  • Later they split up into the Family Matters, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper and Blossom casts.

  • why did they even bother??? Dolph had assumed room temperature, the cutest girl (lara) was gone, the jew (hendler) and brain-dead bimbo were gone - there was nothing left of the show.

  • She kicked the fu$&ing door down....She was Gangsta

  • @browseyfillerman I love u Nell!!!

  • its funny how rosetta lenoire and telma hopkins were on family matters after gimme a break ended

  • In This Clip, From 0:00 To 0:04, It Was WPXI-TV's Channel 11 News Nightbeat Video ID For Wednesday Night, December 3, 1986.

  • Lara Jill Miller and Kari Michaelsen were the only two reasons I watched this show, when they left I couldn't have cared less about some 80 y/o dude and the two Lawrence boys.

  • Why does this theme song make me wanna cry?

  • Rosie O'Donnell reportedly didn't get along with Nell Carter. She disliked being called by her character name on the set, but they did that because they didn't want Joey or Matthew (especially, being newer) to blow takes by calling them by their real names. They did the same with Full House. Candace, Jodie and the Olsen twins called the adults by their character names. The three ladies on the show were apparently let go by NBC... they didn't quit.

  • In some episodes from this season, Rosie O'Donnell is in the opening credits!

  • Notice how since season 3 it starts with Nell taking a picture of the cast?

  • Nell Carter ate herself to death.

  • I use to love this show.

  • It was around this time the Break! started to jump the shark. It's a red flag when a sitcom brings a cute little boy or girl on board (in this case it was two little boys--Joey and Matthew). Not suprisingly, it was cancelled soon after.

  • Joey was on the show three years before Matthew, but yes, having both Lawrence brothers on in that sixth season was a sign that NBC was desperate (as well as the producers).

  • I always found it suprising that while everyone got new intros for the move to New York, John Hoyt (grandpa) still had his "Glenlawn" opening.

  • lol why is half the cast of family matters in this show?

  • I wonder: did original NBC airings have the "In Stereo Where Available" logo in the final two seasons?

  • i could use a break right about now myself

  • What happened to the three girls? Where'd all these Lawrences come from? Who are these people?!

  • nell scared me when i was a kid but i loved the show anyway

  • "Nothing can get me down"

Then the door falls down. Ha!

  • I like this one better it sounds like a little bit of chaka khans "through the fire" thats why I like it

  • I love this show!!!! I hang my head in shame at these shows now in 2011..

  • forgot Joey Lawrence and his brother was on this show, Nell Carter super talented lady, more talent in her pinky than most people will ever have, really enjoyed this show back 20 something years ago

  • Awww, the Lawrence brothers!!! Sooo cuteeeeeeeee!!!!!

  • PLEASE bring real Black Woman Legend like Nell back. Get rid of Fake ones Rihanna, Beyonce.

  • R.I.P. Nell Carter, Dolph Sweet, and Rosetta LeNoire!

  • Nell Carter was A Legend ahead of her time and they need more people like her on television today.

  • ......i don't understand why people say that this version was whack and the original was better, i heard the original and to me this beats the original theme song anytime in my opinion.....

  • @80s90sRealBasketball yeah i like this version better too ya heard me?

  • It's ironic how I'm on the internet saying how the internet ruined everything. Everything seemed so close-knit back then.

  • Song is a dope 80's R&B track!!

  • this show was about kit kat bars

  • haha yes! You're from Pittsburgh too!

  • hahah where in da world did u find this? wowow u went waaay bck!

  • i LOVE Nell Carter she was great>..R.I.P. well she sadly and finally got her break she's been asking for and it's up in sitcom heaven.

  • @RKOVoices they need to do nell carters life story and the name of the movie should be called No one dried her tears the nell carter story and monique should playe her.

  • This is probably a co-incidence, but if you notice the name of the announcer at the beginning of this is "Mike Hambrick". My name is Mike Hambrook. I don't know what the odds of that are, but I should say that it is pretty much of a co-incidence to me.

  • 0:24 BUSTED!!

  • Family Matters almost looks like the same set.... Glad to see it carried on, and the theme songs from these shows in the 80's were EPIC! Sooooo many good memories, Nell could effing sing.

  • @nighttaco Well 2 future Family Matters stars were shown in this opening.

  • Good television is not made like this anymore.

    Thanks for the memories.

  • @soseztheleadr Me too. I wish they could bring these old shows like Gimme A Break, Diff'rent Strokes, and Facts of Life back on TV. In fact, the reruns should air on TV Land or TV One

  • WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE 80S

  • @kdpflanders1 back in the 80's. yeah

  • Omg, she had such a nice voice.... I loved this show so freaking much whenI was little

  • Comment removed

  • @wrongboi You might be on to something there! LOL

  • Lara Jill Miller (Sam) still beautiful at like 41 im 38. Just fond out she was born n the same state I live PA only like 80 miles away from were I was born n live. I never asked a girl to marry me but wen ever im in Allentown again n I happon to maybe c her Im going to get on one knee in tell her how beautiful i thought she was in Gimme a Break and still how beautiful she is in then say Marry me lol.

  • @EnglshRoc Dude, I had the same idea, I was just introduced to her in a different way. You ever see Digimon? Well, LJM is the voice of Kari.

  • The show transitioned after Dolph Sweet died. They completely changed the direction of the show.

  • what is with those damn Lawrence brothers and the friggin' bowl cut.

  • I noticed the grandmother from FAMILY MATTERS is on there. I don't recall that. What was her role?

  • @MegaTyler98 she played Nell's mama Maybelle... she made guest appearances in earlier seasons, but this was the only season she was given title billing, from what I've heard.

  • Damn. Nell was a lot of woman.

  • @Thomistica She could belt out a toon, too.

  • ahh, those good ol' 80s news briefs before the start of a sitcom! lol...love it. this by far was my favorite of all the intros. wonderful memories of being a child in the late 80s.

  • Oh, the womderful sitcoms of the 80s and 90s are truly missed.

  • Wish TvLand would bring this show back to the TV screen. I love Nell Carter!!

  • Monique! She couldn't touch the great Nell Carter in any thing she did. Especially in CLASS!

  • You got that right! If I had a choice who to go out with, I would chose Nell over Monique. @madfurby

  • For those who didn't know, VEI is releasing a Complete Series DVD box set on July 20, 2010. Amazon.ca has it for under $45 (a STEAL for 125+ episodes) and they are Region 1 and will play on US DVD players. Get it, because Universal is never going to resume releasing this show.

  • Matthew Lawrence was so cute playing that baby guitar & singing. Least he co ntinued the streak on Brotherly Love & Boy Meets World.

  • Classic!!! What a voice!

  • rip nell. fucking awesome memories! ty so much

  • I miss this show!!! I liked to watch her and loved to hear her sing!!! She is truly an orginial and will be missed!!!! RIP Nell!!!

  • holy shit grandma and the sister from family matters was on this!??!

  • These were the good ole days, the days when quality shows got a chance to grow on the viewing public. Nowadays if a show doesn't do well in the ratings right off the bat, it's immediately replaced, usually with some piece of crap reality show. I miss sitcoms like this one.

  • This show became Different Strokes in reverse. A black woman adopts two white boys.

  • I wish this show would last through the early 90s until Nell started appear on Hangin With Mr. Cooper show in 1993. Love this show much.

    R.I.P Nell Carter.

  • Telma Hopkins is so pretty. Even with age she is still so hot.

  • Right on italianman1992...great intro. In fact, the intro was so cool, that back in the day it probably kept people watching the show. It was such a feel good opening song, mom, dad and the fam probably just kept watching the entire episode.

  • I love this intro! Very 80s. I wish they re-ran it. RIP Nell Carter. Also cool that Telma and Rosetta both later appeared on FAMILY MATTERS!

  • @italianman1992 It's funny too, how Aunt Rachel and Addie, I COULD see the same person in both. Whereas, Rosetta was the calm cool hip Grandma in Family Matters, but a complete nag of a Mom to Nell in Gimme a Break! Kind of like how John Tutturo plays a racist guy in Do the Right Thing, and an open-minded guy in Jungle Fever.

  • Even though the two last season were all downhill, I do love this version better than the first 4 seasons: "For Heaven's sakes, what happened to my piece of the cake?" yeah didn't like that one nearly as much as "Nothing can stop me now!"

  • Do you know what my piece of the cake mean't ? It went perfectly with the first two seasons. @imachildofthe80s8089

  • 'putting a new face on the old one'?! i fucking knew it! i knew this goddamn show was about the texas chainsaw massacre. fuck!

  • How the hell she bust down the door @0:25!!

  • This show just went strait to the shithole when that goddamn Lawerance kid was added, the Chief died, the girls leave,Neil moves to New York, and another goddamn Lawerance kid was added!!!!

  • The show didn;t go down because of Joey Lawerance, it went down because of the death of the chief, I still don't understand why? because Gimme a break was a show developed around Nell by NBC.@gtz1975

  • Joey Lawerance was responsible for Dolph Sweet's death.Dolph Sweet (may he rest in peace) died of CANCER. Those god damn fucken Larence kids are the biggest CANCERS of them all!!!

  • @gtz1975 That's an awful thing to "say", yet funny

  • seasons 5 and 6 were pretty much on life support when Dolph Sweet died and NBC put the show out of its misery by changing it weekly scheldule.

  • just like eight simple rules without John Ritter. When I was 11, I used to joke that Dolph Sweet died because the rotund Nell ate him... Nell Carter did pass away as well, I believe from Diabetes.

  • Loved the show, but it kind of annoys me that the guy who did the handclaps for that song never once got the recognition he so deserved.

  • I did not know Rosetta Lenoire and Telma Hopkins were bothj on "Gimme a Break"! They both moved to family Matters in 1989.

  • Yes indeed. Telma Hopkins played Nell's sexy friend Addie and Rosetta Lenoire was Nell's no-nonsense, tell it like it is momma(alot like Estelle Winslow on FM) Telma's had quite a career, before both GAB and FM, she was one of the girls living at the Susan B. Anthony hotel on Bosome Buddies(Tom Hanks and Peter scolari) and way before even BB she was one of the two girls of Dawn, from the group Tony Orlando @ Dawn

  • This sounds like a Graydon/Richard Page song...now, hearing the BV's, I know that's Richard Page (Mr. Mister)

  • Exactly, they actually penned the song. I wish I could hear more of their stuff, they're both so talented!

  • I agree the show was ok but I love this version of the theme song.

  • Comment removed

  • I was always following Nell after Gimme a break I was always wanted to know what happened to her.@MrCovering

  • @SNSW1

    She died in 2003.

  • Oddly, both Telma Hopkins & Rosetta LeNoire would be reuninted on the show Family Matters a few years later.

  • Holy crap, who knew this show had all these names.

  • The "film at 11" lead-in makes this even better. Nell had such a distinctive and wonderful voice.

  • btw laurie.....NOW is a comcasr jew....

  • LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 0:24- What episode is that part from? I wanna see it, cause from the way Nell knocked down that door, somebody's gotten on her bad side fo' real!

  • its was below sea level

  • sad episode towards the end but at least the show ended in a good outcome. anyone have the other half of the episode joey?? i want 2 see what happens when nell takes joey in as a permanent house member

  • Thanks dudex65!

  • The epsoide is called Below Sea Level it's on you tube.@blueplague888

  • where is the setting at :16? is that new york city park or something? looks so nice

  • They were in Central Park?

  • I didn't like this season at all, it was totally different because they dropped half the cast, moved from Glenlawn to New York and kept about four cast members or so, this season was boring.

  • I have no recollection of there being a season 6 of this show!! I must have lost interest by this point. I LOVED at least the first 3 seasons when all the daughters were on it. I remember the dad dying in real life and feeling really sad about it.

  • A great theme song

  • True, I like this theme song better then season one's theme.

  • I didn't know that Rosetta LeNoire was on Give Me A Break! I liked her and Telma Hopkins on Family Matters. I guess it was about 25 years ago that I watched this show and I have totally forgot that they were on Give Me a Break!

  • before there was Monique, there was Nell Carter. She was big, beautiful, and sexy as well as fiesty. Very comfortable in her own skin and proud.

  • i agree

  • I don't think Mo'nique should play Nell Carter, there are lookalikes and impersonators who can act closer to Nell than Mo'nique can, They need to pick from a pool of those people first, before they just give a actor in hollywood, most lookalikes and impersonators, could display her better on the screen. Just because Mo'nique is heavy set just like Nell dosen't mean she should get the role, I feel Nell Carter Comic talent is much different fromMo'nique's. @LeeColby1

  • Comment removed

  • @LeeColby1 you know i can get black fags to fuck me cuz i'm blond. too bad auntruckus got flagged for that vid though. tee he he

  • I understand where you are coming from, but I still don't like the idea that people are pushing Mo'nique as if she was the Next Nell Carter, Yes the similarities are true you wrote above, but except Nell branched into being a comdian later on, as people where labeling her the An't Misbehavin girl when she won tony from that musical, she did not like that and tryed out for the role in LOBO on NBC ratings went up when apppeared on that show. @LeeColby1

  • Read some of the articles on google about Gimme a break or Nell on google, about Nell Carter, Nell Carter is very different then what you might think. I have to look at the whole Hattie McDaniel thing to see what you are talking about, Remember Nell had it alot harder than Mo'nique did she turned down the Musical Dream girls for Gimme a Break, and defended herself when other made comments about her role as a house keeper.

  • @LeeColby1 unblock me mammy.... NOW. do it wench

  • Comment removed

  • @innocentblondbabe I'll unblock you baby when you start praising the lord again and stalking someone else ok. Hey do me a favor tell stuntmasterunion I have his picture and he sure is ugly lol.

  • @LeeColby1 another sistah offending brothas (with that condom vid). keep driving the brothas to us! woo-hoo! and an average white girl can get a man before a pretty black chick. lol beggin brothas for what i get.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, there's a big difference in Nell Carters weight from the first season to the 6th, that big sitcom paycheck made for some good meals.

And is there any black sitcom in the history of television that did'nt have Thelma Hopkins in it?

  • This is the Anthem! you gotta wave you guns in the sky on this one.

  • How many shows was Telma Hopkins on? Damn everytime I turn around, she's on somebodies show.

  • I watched this show when I was in preschool and kindergarten. Like many '80s sitcoms, the theme song for this show was better than the actual show.

  • lol I thought I was the only one that noticed that about the 80s..All these shows like care bears, jem, family ties, alf, another world (amongst others) all had such great theme songs but I couldn't watch five minutes of the actual show

  • Comment removed

  • I agree with you! I've never watched Gimme a Break but I LOVE the intro. It SCREAMS 80s. There's a lot of tv shows with great intros but don't really care too much about the actual show. Also I love ALF. I'm 21 (born in 1989 NOT 1992) and I wish I was around to watch all these. Would've def. tuned in every week for ALF if I was around back then, lol. Nell Carter has such a great voice! Too bad she's no longer with us.

  • @italianman1992 Nice comment... simpler and more innocent times in many ways were the 80s.

  • too funny...

  • THIS SHOW WENT ON FOR 6YRS ? WTF!

  • Telma was good on GAB. Remember Nell body slamming her little skinny butt onto a sofa in one ep.

  • I remember that. That was scary to me. LOL.

  • I love the way she says "ready for anything."

  • Nell Carter was and always will be one of the best. I love this show. It's one of my all-time favorites. It's really a shame that people have to make negative comments here at all about any of the characters.

  • looking at your pic, u need a new style

  • the producers should have realized that having matthew lawrence on the series was the end, joey was annoying enough but in addition to joey, who the hell really wanted to see that little white piece of shit

  • You know what, I think I've seen this intro back in the 90s or maybe early 00s.

  • Man, was Telma Hopkins busy!

First, she's in the group Tony Orlando & Dawn, then on to Bosom Buddies, Gimme a Break, Family Matters, The Hughleys, Half & Half - wow!

  • and don't forget about Getting By (another Miller-Boyett Show) and a Guest Appearance on The Nanny.

  • i loved this show. it sucks they only released on season on dvd. they need to put the rest of the show out on dvd. That and New York Undercover

  • People like Roesetta Lenoire and Nell Carter need to have a marithone of the shows they been on. Nell Carter (Famous for Gimme A Break!, And the show with Vanesee Williams)

And Ms.Lenoire is more famoused for being played as "Mama" Winslow on the Famil Matters.

  • Nell Carter also starred in Hangin' with Mr. Cooper.

  • Yeah. Ms. Lenoire was also on the show Amen starring Sherman Hemsly AND she was in an episode of Good Times. She's acted for years, God rest her soul.

  • kit kat bar

  • Almost half the cast of Family Matters was transplanted from other shows. Harriett was originally on "Perfect Strangers" and of course Rachel and Mother Winslow were both on "Gimme-A-Break!".

  • During this season, Rosie O'Donnell was sometimes featured in the opening credits. She played their neighbor Maggie.

  • No wonder the show was cancelled after that season!

  • RIP Nell Carter. ;_;

    Great show!

  • i would love to see this show

  • After that theme song, I need a break. lol JK. I love it. lol

  • Wow...I love this show...

  • Reminds me of when I was six years old and threw up milk of magnesia while this was playing.

  • I was 6 in 1986 too!!! theis was the show I'm glad I was an 80's babies!!!

  • i too was 6

  • Wow have not seen this in years....

    great memories!

  • did rosetta lenoire also played in a TV show family matters 6 years later @ 0:35?

  • yes she did, her and Telma Hopkins.lol

  • Nell Carter was definitely the glue that held the show together, but the later seasons really sucked when almost all the original characters were gone.

  • I agree!

  • Only Lara Jill
