Very welcome to have a listen to AirwavesJoxfields Vegetable (Elephant ) Man with Joxfields tribute-to-David-Gilmour's-ca-1971-playing guitar at 1.59. If you make a visit; hope you enjoy it! Cheers!
Nobody seen The Pink Floyd coming, they conquered the world after dark Side Of The Moon and took psychedelic rock to the highest never before imagined! Back in the 60's nobody would have guessed Pink Floyd would be along side with The Beatles as having some of the all time best selling (and ONGOING) best selling catalog albums into the 70's, 80's, 90's, and 2000's.
@KaGribeiro Even though Syd still played guitar on this track in the studio - the continuous, one note guitar phrase is Syd's - this clip was probably filmed sometime after march/april 1968, right after Barrett 'left' the band.
lsd, like streets drugs now, can be dodgy, lacks quality control, as Syd and Green from Albatross and Fleetwood Mac found - sent them to the othere side, permanantly.
false, this song was recorded in 1968. if you new the floyd you'd know that the vast majority of songs that they recorded in the late 60's were songs they had been performing for years
I use to think boy Pink Floyd really started out crappy but got so good starting with Echos but really its because Syd left and Gilmour became more of a lead, Syd was innovative and came up with the awesome name, but really, it was Gilmour, Waters mosltly that made them sublime and sorry...no Gilmour, no Pink Floyd.
@1980MF1980 Thats your opinion. In my opinion Pink Floyd where 2 great bands. The first version with Syd Barret were amazing (and possibly my favourite). His compositions had a classic medieval English feel to them that was lost once he left the band. peace.
@1980MF1980 I agree that without Gilmour, they would have went nowhere in the 70's but without Syd to make their name in the 60's, I doubt they would have gained fame. They sucked after Syd left for quite awhile imho.
wright kinda does look like syd barret a little bit. david gilmour definately beats syd in my opinion. i really really really hate syd barrets music, sorry to say. this song isnt even my style really, its too...60s british.
Never heard this version before, seems it is edited as they must have considered it for a single. It had always been a favorite of mine from the LP. Catchy tune and very entertaining video. Despite Syd's departure, I feel that songs like these were close to being on a par with Floyd's first three Barrett penned singles.
The begining of water's war rants :O who could have guessed that this would eventually lead to the final cut. Aswell i think this would be a good song to sing if you see nick clegg since he's just a corporal really :P
@sun6moon9 Nah dude. This is definitely the studio version, and the singers on there are Gilmour, Wright and Mason. Barrett had left Floyd (and planet Earth, for that matter) by then. The only song he did on that album was Jugband Blues.
"the conservative Belgians", well they had the Jazz Bilsen fests (1965 onwards) where almost all the prog rockers were present in a very early period. It was more important than Pinkpop. Roundabouts 1980, the Fest was being thoroughly destroyed by the limey Hell Angels and it never recovered from that ...
My English ignorant friend, we rose from the mud before this you know. Hoegaarden is but a tiny segment of the beers we have, not that caramel piss you drink;) Sorry couldn't let go... It's like me saying you only eat fish & chips and drink sewage with no foam on it with it.
@theonlyantony No he didn't. The only track from Saucerful of Secrets that Syd plays on are Jugband Blues and Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun. I only know this because I too thought he played on Corporal Clegg but later read that he didn't.
@SamTalmadge ...Ha. Some would argue that never changed. But yeah, some of their early work was experimental, so it stands to reason that it wasn't perfect.
This song is called Dark Side On the Moon. It is about their old lead singer Robert Waters. He died in the insane asylum after the doctors gave him too much acid. I believe this song is on The Division Bell. That is their truly experimental phase. I read a book about these guy's. The older stuff is great eg; Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell. Two works of art. The new stuff like Pulse and Radio KAOS is not as good.
David Gilmour def has some white makeup on his face and a haircut sort of like Syd's. Especially embodies him when he starts playing the whistle. Just like the repalcement actor on the famous TV show. You want to keep that character alive in the ensemble don't you? At least for awhile. . .
There is a scene in The Floyd doc where Syd and Floyd are doodling at Mike Leonards and the camera zooms in on Syd's face and he looks a lot like Gilmour there. SO they did have a resemblance going on for a bit there.
@deltabilly1 Isn't Syd there too? There was a short time when Syd was still in the band after David joined them. I thought I saw him in a frame or two.
@itzed That's true, but this song was on Saucerful of Secrets. Syd was on the album, but not very much. He had pretty much already checked out. He was kicked out of the band before the album was finished. Syd only wrote I think one of the songs. It's possible he played on this, but he didn't sing it, and he is not on the video. Of course, he's not in the video for See Emily play either, which he wrote and sang -- Gilmour mimed his parts.
