  • Been a fan of both bands for a long time ... Long Live Metal \m/ !!!

  • HOWEVER lol i prefer Metallica's first 3 "big albums" and i like Jason better than Rob. Jason had the "fire" even when the others were becoming burnt out.

  • As Jason Newsted said many years ago when asked if Metallica "sold out" he said "yes, we sell out everywhere we go.". Metallica didnt sell out they grew up. I'm 39yo i used to think that they did but i grew up too and understand it more.

  • @ClikeWorks True, however on this song specifically the bass is a very important part, because Cliff Burton (if i remember correctly) wrote the majority of the song. This song is absolutely nothing without the bass or the break down.

  • I dont care what anyone says, without Metallica there wouldnt be a lot of bands that sound the way they do, maybe it would be worse, maybe better, but what we do have now is timeless classics... why would metalheads fight over dumb shit, unite mother fuckers!!!

  • mastodon is better funny how peole think lil fag cover bands are better

  • No disrespect to Mastodon but they pretty much killed this song, much like A7X killed paranoid. Stop mixing out the bass its THE most important part in this song

  • @wykydrone

You are complaining about mixing out the bass... On a Metallica cover... Metalica... Who are known for mixing it out to almost non existence.

  • Every video that has anything to do with metallica has comments from jealous people that have to let everyone know how overrated they are...grow up, when your band is selling out madison square garden, I'll listen to your opinion.

  • best bestova svih vremena

  • if metallica never existed, maybe all these bands never existed too... so stop fucking around

    long live the kings...

  • why does everybody hate lars? the drummer of mastodon is like lars from the 80s. he came up with really tight progressive beats. why are people so fucking stupid?

  • @DDevilized for real I'm sure he wanted to go the fuck off like he usually does, but then it wouldn't have been a cover anymore. lol.

  • Probably the best cover off that Tribute Album.

  • Why does Metallica come to mind when I saw the thumbnail?

  • @TronixGuy93 Because this is a Metallica cover?

  • Can any of you play a different/better drum track to this song than Lars?

  • Not the same without cliff :/

  • poor lars

  • Lars > Brann

  • @MlKEPORNTOY stop trolling, lol.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY haha nice try at trolling.

  • metallica didnt just write music. they made epic masterpieces... and they are amazing. i am not a huge fan past the black album but come on, these guys are legendary and are the best metal band of their time...without doubt. and as far as lars being a douche he has every right. i am a musician and if being a musician is the only thing you do for money and have no other way to support yourself and you dream and talent then i would be pissed if people ripped my shit off...

  • this is acually a pretty good cover...not bad

  • Not a big fan of this cover. I love Metallica, I like Mastodon, but this cover just feels wrong to me. It seems almost like the guitars are out of tune. It's a shame 'cause this is one of my favorite Metallica songs.

  • Wait people seriously think Kirk is a bad guitar player? Wow.

  • @StreetSoldier88 I don't think it, I know it.

  • @Formutha You don't know shit, you're clearly half retarded.

  • @StreetSoldier88 Now there is no need to start going off and calling people names and shit for people thinking differently. I personally don't think Kirk is that good. I mean really, if I fucked with a wah pedal and a few major scales I could be just as good. Too bad I'm about to sell my wah pedal, I could be in Metallica. LOL

  • @Formutha Are you a fan of Dave Mustaine?

  • @StreetSoldier88 No, not really. If I were to choose any thrashers it would be the dudes from Exodus. Hands down!

  • Why does everyone just rag on Metallica endlessly, or on a couple of members?? It's so stupid and trite at this stage. If you like Metallica, and I guess you do just shut up and enjoy what they've given you. They've given me so much influence since I was a kid, why should I just shite on with useless drivel about them.

  • I can't hate on Lars even though he comes across as a total douchebag. To be apart of one of the best albums ever created speaks for itself.

  • lol, mastodon could of covered metallica's hardest song and made it better. they were really bored when they played this

  • @GetFuckingAngry They seem like it. You can definitely tell they're bored when everything feels flat and lifeless (although technically sound).

  • Along with Primus' cover of The thing shat should not be, this is the best metallica cover ever.

  • how bored Brann must have been while recording this

  • @DDevilized Technically he´s not playing to his limits, thats for sure. But if you asked him, he´d tell you that he was super happy to be part of his project and it´s an honour for him to play that song. You know, it´s not all about who´s the better player, it´s about musicianship. And on that point, Lars can kick almost anyone´s ass! although this song was mainly written by Cliff, but still... ;-)

  • @hetfield4president lars couldnt fight his way out of a paper bag, let alone win a drum off.

  • @DDevilized then why the fuck did he make a cover

  • I like how this distinctly sounds like Mastodon is playing it. For the first minute and a half, I kept expecting to hear the vocals from 'colony of birchmen'

  • Bass solo was straight wrecked. I don't care if he wasn't trying to play the exact same thing which he obviously wasn't, but it was still played like shit.

  • wooooow!

  • Idk why everyone has to get on these boards and do nothing but bitch! I'm a Metallica Freak, and I find this to be right up there in the best covers I've heard. So quit your bitching, people, and just enjoy the fucking song! Oh, and btw, long live the spirit of one of the greatest and influential musicians of our time, Clifford Lee Burton!!!!!

  • Understand this as an hommage. It's f***in' great.

Said by a Metallica maniac, also Mastodon freak!!!

  • Good cover.

  • Sounds kinda like Orion but all fucked up!!!

  • The version of Metallica is the best..

  • 240p we meet again...

  • i like the way they respected the original theme, putting some of them, now THATS a good cover.

  • I wish they'd made is sound more like mastodon.

  • Will u shut up

  • @11guitarrock ya you tell the comment board whos boss.

  • @MrYogo67 fuck you

  • Ok I'm here because its obvious that I'm a Metallica Fan. I wanted to see a band I've never heard of cover a great song, Since they covered it in a style that I do not like, I don't like this cover because of his vocals. I actually think the instruments are really nice, very classic thrash overtone. Also I have the freedom to express my opinion. And so do you, I'm not trying to be a Dick and start an argument. Merely my opinion, and my opinion is beans to anyone else!!

  • @MrYogo67 LOL at the comment you recieved.... next time just keep ur hands away from the keyboard b4 13itchen about other things.... im also a Metallica Fan but i dont go everywhere preaching like a dam priest about it.

  • @MrYogo67 Seriously? You're a pretentious idiot.

  • @UnderwhelmingPlywood Fuck you asshole

  • @MrYogo67 What happened to the extensive, unnecessary sentences? Seriously, look back at your comment and tell me it doesn't sound imbecilic.

  • NOTHING compares lars drums...

  • @123456789000jjjllloo Yeah because nobody is as boring as him. Brann fucking rapes Lars.

  • @UnderwhelmingPlywood Lars is better. Sorry

  • @123456789000jjjllloo Yeah, whatever Metallica fanboy. Have fun listening to your band who stopped being good after Burton died.

  • @UnderwhelmingPlywood Its.... Different But still Good. Robert does A Good Job :)

  • @123456789000jjjllloo True. I used to be big on Metallica, but after a while I realized how far downhill they were going and I found other bands. Who knows? Maybe their next album will be awesome.

  • @123456789000jjjllloo Lars IS better.... AT SUCKING.

  • @123456789000jjjllloo lars is no where near a better drummer.

  • @SludgePunkGrunge Lars Ulrich is not even a drummer.

  • @DaFeind03 You, my friend, need to get realistic. This is a tribute, they weren't mimicking Metallica, they were honoring them.

  • As much as I like Mastodon, what's the point of covering an instrumental song if you hardly change anything?

  • @SKShadows I'm 30 seconds into the song and already notice differences, plus it's off of a tribute album, why would they drastically change the song?

  • @Kragmire I rescind my earlier comment. I didn't realize this was off a MoP tribute until just now. Yes it makes sense to cover it in that context.

  • very good, considering that Burton's bass skills just cannot ever be matched by mortal hands.

  • @MetalupasS666 yea, you wish.

  • @MetalupasS666 Cliff Burton wasn't all that special, really...

  • @SpeedyGreen seriously ive never heard anybody make a bass sound like a fucking lead before dude he was amazing for years i thought the intro to creeping death was lead guitar i respect ya opinion but he was very special and a tragic loss to metal

  • @SpeedyGreen hey to each his own but you have to admit he definitely had his own style.

  • And x@brutalD... id like you to post a video of you playing the drums since you want to talk shit about one of the top 20 drummers in the world you piece of shit know it all coffee shop ass hole!

  • Why try to re-create the imortal when you can play it any time you want in real life, you didn't even post that this is a cover.... you did not do Cliff right for real, not saying it wasn't the right notes.... I'm just saying you don't have the sound for it and that's not right. Don't mimic the dead and post it as recorded past without saying its a cover, that's just wrong!

  • THIS IS LIKE SPACE GOING TO HELL... fuckin awesome

  • Not bad but, I think it sounds like Karaoke.

  • @AMERICANjoo

lars is a horrible drummer, kirk uses too much 'wah', james likes to sing like elvis now & if cliff were still alive he would have left the band a long time ago. thats how that works.

  • mastodon is in fact a genre of its own.. mixing 80s thrash metal with mastodon is like a visualization of heaven and hell going ape shit on each other. thats how brutal this is

  • Haha the bass intro ended like 15 seconds early. :/ thats my favorite part. especially when Cliff did it.

  • Don't compare Mastodon and Metallica, please.

    Metallica = Thrash Metal

    Mastodon = Progressive Metal

  • @BoratNo1

Mastodon = Stoner Mastodon. Not Stoner Metal. Stoner Mastodon.

  • more epic than space itself

  • Great cover but not as EPIC as the original.

  • "Okay Brann now the drums come in"

    Brann: "What drums?"

  • mastodon is a talened progressive metal band that probably was doing this in their sleep. metallica is a great metal band, but mastodon could of done a cover of dyers eve at least and do that no problem

  • Compared to your average Mastodon song... they must've all been pretty bored!

  • Best cover of Orion.

  • CLIFF BE WITH YOU ALL

  • R.I.P CLIFF

  • a tear start to run in face 3:57 i love that part TT_TT

  • this song how metallica played live in korea O.o te tunning are the same D:

  • @crowsteel686 actually this is in D, the way they played in Korea was a half step down from E. but this is still kickass. R.I.P. Clifford Burton

  • @Zackary1005 is that why they did a cover of one of their songs?

  • at 2:00 you don't feel the power in this cover of the song. Metallica's version put the emphasis where it needed to be.

  • machine head was ehh, chimaira did a good job, bullet was just no. u dont fuck with welcome home

  • G\

  • Mastodon, machine head, bullet for my valentine, and chimaira did the best covers on the album. although triviums sucked

  • @pivetlord13 how did trivium's suck?

  • Bass was way too flabby and low in the mix. Cliff would not be pleased.

  • @Motorheadbanger93

Unfortunately nobody can get his sound so it's not there fault lol

  • I love the bass at the beginning kinda has that twisted evil sound to it. I give credit to other bands that can pull off playing a song from some other group and pull it off.

  • @Zackary1005 is that why they made a cover of one of their songs? dumbass

  • By having the bass turned down it forces you to listen and then get entranced by the song.

  • Brann must have been REALLY bored while recording this song....

  • @Serg13majik Probably not.

  • @Serg13majik I can imagine he was daydreaming of beating Lars with a drumstick the whole time lol.

  • @Serg13majik he's playing like Lars, what do you expect?

  • Troy is okay but Cliff is a legend R.I.P.

  • C'mon Brenn, you're not Lars (AKA "the worst drummer in history") , you can do better than that ^^

  • @ElMarkyMix They can't change anything or it's considered making a derivitive work, and then they'd get sued.

  • @EvilDudeoftheDead actually you can, bands do it constantly. its called making an adaptation of a song. perfectly legal

  • @hamcheesecola Making an adaptation is legal, yes, but he's suggesting replacing the entire drum part of the song, which is not as legal.

  • @EvilDudeoftheDead its legal to take someone elses song and change everything entirely as long as you have permission from the original artist or record label to cover the song. example, johnny cash's cover of nine inch nails' "hurt"

  • @blouchj He actually played the song, he just didn't use all the elements. The guitar part is there, it's just distorted to an inch of it's life.

  • Why is everyone talking about "not enough bass, not heavy enough"? Get some better speakers! The bass is clearly audible, maybe even more so than in the original.

I think Mastodon should have covered a song with vocals. I think "The Thing That Should Not Be" would have sounded great with Sanders' vocals.

  • @fredmachine Would have beaten mendeeds cover

  • Que merda de cover... Shity!

  • Where's the bass <_<

  • the metallica that wrote master peices like this is looooong gone:(

  • @slayerdeth420 I respectfully disagree. I think they still write masterpieces, just not in the same style as they did 25 years ago. They've branched out into new sounds and styles, which is the mark of true musicians.

  • All these covered songs are great, but honestly, NOTHING compares to Metallica.

  • @AJSaNdErS1993 All of these bands who recorded these songs are so horrible, except Mastodon, who is only above average. Metallica stopped trying to be good after Ride the Lightning. This is the worst song off of Master of Pillows, the incredibly boring album that it is.

  • @xxdanxexx Worst song on MOP? If anything this is the best song, mate.

Mastodon really play the riff well, but everything else is meh. I think they should have played another song - Leper Messiah or Disposable Heroes would have fitted them better.

  • @xxdanxexx dude, master of puppets and ride the lightning were the best metallica albums, period, in fact master of puppets was THE BEST metallica album, no flaws, amazingly written songs, brutal riffs, and a defining sound, MOP was definately their best work, not to mention this song, was the best piece of metal i have had the pleasure to hear, it kicks call of ktulu's ass.

  • @Draceius IMO ...And Justice For All was their best followed closely by Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightening

  • @Draceius Actually I'd argue that The Thing That Should Not Be was a flaw of that album.

  • @AJSaNdErS1993 Metallica was a great band and all, but they lacked talent in certain places. Mastodon on the other hand has great talent all around. Which is why I think they're a better band then Metallica.

  • @xBrutalB lars is a great drummer, kirk is one of the best guitarists of the 80's, and cliff was one of the best bassists ever... where exactly are/were they lacking talent?

  • @AMERICANjoo Lars is not a great drummer. He is probably the most overrated drummer ever. All of his drumming is so simplistic.

  • @xBrutalB And not to mention the fact that Lars is just simply a douche!!!

  • @pineal2012 Yeah, that too.

  • @AMERICANjoo I'm a Metallica junkie, but dude, dont get too cocky LOL

  • @AMERICANjoo

man, i'm a huge metallica fan, but is evident that lars is a bad drummer, and kirk a bad guitar player. they used to be good, but today they are pretty bad.

Cliff was a fantastic bassist, Jason and Rob too (I think that rob is a great player, but not a bassist for a band like metallica, just check his work in Infectious Grooves)

For me, James is the soul of Metallica.

sorry for the shitty english, im from argentina

  • @papafritaman What shitty English? You were perfectly understandable.

  • @papafritaman You speak better English than most people from America.

  • @papafritaman you nailed it perfectly.

  • @papafritaman Lars is still a good drummer. He's just not got nearly enough stamina anymore, plus he's made his kit so much smaller than it used to be. The first two songs I saw them play live, he was going crazy, but then started playing a little worse afterwards. I'd really like him to add shit back onto his kit, really. That'd help.

Now I still think Kirk is an amazing guitar player. He's not shit at all. Now 1989 Hammett blows 2011 out of the water, but he's not bad in any respect.

  • @ShdowSora a big kit does not mean better. example chuck biscuits, bill ward (before he decided to make it huge), brann dailor, dave grohl, dave abbruzzese.

  • @papafritaman Well I wouldn't say Kirk is BAD, he's just not as good as a lot of other guitarists.

  • @papafritaman no es que lars sea malo, pero frente a Dailor es difícil ser mejor

  • @papafritaman don't worry, dude. your english is clear enough.

I totally agree, Kirk's too clumsy.

    RIP Cliff Burton

  • @ness7281992 I'll bet you can't play better.

  • @papafritaman Kirk's good, not great. Lars is okay, not really good. James is still great, Rob is great, Cliff was...well, I wonder sometimes what might have been. He had a really progressive edge to him that you can hear in Orion and other songs he wrote. He could've led a great progressive-metal band after Metallica, like Steve Harris did with Iron Maiden. Your English is great.

  • @papafritaman your english isnt bad at all man, very good actually lol. and i totally get what your saying man.

  • @papafritaman

    i agree

  • @papafritaman Kirk is great don't deny it

  • @papafritaman This comment has no merit, sorry. Google tranlate if you're left short of anything.

  • @gavquinn You're an asshole. You expect everyone to speak perfect English, even if it's not their native language? I'd like to see you post in perfect Portuguese. Besides, he made very good points.

  • @papafritaman I completely agree. Lars is a very simplistic drummer, never innovating, always using a very basic drumming technique. Kirk, especially in his early days, seems to fall into a rut where he uses the same tricks (the same shredding style). Just look at his work in Ride the Lightning, where half of the solos sound the same (though it's still an amazing album). Cliff was great, very creative, and James is amazing. I think their strongest aspect is their songwriting. Saludos de Arg.

  • @waterguyroks of course dude, I love Metallica, it's one of my 5 favourites bands in history, but for the songs.

Yngwie Malmsteen or other guy can shred and play the fastest in the world, but in the end, the most important thing is music it's the songs, not the virtuosism, and Metallica has the best songs in fucking world.

  • @papafritaman "Yngwie Malmsteen or other guy can shred and play the fastest in the world, but in the end, the most important thing is music it's the songs, not the virtuosism"

    AGREEEEEEEEEEEE

  • @papafritaman James is Metallica, he's the reason i love Metallica, he's such a great singer

  • @papafritaman I have to agree with you in something...Metallica is James basically.

  • This is the Mastodon's interpretation so stop talking about shit and enjoy this really awesome cover.

  • great cover... that dudes definitely not cliff though..

  • wow as amazing as mastodon are it shows that some songs realy are the reified essence of an individuals creativity, emotions, experiences, thoughts and cant be synthesized regardless of the similar traits the impersonator posse's. still love mastodon

  • This version is better than the dream theater's cover

  • Lmao this ain't garbage. I like it. Just not the bass solo after the 2nd guitar solo. Troy ruined it. But otherwise great fucking cover.

  • So this is what Orion sounds like with good drummer!

  • @TheGardenNoam dude he is playing the same beats as the orginal.

  • @10Bozotheclown LOL @ You! This does not lack anything, and actually drips with Finesse and Style. ...Furthermore your Mom's a mom!

  • What I also respect is the main reason why Mastodon took this song for them to cover is because they didn't want to murder the vocals on any of the other Metallica songs. I love Mastodon :)

  • I don't know if any of you listen to Mastodon at all, but if you did you would know two things. First is that everything you hear in this song is completely deliberate. Second is that if you were expecting a exact copy of Orion than you should not have even listened in. If you do in fact listen to Mastodon you may realize that they are plenty capable of being heavy as hell (see Leviathan). I think it is a great cover that shows respect to Metallica while owning the song themselves.

  • Dissapointed, this is a great cover but Brann isnt shredding

  • @deftones720

Not really a suitable song to do it on. Metallica is about heavy and tight rythms and this song would lose the heavyness if Brann would drum all over the place like we all love him for.

  • @Clike666ness very true

  • This was good to have Mastodon cover this for this album, they have that long winded, technical thing, sounds like it could almost be a Mastodon song.

  • WHAT A SHIT!!! dont comes even close the original !!! R.I.P CLIFF...
