I live in a NASA town; my family and friends all work for NASA and contractors. We just got hit with a huge amount of layoffs and expect more by September. We have no space program at present--no mission--no initiatives. I voted for Obama but I didn't expect this. In order to avoid joblessness, most of the engineers I know are going to have to leave the space industry to go work for the army making things that kill people. With two wars on, that's where the only jobs are.

"Making things that kill people" isn't really a job for the army. It's companies like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman. The space shuttle was planned to retire before Obama set foot in office. Your engineer friends are fine, and they knew what was coming.
