@Sodoffanddie MacGowan has clearly identified himself as Irish judging by the various lyrics in a number of his songs and interviews I've seen with him, and he obviously brings a lot of Irish tradition and literature to his music. Now, having said that, the other half of the Pogues is the punk scene that the whole band clearly took from the movement burgeoning in England at the time. That synthesis is probably what makes the band so brilliant.

@hanshotfirst1138 Agree with you Hanshot although the other three founding members are English. Just find it annoying when The Pogues are referred to as a being solely an Irish band. They are a mostly English band (with an Irish singer) playing Irish & English influenced music. Bit pedantic I know but it's the truth.

@peacefrog1916 Well, he was born in Kent, but spent the majority of his youth in Ireland, and judging by his song lyrics, various interviews I've seen, and his feelings on the IRA and his lifting of Irish literature and culture in his songs, etc. he probably largely identifies himself as Irish, at least largely. In any case, his toothless, slurred speech sometimes makes it difficult to discern exactly what kind of accent he has. Genius regardless. Lets not put genius in a box.
