quite good and I would say at par with other winners. Talent plays a lot into the final score. And you have NO idea how well she did in interview, which is essentially a job interview. Pageant historians and past winner have noted that the pageant is almost always won on in interview. This is NOT a beauty pageant. duh

This statement is completely without merit

I liked Sharlene Wells. I think she looked so much older when she won than when she came back. She still looks great today.

Ugliest winner ever. The virgin Mormon can thank Vanessa W. for most undeserving M.A. ever.
