@jmpyle1 thanks for the response! I am still a bourbon noob, but thanks to our reviews I now have a nice little collection. Woodford reserve, Elijah Craig 12, Buffalo Trace, Basil Hayden, Russels Reserve, Rittenhouse Rye, and Makers Mark. Enjoying them all at night, and neat...great way to end the day. Never liked scotch or whiskey much before now, my recent discovery of bourbon has been very eye opening for me! Keep up the good work.
@jmpyle1 what do you think accounts for the striking color difference between this and say, the Bakers 7 year. One would think - longer in the barrel the darker the color? Is this due to amount of barrel char, or is the Basil Hayden's diluted to get the lower proof?
@terrapin72 You nailed it with the last one. Bakers is 107. Basil Hayden is 80 proof. That's more than 1/4 more concentration. That is the biggest reason for the color difference. Also where the whiskey is aged can effect it. At the heart and lower levels of the warehouses the amount of interaction with the char is less so than the more volatile temperature variations of the extreme portions of the warehouse.
@moviemaniac180 Hi cousins! My grandfather is Spencer I. Hayden! Not sure how far back I have to go but, he informed me that we are indeed related to Basil. It definitely is a small world!
@OffBeatCadence Hey cousin! nice singing videos Btw,ya gotta good voice there! anyways my great great grandma was a Hayden. if you trace the hayden family far back enough there is one ancestor Simon de Heydon who was knighted by Richard the Lionheart he was King of England in the 1100s! neat huh lol
I'm seriously not lying. It's just too bad I'm only 19 and not of drinking age to try it myself. I seriously hope ZUN hasn't ignored this brew from my Old Great Grandad (lol pun)
@ShouAmaterasu No shit really?? Basil Hayden is my 6th great grandfather!! haha small world right lol
anyways it was not until just last month i found out about this Bourbon being named for him. im 21 so ill have to get me a bottle and take a few shots in honor of old Great grandpa
I tried the Basil Hayden chilled and it reminded me of a deluxe George Dickel and was not to impressed. I left the bottle out and it warmed up and got a chance to breathe. On the last shot I drank it warm and it was a whole different animal that I loved, but alas it was the last shot and I have never had a chance to drink it again. My recommendation is drink it warm with no water added, the corn sweetness comes through, not the rye.
8.4. Ouch. Honestly, I haven't seen any great reviews of this product so I have steered clear because of the high price tag. Great bottle design though.
@falcon048 Well, my rating scale for 8.4 is "very good/excellent". It's good whiskey. A little over priced, but for someone looking for light bodied and not too sweet, it's a good one.
you're a heathen! why arent you having it with coke?
