the difference is toyota replaces/repairs the problem. my 02 ford taurus has the same problem, when its cold out the accelerator sticks. ford tells you what the issue is but expects you to pay for it.
No car company is perfect, but I've always questioned this whole story of "sudden acceleration." I've owned just about every car in the past 20 yrs., and I've never had such problem, nor have I known anyone personally who has. I believe it takes human intervention for the vehicle to do anything, nothing happens by itself. You move the shifter from park to any moving gear, it'll move.
I guess my grandmother is lucky this hasnt happened to her van. But It just goes to show that its NOT ONLY A TOYOTA "problem". In the 80s GM had this problem , then Ford in the 90s, then Chrysler and Toyota currently. I have always known that Ford's Cruise Control Modules were all crap. But, for all you idiots out there, FORD ISNT PERFECT!
Or they're panicking. I understand you're point, I'm a very educated and good defensive driver, but my wife has had two different vehicles fail, and she is also a very good driver. she's has two wrecks that have completely totaled her car due to recall problems. If you panic, or even don't knwo what's happening, it's not hard to lose control.
car companies should not produce a car like taco bell shells out food.. cheap and fast. it might do everyone good to have a brand that has decent quality and was made with some care.
Oh so they remedied the problem after 1995 and no newer models had the problem. Why then did the 1999 explorers have the same problem if they fixed the problem after 1995?
It doesn't matter if the engine goes to wide open throttle or not. This should never be a problem as you can always shift the trans in neutral or shut the key off. Very simple fix if it does happen.
JELH, it's real. I have a friend who has a 2003 toyota six cylinder camry, and it routinely suddenly accelerates although we are competent drivers and immediately let off the gas a little. But his powerful car surges sometimes and the computer downshifts and upshifts hard at times. At low speeds, the car will seem like it doesn't like low speeds and starts to accelerate. And further accelerates at higher speeds. This computer does not like driving a car. I prefer cable systems to drive-by-wire.
This is Sam Sero's research and is well known junk science. In the decades he's being doing this demo he has never been able to find a single real world example of the effect he describes, although 100 million of cars have been produced since he's demonstrated this back in the early 90s - Come on Sam find that one car ! - get someone out to those wrecking yards.
Well yeah but then that means that Toyota better look at electrical issues with cross wiring or bad grounding issues. Also something does not smell right..All of the sudden Toyota having problems while the Goverment has bought billions worth of GM stock..Think about it people?
@SBFHawk1 gm has had unintended acceleration problems and have killed a few people, ford has had 20 some deaths too. toyota is just getting the most press about it right now.
Of over 800 million cars in the world no one has ever conducted an accident investigation that concluded the car accelerated by itself while simultaneously losing its brakes - there have only been false complaints.
If the government owns Chrysler and GM, isn't it a conflict of interest or even against anti-trust laws for them to investigate and take action against Toyota for their recent gas pedal/ brake problems? The hubbub today is how American Auto industry is capitalizing on Toyota's problems of late.
half the time i never trust a cruise control unit in alot of newer vehicles today. Most of them today are made so when it fails in anyway it automatically is shut off until its reset by a computer.
My ma had this happen with her top of the range Honda back in 89 but Got no joy getting answers. Cant remember the model but it had steering on all four wheels.

I love how time and facts make all these old mainstream media investigations seem so ridiculous.
Driver error... and I said it from the beginning. Audi all over again, Toyota you need to sue these media companies.
