  • Oh... and Sommer ripped off Francis Bruguière's "cameraless abstractions" as well. Sommers smoke on glass series was done in 1961. Bruguière's work was done 1936. No coincidence. Sad considering he talks about "newness" being important and that a well made "photograph must bring something that no other photograph has brought before" in this interview. Well he did say he was lazy.

  • I always thought that there was some deep philosophical reason for Sommer photographing chicken parts and the severed foot etc. Apparently not. Rather simplistic rational for making the images. Disappointing really. Sommer was a masterful technician but the content of his images just had the veneer of complexity. As for his cut paper images he ripped off Francis Bruguière. (1879-1945)

  • What a delight and surprise, to finally, 'hear' on of my teacher's teachers, speak. Thank you for sharing

  • it's a shame his most insight idea was the last thing he said, but she just ended it... oh well.

  • Thank you for supplying this mad scientist. He really cut through...
