Do soldiers pick their primary weapon? I see some guys have M4s, shotguns, m16, machinguns.

Usually assigned by the need in a fireteam/squad. A 4-man fireteam will typically have a M249 SAW, a DMR (designated marksman) and 2 M4's... one of which usually has a 40mm M203 grenade launcher on it. The shotgun might be carried by the SAW gunner or one of the riflemen and primarily fires door-breeching rounds.

Who caries what is usually determined by qualification.

We are staying because it states in the Geneva convention that you cannot destroy a country and leave. If we did that, Iraq would be in complete anarchy, like somalia. We need to build the country into one that can handle itself. That takes time.

The real way to fight these guerrilla wars is to fight psychologically. Force on Force produces more insurgents. Just because we can kill them doesn't mean they'll stop.

It's very much like what the NVA general said in We Were Soldiers. "So they'll think this was a victory. And they'll keep fighting. And this war will end as a loss as it only can. The only difference is how many people will die getting there."

well lucky, its certainly a good mix ratio of both. you need to kill any enemy, but especially ones that will never change,like Jihadist's. and one also needs a healthy dose of pyschological warfare in as well,especially since in order to defeat jihadists...you have to make them fear you more than God.

check out the books and articles written by Ralph Peters, a great former army analyst.

(Note: I'm not advertising anything,just reccomending great reads on modern conflict and jihad.)
