I feel sorry for anyone who thinks that this can be topped, it has got to be the nearest thing to musical perfection there can possibly be. What a song, what an arrangement, what a singer ! No one could ever categorize them, they were just " The Carpenters "
Long ago but not so far away I fell in love with her.......So many of did..........aw we wathced and dreamed and thought she would come back again someday maybe..........
To Respond to an earlier comment. Randy Schmidt & I are all good as far as I'm concerned, we can be friends, I could actually add many chapters to the book (Little Girl Blue) HOWEVER, that's really the only area we differ, if I didn't get blessings from RC to do a book I wouldn't. That's just me. We all share the Love for Karen, in different ways, some as fans, some as friends, & some as family & I would like to believe Randy does as well. Little Girl Blue is 100% accurate no question about it!
Karen, how sad you never felt the love that your voice inspired... I've often wished I could have shared your music with you but alas, we would never have met anyway. Yet, your voice continues to haunt my memory. Richard, you gave her your soul, let her be the star... and I know you died when she died. Thank you from my heart for letting us remember.
Few teenagers in the 1970s would admit to liking the Carpenters but, as an "AM girl," I loved them and still do. This song, in my opinion, was one of the best they ever recorded. Karen was one of the best female vocalists ever. Richard put the group together, wrote a lot of the songs, orchestrated all the arrangements (sometimes he didn't get credit for it) and Karen was an excellent drummer--she considered her singing talent a bonus. But it was her vocals that sold the records. RIP Karen.
@wlhardy That happened with Abba too. It was "not done" to like that music. I did. And I absolutely loved the Carpenters. I was sooo devastated when she died!!
@wlhardy You got that right YongGun66! The other thing, back in the day you couldn't tell if it was "live or memorex" No bending or blending in the studio like the today so called artists that need to lip-sync on stage. Are you listening Miley and Britney?
This is one of the finest voices in the business. Another one is Cher. The difference though is night and day. I've thought Cher has the one of the richest voices. Full of harmonics and other vocal artifacts etc that make it so. Karen's voice is pure and utterly clean; the other end of the scale. As pure as a lead glass crystal..
If Richard decides that he wants to release any additional Carpenters Christmas music to the public,it's up to Richard. Same thing holds true with all of the Carpenter specials for DVD purchase. Richards a Husband, a Dad who has very talented children, perhaps the next generation of Carpenters I think so. Rich can do his music now under his own terms & enjoy the fruits of his Labor. @snacks123 I've been split on who's version is the best for years. I think it depends on what mood I'm in. I love Karen's clarity of voice and the fact that she just sings the song without any extras. But when I need some soulful deliverance Luther is unbeatable. However, Whitney Houston did a very impromptu acapella version in 2004 after Luther had his stroke. I have a feeling hers would've been my favourite if she had recorded it. Cut & paste: Superstar(Until You Come Back) live in Hong Kong
@eugene1 Just my opinion Eugene, but no one could sing this better than Karen Carpenter. I am biased because I think Karen Carpenter had the absolute best voice in modern day pop history. No one in my mind has ever come close. As far as Whitney Houston goes, I never liked her. She had abilities, but she would oversing songs to me and she would use the vocal acrobatics and screaming sometime. Now it is just moot because the woman has completely ruined any voice she had by her drug abuse,
@Purple1984Rain I agree totally purple. I do like Celine Dion out of that lot, but I never was a fan of Mariah or Whitney. I have spent my whole life being a pop music buff and somewhat of a historian so I have heard lots of people and songs in my life and Karen Carpenter just is in a league of her own. She is also one of the few people who can sing flawless live. You can't even tell the difference! I just wish music would turn back to a place where songs had a melody and were memorable.
@Purple1984Rain I have to disagree. Luther's version is better, way better. Its more heart breaking, musically lush, haughting and of course soulful. Luther took the song and made it his own. He even added to it. The "Until You Come Back To Me" part was genius.
@enmaxus Many singers have recorded this song but Karen Carpenter sang the definitive version & the Carpenters were the only ones to make it a famous hit record. That says a lot about who most people think does the best version. Luther Vandross's slow whiny R&B version only appealed to a small group when he released it as a single. It bombed, peaking at only #87 on Billboard charts while the Carpenters' version peaked at #2.
@JimmyPorsche Look now, I did not insult Karens vocals although I love the Carpenters music and I love Karens version. Luthers version peaked at #3 on the R&B charts. Karens version simple yet beautiful. Luthers version soulful. LOL@ "slow, whiney." I see you have had your bowl of Hate cereal...lol! However, Im not hear to argue whose version is better but I respect your opinion. Have a good holiday.
@JimmyPorsche While the Billboard charts indicate the then current listening trend...it pales in comparison with the many hits on youtube for Mr. Vandross version. I personally like them both.
Her voice will always have a special place in my heart. It's very sad to think of how young she left us. For that, I can't listen to a Carpenter's song without getting misty eyed.
This song has a haunting atmosphere feeling to it. I can't help thinking after all these years that her death and this song are some how linked together. don't ask me why just a feeling.
@WOLLSTONECRAFTxx I see what you mean by that, but I always thought "Goodbye To Love" was accurate when it came to her. Maybe, we're both just exaggerating though...Either way, it's a shame how this song has been devalued in movies. It's not a joking kind of song in any way.
I was a hard rocker back in those days....but even I was knocked out by Karen...even if I didnt admit it to my bros..she was SPECIAL....always will be
boy i wish i had paid more attention to this group in the 1970's.they really recorded some pretty songs . and her voice sooo.. smooth, sooo.. purrfect, sooo. easy on the ears.she is the 'superstar"
I even listen to The Carpenters when I work out at the gym. How lame is that?? :)) Karen's voice is like crack for music lovers. You keep coming back for more and more and it's stil somehow never enough!
Only the good die young. Karen had the most angelic voice I've heard to this day. Ann Wilson for female rock vocals and Karen for pop. Doesn't get any better.
The sound from building to building certainly varies in concert venues, but I have to say that The Carpenters sound was so close everytime it just about sounded like the record. Karen had a way of streching a vocal if she had to. (meaning if she wasen't having her best night, which was rare) They expected the band to be up to par everynight as well, no question about that. Believe me Karen was a great drummer, but the truth is that Cubby O'brien was responsible for alot of that sound. GB KC
Rainy Days and this song are my favorites. Beautiful, rich, deeper tones to Karen's voice make this song a stand out. The chorus part disappoints in that it becomes a bit bubblegum pop, in stark contrast to the forlorn melancholy of the intro.
The special thing that song theorists and critics fail to realize is that while many sang this song, Karen Carpenter made it her own. There never has been, and suspect there will be another voice like hers. The sad, haunting melody lives deep in everyone's soul...and is truly poignant as it is true. History was made here and will live forever. Love you, Karen!
Karen's incredible voice is just the finest thing that can be bestowed on any living creatures ear, not only does it lift the soul but it gives you an almighty hug at the same time! I dearly miss her so very much! xx
"Superstar" is a 1969 song written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell (Delaney & Bonnie and Friends). The Carpenters version is the most famous. A wonderful song...
Nobody has, nor ever shall have, her voice. When I reach heaven, all the choirs of angels will fall silent as even their voices won't be as beautiful as hers.
One of my favorite Carpenter songs. She was such a class act! Karen was young, healthy, looking great and carried herself in perfect voice with such professional posturing. Her angelic voice will echo for numerous generations.
I hope Randy Schmidt (Author of Little Girl Blue) had the chance to watch Piers Morgan's interview with Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine Jackson, where Jermaine talks about how people write "UNAUTHORIZED" books about celebrities. Sound familiar Carpenter fans??? For as many people who have bought & read his mere pamplet of a book. Family, Friends, people who lived & toured it know most.
Tell your freinds if they knew anything about music they would appreciate her as much as you do. Karen was the greatest female pop singer that ever lived imo. The music industry has never been the same since.
Perfection!

Q. Did Mr. Schmidt ever even meet Karen?
A. NO!
Q. What would Karen think of the book?
A. She wouldn't

Tell your freinds if they knew anything about music they would appreciate her as much as you do. Karen was the greatest female pop singer that ever lived imo. The music industry has never been the same since.
