  • I predict Maddux will become the first player to have his hat split in half.

Or Coop will make up for the Dawson slight because the Expos had a horrible time trying to get Hall of Famers.

Maddux was the greatest baseball player of this era.

  • LOOK UP PERRINE BASEBALL ADRIEN#24

  • Go Atlanta braves

  • Maddox had a chance to sign with the Yanks but he was a little leary of the wear that an American League East summer could do to his health and legacy. The chicken choose the senior circuit and a nice little retirement deal in Atlanta; what a coward.

  • i'll be curious to see what his vote percentage will be for the hall. entry on the first ballot is obvious, but seeing a handful of clowns voting no on cal ripken and tony gwynn a couple years ago reminded us that there are silly politics going on up there. whoever votes no on greg, and there will be a few who do, would be very hard pressed to justify it. he was as good as they make 'em, in every way.

  • i got tix to the braves vs. cubs game on april 8th in atlanta. i hope it's maddux vs. tim hudson or tom glavine!

  • went to his last start ever at wrigley field in 2008, i specificly got seats behind the Padres bullpen to watch him warm up, got a standing ovation when he left the mound. glad he is back with the cubs organization

  • Greg is back as a Cub.

  • maddux will always be a brave, buddy. he was filthy in atlanta and loved pitching with smoltz and glavine. the braves in the 90's had some of the best pitching staffs of all time, ad maddux was a huge part of that. the cubs blow and will never win a world series. they should just move cities or just permanently end the franchise and only have the sox in Chicago. fuck the cubs

  • The Cubs have won the World Series before, bud.

And I didn't create the video to get into a debate about which team Maddux belonged to. Everyone knows he's going to the Hall as a Brave. Doesn't mean he wasn't/isn't adored by Cubs fans.

  • I was at Wrigley for the last game he pitched as a Cub. It was against the Cardinals and he got the win. When he was comming out of the game he got a huge standing ovation. We all knew that it was probably his final game as a Cub. I am proud that us Cub fans showed him the appreciation that he deserved. I am still pissed off that the Cubs let him go. I have alot of respect for him. I think other players should model themselves after Mad Dog the way he carried himself. A true proffesional!

  • Still remember that. My neighbor was there. I was seriously jealous. There's a picture at 1:38 in the video of Maddux walking off in that final game.

  • I have never said anything to the effect that his Cubs time was more significant than his Braves time. I have said that I would personally be offended if he went in the Hall as a Cub and I am a huge Cub fan and Greg Maddux was my all time favorite Cub. He is a BRAVE before anything else but since you don't live in Chicago I guess you don't understand the impact he had here. He was a clubhouse leader and a fan favorite here too, and he had a significant Cubs career maybe not as significant

  • Greg Maddux Is An Chicago Cubs

    Forever #31

  • Adios Maestro.

Crecí viendote jugar, mi más grande ídolo deportivo.

El mejor pitcher de la historia...

  • Great video. Greg Maddux is my favorite baseball player of all time. I'm a Dodger fan and it was an honor and a privilege to see him pitch for our team for parts of 2 seasons. I enjoyed watching him durring his entire career. Whether it was with the Cubs, Braves, Dodgers or the Padres. Thanks for all the memories Greg. There will never be another one like you

  • if he had a choice he'd go in the HOF as a cub.. His heart always and still does belong to the Cubs

  • Naw, he will produly go in as a Brave

  • Bullshit. he`ll enter as a padre.

    go jays

  • lol yeah the 3 seasons he spent there really meant a lot to him.

    /sarcasm

  • He spent 8 seasons in a Cubs uniform .

  • No doubt greg maddux became real un hittable in the mid 90's with the braves. but in 92 with the cubs he won a cy young award and he was becoming the greg maddux that led him all the way to the 95 world series. Don't the braves have like 13 consecutive division titles or something? Lets put that in perspective! winning 13 games in a row is good but 13 seasons on top of your division. With most of the time one of the best records in baseball. im not a braves fan but igreg was the man, cubs or no

  • @DCProductions77 14 i believe

  • is he dead or has he left the team?

  • lol, No, he isn't dead. He came up on the Cubs, left for free agency and returned in the twilight of his career to try to get the Cubs over the hump. He then left again and is now retired. His number was recently retired and hangs on one of the foul poles at Wrigley.

  • it wasn't fun that he left the team.

  • No offense.....Maddux will go in as a Braves in the HOF. Cubs fan he did have 5 of his first 6 years were good, his run in Atlanta was the greatest in modern day history. Can't wait til July 17, 2009, Braves HOF luncheon and induction ceremony, plus the first of the BIG THREE to have his number retired. Cubs retired his number to make up for him leaving in 1992, after taking him for granted.

  • I have no doubt that he will go into the HOF as a Brave and personally I would be offended if he didn't.I will agree with you his run in Atlanta was the greatest in modern baseball history. I do think though that perhaps Atlanta should wait for the entire Big Three to retire so they can do all three numbers at once. And the Cubs are not simply retiring 31 for letting him walk in 92, he was a clubhouse leader and a gracious sportsman whom the Chicago fans loved just as the Atlanta fans did

  • I would agree on all aspect your point. I would love to see the BIG THREE numbers retired together.

  • i used to call him picasso because nobody painted the corners of the plate like he did.

  • the greatest EVER. Can't wait for May 3

  • why whats on May 3rd?

  • Greatest Brave of all time.

  • he is in my opinion the best all around pitcher in the game. i have looked up to him and his style since i was 4 years old. many of the guys i played with, we idolized him. i even taught myself his delivery as a pitcher and kept that through high school. the guy was a master at pitching, i never missed a game he started. i grew up watching the braves too, and it was sad when he left them. but it was a worse day when he announced his retirement.. baseball has lost a great player..

  • Number 31 is retired on honor of two of the best pitchers in Cubs history. I can't wait to go to the ceremony

  • In my lifetime there have surely been many, many great pitchers...Clements...Gibson, Ryan, Carlton, Koufax, ,Zambrano..I could go on and on... But how many 300 plus game winners are out there who can't even break 90 mph. The man is THE BEST.

  • Madduz is forever a BRAVE thrugh and thrugh

  • ...sorry, I meant 'Cubfan531'...

  • Cubfan351,

His 92 season was phenomenal. Had the Cubs, who were 78-84 that season, been a top team, his W-L record would have been astonishing. 1992 was arguably Maddux's third best year. Do you know where I can obtain game tapes (not highlight packages) of some of his starts that year?

  • Maddux will always be a brave to me. I grew watching him. My favorite baseball player now and forever!

  • Greg Muddux is an ATLANTA BRAVE.

  • Comment removed

  • I am not doubting that he was an integral and storied member of Atlanta but his time with the Cubs was just as significant. Maybe he didn't have his best years as a Cubs but he was able to capture the hearts of the fans with the same sportsmanship he did in Atlanta. Mad Dog is a class act why can't you be? Can the Cubs fans not like him for the same reasons you do?

  • you have to be on crack to think his time with the cubs was just as significant as with the braves... He won 3 cy youngs and a world series with us... he has never even seen the cubs win a championship let alone be an integral part of one like he was with the braves

  • 4 Cy Youngs*

  • Greg Maddux Say He Love Chicago Cubs Than Padre And Dogders.

  • One of the greatest pitchers of all time

  • I knew this time was coming but wish I had more chances to see him pitch! Baseball will miss you Maddux

  • i seriously wanna cry!

i wish ted never sold us!

why couldn't he retire with us like glavine did?

  • Maddux retires on Monday.

  • As much as Maddux has meant to Cubs fans, I'm glad that he'll be wearing a Braves cap in the Hall. Maddux anchored the Braves of the 1990's and no Braves fan will ever forget the untouchable trio with Maddux as its ace.

  • Gregg Maddux= Greatest Pitcher of this past decade. Drug free, tough as nails, and a mercenary. Relied of precision pitches, Pin Point Accuracy, and Prooved that an old dogg can learn new tricks. Any one Remember that wicked curveball he was using after the 2002 season? Truly the best pitcher for the past 20 years. Please Maddux dont retire. but I respect your decision! I will cherish all your jerseys and the autograph I got from you back in 05. Truly the most professional and model player ever!

  • Best Pitcher of My Generation.......Roidger Clemens doesnt even come close to The Professor.

  • Greg Maddux is my half uncle well i call him my uncle and his brother Mike Maddux the pitching coach for the Brewers my uncle because my dad grew up with them and is still good friends with them!

  • Comment removed

  • @Jbrosrock77, how is he your uncle? You do know that he is only your uncle if he is your dad or mother's brother.

  • i don't see the big deal in signing greg maddux

we have more than capable guys such as hong chih kuo and chan ho park

  • goodbye greg maddux have fun being a dodger no really he's a dodger now he got traded 2 days ago because adresd are sucking

  • Simply.. The Best!

  • good song got to love greg maddux he is the best at what he does on the mound he is a true pitcher

  • Growing up in Atlanta, it was an absolute treat to watch Maddux pitch in his prime time.

  • Dog has been as literal master, and he has done so by changing speeds, locations, rather than with his fastball.

And, unlike others I shall not name, Dog's fastball did not seem to get fast when he turned 38, 39, 40, etc. Maybe that is because Dog took no dope, while others did (I shall not name names, the Mitchell Report does that I and let Mitchell be sued by lunatics rather than me).

Dog (and also Glavine and Smoltz) is going to be missed, but it has been "a great ride."

  • wish the Braves still had him...

  • i totally agree and best picture of all time.

  • Not only that, but Maddux pitched in the National League, that means he had to be an actual baseball player. Maddux could handle the bat, PLUS he has the MOST GOLD GLOVES EVER. Why does everyone forget about that?

I feel bad for the Cubbies, I really do, the funny thing is, in 1997, he through a complete game shutout against them and only through 77 pitches. That's SEVENTY-SEVEN pitches. To me, that's way more impressive than 20 strikeouts.

  • You're right. Maddux never cared about blowing it by guys. He relied on weak contact. 77 pitch complete game is insane.

  • To me it's more impressive than a 20 strikeout game, several people have struck out 20, it's still impressive, but I don't think anyone has come close to doing what Maddux did.

  • didnt a rockie pitcher do it in 72 innings...in colorado...last year?

  • pitches lol not innings doh

  • I doubt it, not to say it didn't happen, if so, good for him. But Maddux did stuff like that constantly.

  • Aaron Cook threw a 75 pitch complete game for Colorado last year. Against San Diego, July 25th. ESPN has every game since 2002 cataloged online.

Clint Hurdle's comment - "I don't think I've ever seen a pitcher throw seven frames of single-digit pitches. He was filthy"

Maddux is still the best though.

  • that's amazing, it's too bad it wasn't as highly praised as it should have been. To me that's so much more impressive than striking out like 17 guys.

It's one thing to be blessed with a rocket arm and blow 97 by guys for 9 innings, it's another to not be blessed, but just be incredibly smart and talented, and outsmart hitters and pitch to your defense for 9 innings.

  • We had Smoltz to blow past the hitter with the 97mph heat. Maddux was truly the Professor. We love Glavine and Smoltz just as equal as Maddux though.

  • Smoltz blew 97 mph heaters past batters... but Maddux blew em away with 87mph fastballs.

  • Let's not argue now. Maddux, Smoltz, and Glavine were all part of something special that we all can hopefully relay to our grandkids one day!

This Red Sox fan loved that trio, and wonders if the other two will not be far behind! Maddux is a sure fire 1st ballot HOF'er!!! Here's to his career with the Braves and Cubbies, and all the memories... And yes, the Dodgers and Padres too...

  • Agreed. Probably the best pitching trio ever.

And, in an era where everyone tries to throw as hard as they can, with no regards to control or secondary pitches, it was really nice to see the Mad Dog go out there and do what he did for so many years. We'll miss you, Greg Maddux.

  • Maddux is my all time favorite baseball player. I love how he paints corners and works with movement and somehow is able to induce a grounder or pop up when needed. Pete Van Wieren from TBS called him The Professor and for good reason.

  • The MASTER!

  • Yes Greg Maddux is great, Roger clemens prolly took staroids during recovery /or his trainer injected him, telling him it was a B-12 shot, no matter what, Roger is the best.

  • MADDUX RULES

  • Roger had an ERA over 4.50 and only one 10 games, and lost less than 15 a few times in the mid 90's, Maddux hasn't had an era over 4.50 in 20 years and only won less than 15 games ONCE in that span. Maddux is more consistent.

Clemens started great, dropped off dramatically, then magically got great again(wonder why).

  • No doubt -- Maddog is the finest modern era pitcher after Warren Spahn. I always knew something funny was up with Clemens (sucked in final years w/ Boston, then all of a sudden didn't suck anymore). Maddux has never sucked. He's still great on any staff ALL SEASON LONG, not just when he feels like it.

  • I agree. With the recent reports linking Clemens to steroids, I think that makes Mad Dog hands down the best pitcher of our generation. For a stretch in the '90s, he was absolutely filthy.

  • But Maddux has always been my favorite player. Through the basbeall network I watched every one of his starts last year besides 2. I have been doing this for several years. Anyway, 2 last points about Greg Maddux:1) For a seven year period starting in 1991, he was one of the most dominant pitchers of all time. 8 homeruns in Wrigley over 268 innings with a 2.14 ERA. 8!! 2) Greg Maddux is hands down the most consistent pitcher of all time. 13 or more wins 21 straight years never on DL. Amazing

  • No. He had ONE 15 day stint that he was forced into somewhere towards the end, even though he really felt he'd only miss one start, they put him on the DL (unwillingly) as a precaution.. 15 days out of 20 years. Find any other pitcher as dominant as he was in the last 50 years who can outdo that.

  • I love this guy. Control above power. He had a long career and still is successful due to his excellent ability to paint corners. My favorite pitcher in MLB game series for PS. Nothing feels better than to strike a guy out with a 80mph two seamer :P

  • Braves fanatic here...now that it has been discovered that Clemens is a fucking cheater, my boy Greg Maddux is without a doubt the best pitcher of this generation.

  • I miss The Master of Location.. :-(

  • i miss mad dog

  • THERES NO FUCKIN DOUBT IN MY MIND PITCHING IS AN ARTFORM AND MADDUX IS A MASTER i would give any sum of money to sit down and talk to him about pitching

  • And, gentleman that he is, if you saw him on the street he'd probably give you the most valubale pitching lesson of your life, an autograph and a handshake without thinking twice.

  • The Cubs traded Maddux for Cesar Izturis - what the heck were they thinking? That's like trading your Benz for a Pinto. Izturis did not even last a year with the Cubs. Now we're stuck with Marshall, Hill, and a horrific group of relief pitchers. Hendry was on something when he made that trade.

  • He is more of a Brave than a Cub cuz of Smoltz, Glavine, and Tommy

  • Yeah, I know. But he also had some great years with the Cubs and the stupid management never should have let him go to Atlanta.

  • he looks cool with a braves uniform.

  • wow. cubs suck. hes more of a brave than a cub

  • Thanks for that splash of class. The comment section needed it.

  • I get sick of hearing musicians called artists. Painters are artists. People who make music are musicians and singers. Maddux was my favorite pitcher back when he was winning 20 games a year for the Braves. Amazing movement and control he had.

  • lol well you better get used to it, because musicians and singers are artists as well.

  • What is their artwork? If musicians and singers are "artists", then painters and sculptors are musicians.

  • Their artwork is music. If you check the OED it defines artist as "practitioner of any of the arts", with art defined as "human creative skill or its application". Using this criterion, Greg Maddux is something of an artist -- along with musicians and painters, of course. So it looks like your problem exists only in your head.

  • You guys are so stupid.. he wasn't really ever a Cub, regardless of him starting out there. He will always be a Brave, was in his prime there, never found a groove in Chicago. I love the man but his bust in the hall will be in a Braves uniform

  • never played in a World Series in Chicago eithre. to me he doesn't look good unless i see old clips of him in a Braves uniform when he was winning Cy Young and Gold Glove Awards. he's an awsome pitcher. i've always wondered what hat he'll be wearing when they put up his plaque in Cooperstown.

  • Maddux's final year of his first Chicago tour: 35 games (all started), 20-11 with a 2.18 ERA in 268 innings, only walked 70 compared to 199 strikeouts, batters hit .206 against him (3rd lowest of his career), completed 9 games, 4 of them shutouts, won the Gold Glove and Cy Young for the NL while being named to the all star team (yes, he did hit a career high 14 batters, but only threw 5 wild pitches), hit a homer, 3 doubles, drove in 8 and had 13 sac hits at the plate, made only 3 errors...

  • Tell number 31 on the Dodgers he needs to give that number to Greg. fuckin numnuts is going to wear that number while a hall of famer is on his team who deserves his number. I'm going to miss Greg, but I saw it coming. Todd is a shocker though. Hendry smokes crack!

  • Very nice. I wish him the best and am rooting for the Dodgers to get to the playoffs for him.

  • That's so nice. He's with my Dodgers now and I feel so fortunate for them. Thank you. I love him. Have loved him since Atlanta (I didn't really get to see him his first time with Chicago). I hope he's happy. He was brilliant Thursday! :)

  • He really is amazing. His performance tonight was an honor to see in person.

  • Very nice.

Those asking about the song... Vertical Horizon "Goodbye Again"

  • yah what song is this? its a really good song and goes very well will this video.

  • I tell you, it's hard being a Cubs fan living in England right now, you talk about Maddux being traded, and all you get is polite smiles and raised eyebrows. The language over here is soccer. Too dumb to know about baseball. Sorry for blabbing. Thanks for this video, it means a lot to a lonely limey.

  • its okay

  • Whats the name of the song, and the name of the artist?

  • Nice
