  • Just like scuba diving used to claim LOTS of lives back in the 50's and 60's, caving should require training and a certification to do it. I am not into letting the government dictate our lives but in this case, as in scuba, ignorance and lack of skill kills- not the activity itself. God bless the family and John.

  • SAD STORY

  • why seal it, i mean its sad that the guy died, but maybe wait till the corpse turn to bone and retrieve the bone. and then give the guy a proper burial.

  • people die in caves all around the world. here in north florida we have canes we call them springs. people scubadive in them for miles in the earth. sometimes they die. i think permentally closeing the cave was probaly a bad idea. some of the springs here in florida are--blue springs--ginny springs--go to florida springs.com if you care to see them. THEY ARE REALLY NISE.

  • This Is Called Police State. Where No One Knows, and everybody Hollds. I am sorry for his familie, but that is not The best reason to Close Anything. People Should know what they go into, and they should BE FRI TO CHOICE. So if you are Helping ............. People to Inslave you all more and more and bet By Bet YOU ARE LIKE THEM... The Police State....!!??

  • @LetsFri Shut up goat banger.

  • this whole story was so so sad! RIP

  • I was a friend of John. I worked with him over a year and he was one of the most genuine individuals I have ever met. He never spoke ill of anybody and was always the first to help when some one was in need of something. I am very saddend by the news of his death; he was (and still is) a great guy. We love you John. Know that our prayers are going out to your family.

  • I think that the experienced cavers who lived in the area, and who were familiar with Nutty Putty Cave should have been allowed to make the first attempts to free the young man that got stuck. The UVA student was in there for 28 hours and after the pulley system failed it didn't seem like the rescurers were agressively anxious to make any additional attempts to free the man or bring him out. Just my opionion

  • I don't think it has much to do with experience, John crawled in so deep that noone was able to pull him out.

In my OPINION, they did everything they could. I heard the family was there too, so it's only natural the rescuers tried their best. I give them credit for their bravery though, they were risking their lives too.

  • My sincere condolences for John's death. May happy memories of his life give you spiritual comfort in this sad time.

  • I agree... it's a bad decision to close the cave. Whatever happened to the concept of moving on despite adversity? Are we now a nation of quitters because of this unfortunate event? With that mindset we would have never gone to the moon. Life has risks my friends, nothing is 100 percent safe. That's one of the reasons people explore caves in the first place... there's a bit of a rush involved. As long as you know what you're doing... keep moving forward. The cave should remain open I say.

  • You sound really smart.

  • Let me put it this way...

It's called: Showing that you're not an asshole business minded fuckweed. To put it simply, they're doing it because it's a nice gesture.

Although sealing it is a bad idea. A memorial would've been more intelligent but, who the fuck knows...

  • Only one thing comes to mind.

    Darwinism.

Too bad he ruined it for everyone else.

  • So you're saying he was foolish for going in the cave knowing it was dangerous, but at the same time you're lamenting the fact that he "ruined" everyone else's chance to do so. Maybe i'm misunderstanding you but these two notions seem to conflict with each other, No?

  • I don't think he was foolish for going in the cave, but his decision to squeeze himself upside-down into a very tight vertical crack was certainly unwise--a high risk he should not have taken. I don't think the cave is dangerous per se, but there are places there where you can put your life in danger if you don't exercise good judgment.

  • @skunkapotamus---- Your a dick dude!!! "Too bad he ruined it for everyone else." Your a fucking asshole!!!!! So does that mean that you don't even care that this guy is dead????

  • Do you REALLY care that some stranger wormed his way into a hole in a rock and died? What I care about is closing the access to the future people who might want to explore the cave. Another words, fuck that idiot.

  • @skunkapotamus

I don't even like caves but I can't have people dying even if they are really good at it.

  • This is a bad decision. We need to get his body out from that cave. That cave was formed millions of years and no way that cave is not going to be later open in the future for more studies.

  • I agree. Or at least have just the part of the cave where his body lays closed off.

  • Yeah that way people aren't going to be able to leave bud light cans and human waste in it any more. Nutty Putty was known as a trashy cave and some even called it "sacrificial" as in, they let any one explore it to keep nearby caves pristine.

  • nice visuals tragic story
