why does everybody hate lars? the drummer of mastodon is like lars from the 80s. he came up with really tight progressive beats. why are people so fucking stupid?
metallica didnt just write music. they made epic masterpieces... and they are amazing. i am not a huge fan past the black album but come on, these guys are legendary and are the best metal band of their time...without doubt. and as far as lars being a douche he has every right. i am a musician and if being a musician is the only thing you do for money and have no other way to support yourself and you dream and talent then i would be pissed if people ripped my shit off...
Not a big fan of this cover. I love Metallica, I like Mastodon, but this cover just feels wrong to me. It seems almost like the guitars are out of tune. It's a shame 'cause this is one of my favorite Metallica songs.
@StreetSoldier88 Now there is no need to start going off and calling people names and shit for people thinking differently. I personally don't think Kirk is that good. I mean really, if I fucked with a wah pedal and a few major scales I could be just as good. Too bad I'm about to sell my wah pedal, I could be in Metallica. LOL
Why does everyone just rag on Metallica endlessly, or on a couple of members?? It's so stupid and trite at this stage. If you like Metallica, and I guess you do just shut up and enjoy what they've given you. They've given me so much influence since I was a kid, why should I just shite on with useless drivel about them.
@DDevilized Technically he´s not playing to his limits, thats for sure. But if you asked him, he´d tell you that he was super happy to be part of his project and it´s an honour for him to play that song. You know, it´s not all about who´s the better player, it´s about musicianship. And on that point, Lars can kick almost anyone´s ass! although this song was mainly written by Cliff, but still... ;-)
I like how this distinctly sounds like Mastodon is playing it. For the first minute and a half, I kept expecting to hear the vocals from 'colony of birchmen'
Bass solo was straight wrecked. I don't care if he wasn't trying to play the exact same thing which he obviously wasn't, but it was still played like shit.
Idk why everyone has to get on these boards and do nothing but bitch! I'm a Metallica Freak, and I find this to be right up there in the best covers I've heard. So quit your bitching, people, and just enjoy the fucking song! Oh, and btw, long live the spirit of one of the greatest and influential musicians of our time, Clifford Lee Burton!!!!!
Ok I'm here because its obvious that I'm a Metallica Fan. I wanted to see a band I've never heard of cover a great song, Since they covered it in a style that I do not like, I don't like this cover because of his vocals. I actually think the instruments are really nice, very classic thrash overtone. Also I have the freedom to express my opinion. And so do you, I'm not trying to be a Dick and start an argument. Merely my opinion, and my opinion is beans to anyone else!!

I'm just saying you don't have the sound for it and that's not right. Don't mimic the dead and post it as recorded past without saying its a cover, that's just wrong!
lars is a horrible drummer, kirk uses too much 'wah', james likes to sing like elvis now & if cliff were still alive he would have left the band a long time ago. thats how that works.
mastodon is in fact a genre of its own.. mixing 80s thrash metal with mastodon is like a visualization of heaven and hell going ape shit on each other. thats how brutal this is
mastodon is a talened progressive metal band that probably was doing this in their sleep. metallica is a great metal band, but mastodon could of done a cover of dyers eve at least and do that no problem
I love the bass at the beginning kinda has that twisted evil sound to it. I give credit to other bands that can pull off playing a song from some other group and pull it off.
@EvilDudeoftheDead its legal to take someone elses song and change everything entirely as long as you have permission from the original artist or record label to cover the song. example, johnny cash's cover of nine inch nails' "hurt"
Why is everyone talking about "not enough bass, not heavy enough"? Get some better speakers! The bass is clearly audible, maybe even more so than in the original.
I think Mastodon should have covered a song with vocals. I think "The Thing That Should Not Be" would have sounded great with Sanders' vocals.
@slayerdeth420 I respectfully disagree. I think they still write masterpieces, just not in the same style as they did 25 years ago. They've branched out into new sounds and styles, which is the mark of true musicians.
@AJSaNdErS1993 All of these bands who recorded these songs are so horrible, except Mastodon, who is only above average. Metallica stopped trying to be good after Ride the Lightning. This is the worst song off of Master of Pillows, the incredibly boring album that it is.
@xxdanxexx Worst song on MOP? If anything this is the best song, mate.
Mastodon really play the riff well, but everything else is meh. I think they should have played another song - Leper Messiah or Disposable Heroes would have fitted them better.
@xxdanxexx dude, master of puppets and ride the lightning were the best metallica albums, period, in fact master of puppets was THE BEST metallica album, no flaws, amazingly written songs, brutal riffs, and a defining sound, MOP was definately their best work, not to mention this song, was the best piece of metal i have had the pleasure to hear, it kicks call of ktulu's ass.
@AJSaNdErS1993 Metallica was a great band and all, but they lacked talent in certain places. Mastodon on the other hand has great talent all around. Which is why I think they're a better band then Metallica.
@xBrutalB lars is a great drummer, kirk is one of the best guitarists of the 80's, and cliff was one of the best bassists ever... where exactly are/were they lacking talent?
man, i'm a huge metallica fan, but is evident that lars is a bad drummer, and kirk a bad guitar player. they used to be good, but today they are pretty bad.
Cliff was a fantastic bassist, Jason and Rob too (I think that rob is a great player, but not a bassist for a band like metallica, just check his work in Infectious Grooves)
@papafritaman Lars is still a good drummer. He's just not got nearly enough stamina anymore, plus he's made his kit so much smaller than it used to be. The first two songs I saw them play live, he was going crazy, but then started playing a little worse afterwards. I'd really like him to add shit back onto his kit, really. That'd help.
Now I still think Kirk is an amazing guitar player. He's not shit at all. Now 1989 Hammett blows 2011 out of the water, but he's not bad in any respect.
@ShdowSora a big kit does not mean better. example chuck biscuits, bill ward (before he decided to make it huge), brann dailor, dave grohl, dave abbruzzese.
@papafritaman Kirk's good, not great. Lars is okay, not really good. James is still great, Rob is great, Cliff was...well, I wonder sometimes what might have been. He had a really progressive edge to him that you can hear in Orion and other songs he wrote. He could've led a great progressive-metal band after Metallica, like Steve Harris did with Iron Maiden. Your English is great.
@gavquinn You're an asshole. You expect everyone to speak perfect English, even if it's not their native language? I'd like to see you post in perfect Portuguese. Besides, he made very good points.
@papafritaman I completely agree. Lars is a very simplistic drummer, never innovating, always using a very basic drumming technique. Kirk, especially in his early days, seems to fall into a rut where he uses the same tricks (the same shredding style). Just look at his work in Ride the Lightning, where half of the solos sound the same (though it's still an amazing album). Cliff was great, very creative, and James is amazing. I think their strongest aspect is their songwriting. Saludos de Arg.
@waterguyroks of course dude, I love Metallica, it's one of my 5 favourites bands in history, but for the songs.
Yngwie Malmsteen or other guy can shred and play the fastest in the world, but in the end, the most important thing is music it's the songs, not the virtuosism, and Metallica has the best songs in fucking world.
@papafritaman "Yngwie Malmsteen or other guy can shred and play the fastest in the world, but in the end, the most important thing is music it's the songs, not the virtuosism"
wow as amazing as mastodon are it shows that some songs realy are the reified essence of an individuals creativity, emotions, experiences, thoughts and cant be synthesized regardless of the similar traits the impersonator posse's. still love mastodon
What I also respect is the main reason why Mastodon took this song for them to cover is because they didn't want to murder the vocals on any of the other Metallica songs. I love Mastodon :)
I don't know if any of you listen to Mastodon at all, but if you did you would know two things. First is that everything you hear in this song is completely deliberate. Second is that if you were expecting a exact copy of Orion than you should not have even listened in. If you do in fact listen to Mastodon you may realize that they are plenty capable of being heavy as hell (see Leviathan). I think it is a great cover that shows respect to Metallica while owning the song themselves.
Not really a suitable song to do it on. Metallica is about heavy and tight rythms and this song would lose the heavyness if Brann would drum all over the place like we all love him for.
This was good to have Mastodon cover this for this album, they have that long winded, technical thing, sounds like it could almost be a Mastodon song.
Been a fan of both bands for a long time ... Long Live Metal \m/ !!!

@AJSaNdErS1993 All of these bands who recorded these songs are so horrible, except Mastodon, who is only above average. Metallica stopped trying to be good after Ride the Lightning. This is the worst song off of Master of Pillows, the incredibly boring album that it is.
xxdanxexx 4 months ago
@xxdanxexx Worst song on MOP? If anything this is the best song, mate.
Mastodon really play the riff well, but everything else is meh. I think they should have played another song - Leper Messiah or Disposable Heroes would have fitted them better.
6693BellRinger 4 months ago
@xxdanxexx dude, master of puppets and ride the lightning were the best metallica albums, period, in fact master of puppets was THE BEST metallica album, no flaws, amazingly written songs, brutal riffs, and a defining sound, MOP was definately their best work, not to mention this song, was the best piece of metal i have had the pleasure to hear, it kicks call of ktulu's ass.
Draceius 4 months ago
@Draceius IMO ...And Justice For All was their best followed closely by Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightening
HRNDONE 4 months ago
@Draceius Actually I'd argue that The Thing That Should Not Be was a flaw of that album.

@AJSaNdErS1993 Metallica was a great band and all, but they lacked talent in certain places. Mastodon on the other hand has great talent all around. Which is why I think they're a better band then Metallica.
xBrutalB 4 months ago
@xBrutalB lars is a great drummer, kirk is one of the best guitarists of the 80's, and cliff was one of the best bassists ever... where exactly are/were they lacking talent?
AMERICANjoo 4 months ago
@AMERICANjoo Lars is not a great drummer. He is probably the most overrated drummer ever. All of his drumming is so simplistic.
xBrutalB 4 months ago
@xBrutalB And not to mention the fact that Lars is just simply a douche!!!
pineal2012 4 months ago 7
@pineal2012 Yeah, that too.

@AMERICANjoo I'm a Metallica junkie, but dude, dont get too cocky LOL
handsinmypants91 4 months ago
@AMERICANjoo
man, i'm a huge metallica fan, but is evident that lars is a bad drummer, and kirk a bad guitar player. they used to be good, but today they are pretty bad.
Cliff was a fantastic bassist, Jason and Rob too (I think that rob is a great player, but not a bassist for a band like metallica, just check his work in Infectious Grooves)
For me, James is the soul of Metallica.
sorry for the shitty english, im from argentina

@papafritaman Lars is still a good drummer. He's just not got nearly enough stamina anymore, plus he's made his kit so much smaller than it used to be. The first two songs I saw them play live, he was going crazy, but then started playing a little worse afterwards. I'd really like him to add shit back onto his kit, really. That'd help.
Now I still think Kirk is an amazing guitar player. He's not shit at all. Now 1989 Hammett blows 2011 out of the water, but he's not bad in any respect.
ShdowSora 3 months ago
@ShdowSora a big kit does not mean better. example chuck biscuits, bill ward (before he decided to make it huge), brann dailor, dave grohl, dave abbruzzese.
SludgePunkGrunge 2 months ago 2
@papafritaman Well I wouldn't say Kirk is BAD, he's just not as good as a lot of other guitarists.
parkouraliberte 3 months ago
@papafritaman no es que lars sea malo, pero frente a Dailor es difícil ser mejor

@papafritaman don't worry, dude. your english is clear enough.
I totally agree, Kirk's too clumsy.
RIP Cliff Burton

@ness7281992 I'll bet you can't play better.

Besides, he made very good points.
waterguyroks 2 months ago
@papafritaman I completely agree. Lars is a very simplistic drummer, never innovating, always using a very basic drumming technique. Kirk, especially in his early days, seems to fall into a rut where he uses the same tricks (the same shredding style). Just look at his work in Ride the Lightning, where half of the solos sound the same (though it's still an amazing album). Cliff was great, very creative, and James is amazing. I think their strongest aspect is their songwriting. Saludos de Arg.
waterguyroks 2 months ago 2
@waterguyroks of course dude, I love Metallica, it's one of my 5 favourites bands in history, but for the songs.
Yngwie Malmsteen or other guy can shred and play the fastest in the world, but in the end, the most important thing is music it's the songs, not the virtuosism, and Metallica has the best songs in fucking world.

wow as amazing as mastodon are it shows that some songs realy are the reified essence of an individuals creativity, emotions, experiences, thoughts and cant be synthesized regardless of the similar traits the impersonator posse's. still love mastodon

What I also respect is the main reason why Mastodon took this song for them to cover is because they didn't want to murder the vocals on any of the other Metallica songs. I love Mastodon :)
Tviruskillu 6 months ago
I don't know if any of you listen to Mastodon at all, but if you did you would know two things. First is that everything you hear in this song is completely deliberate. Second is that if you were expecting a exact copy of Orion than you should not have even listened in. If you do in fact listen to Mastodon you may realize that they are plenty capable of being heavy as hell (see Leviathan). I think it is a great cover that shows respect to Metallica while owning the song themselves.

Dissapointed, this is a great cover but Brann isnt shredding
deftones720 6 months ago
@deftones720
Not really a suitable song to do it on. Metallica is about heavy and tight rythms and this song would lose the heavyness if Brann would drum all over the place like we all love him for.
Clike666ness 6 months ago
@Clike666ness very true

This was good to have Mastodon cover this for this album, they have that long winded, technical thing, sounds like it could almost be a Mastodon song.
