  • The real smell in the trenches mustve been terrible; rotting corpses, cordite, smoke, damp, human sweat, the occassional smell of cigarettes or frying bacon.

I kinda like the trench smell in the IWM

  • @mwilso I am sure the smell was much worse - but then they are making the effort.

(BTW don't get your girlfriend a perfume like the one used by the IWM unless you want to end the relationship....!!)

  • Have there ever been any exhibits featuring statues of nazi experiments?

  • @LeppardPrintAnimal I don't think so as it does not sound like the sort of thing the IWM does. It does have the holocaust exhibition though on the third and fourth floors.

  • @alanheath3 I just had a nightmare about such an exhibition and I wasn't sure if my brain had imagined it or if it had really been there.

  • @LeppardPrintAnimal Maybe it is the sort of thing you think might be there. That is how dreams often work!

  • I went there in about 1991 aged 8, and I was so terrified that I still have nightmares about it to this day.

  • @LeppardPrintAnimal Oh dear, that is a bad case of trauma! Best give it a miss in future - or go to there to confront it. I do not know which is the best solution!

  • @alanheath3 You know the trenches stink of lamb? And all of the holocaust stuff, I was so scared after all of this that I couldn't eat meat or look in a butchers shop window ever again. I have been vegetarian for nearly 20 years because of this and I don't even want to be one!

  • @LeppardPrintAnimal I have never considered this lamb idea but I think I can see where you may be coming from. It is much healthier to be vegetarian so be glad of it!

On the subject of the holocaust, I have got a lot of films on that subject - if you are interested!

  • @alanheath3 I don't want to be vggie though! I had hypnotism to get over it but it didn't help! Are your videos on youtube? Also, can you remember if the IWM had an exhibit featuring statues or waxworks of nazi doctors doing experiments on people?

  • @LeppardPrintAnimal I am a pseudo vegetarian - I eat meat when people give it to me but don't have it at home. My own research on the holocaust is on you tube on my first channel (alanheath) - a lot of material from all the death camps in Poland . There are no waxworks of Nazi doctors at the IMW!

  • the smell is great brings me back to childhood

  • The realism in the trench was unbelievable i loved it. But the smell, it reeked in there!

  • Sometimes the smell goes through the entire lower floor - giving the whole museum a more realistic feel!!

  • Could you tell what the dude in the first bunker was saying? It was something like: lay down suppressing fire at these coordinates B155 A286. Hello, hello? Did you get that?

  • @alanheath Totally agree

  • Its not exactly a bad smell is it?...I went today and the smell gives a real feeling of being there plus...I really don't mind it.

  • i was in there,in year 6 for our school trip

  • i loved the little telescope that made it look like miles of no mans land!

  • This is nostalgic, especially that trench smell.

  • It absolutely STINKS in there! Thanks for the video, though. I love the Imperial War Museum.

  • the smell is so unique :)

  • my brother smells of the trench tang.. i think it might be his hair.

  • Yes, that is correct.

    Underground : Lambeth North.

  • I didn't make it to this museum but I have read a lot about the Great War.

  • Hey. A good book I recommend to you is "The Soldiers War" by Richard Van Emden.

  • I almost thought you was down the trenches in 1915 until I heard the squeaky doors, lol. You're right, it doesn't quite give a feeling of realism but the scaled model they displyed of the ww1 battlefield showing the front, support, reserve trenches and no mans land was very good

  • Yes, absolutely and I remember seeing this on a visit with my father which must have been no earlier than 1975.

For the trench to be realistic it would need to be covered in mud and water and that would be rather difficult.

The blitz scenario is good and worth a try - I have not got a film of it though!
