Better is a decision you can make. Some prefer the cleanliness of using a paper filter, which can accent coffees higher in acidity. Some the viscosity of the french press which allows more oils and some grounds into the cup, thus intensifying body. I don't think there is a universal brewing method that works for all coffees, just takes some experimentation to find what's right.
Once you get the hang of it, it's way easier than using a coffee maker if you take cleaning into account. I also like the fact that I have more control over the strength of my coffee. For instance, if I want it really strong, I just pour the water really slowly. Just wondering though... is coffee better from a french press or a melita filter?
