  • Avon and Villa are like a comedy duo.

  • my two favourite shows when i was a kid, Blakes 7 and Dr Who... and boy i loved Avon...

  • he's like the outer space version of Severus Snape

  • @227060 To me he's a mix of Snape and Blackadder.

In any case, he's Avon, and he's hilarious.

  • @viperhalberd hes blackadder but without the bad luck

  • I'm not expendable I'm not stupid and i'm not going

  • They should definitely remake it. After all they have done so with Dr Who and we all know how crap that is. Blake's 7 was way cooler. I also think that Alan Rickman would be ideal to play Avon.

  • @Badrobot1500

    Alan Rickman would be great!

  • @Badrobot1500 Doctor Who rocks. im not saying this doesn't at all, but it just rocks, hard

  • They should definitely remake it. After all they have done so with Dr Who and we all know how crap that is. Blake's & was way cooler. I also think that Alan Rickman would be ideal to play Avon.

  • My first exposure to this fantastic series was in the mid 1980's. It is the best I've ever seen to date. I like Star Trek, but it does not have the depth of character, wit, and plot lines as Blake's 7 does. I would say it deserves a re-make, but that would be an injustice and would also pale in comparison to these fine actors.

  • The fades make Avon trail off at his punch-lines in the first half.

  • Guy is a class act.

  • Saved the best for last - I've often recalled that final Avon insult ever since hearing it on the original shows around 30 years ago.

  • Avon: blueprint for Blackadder?

  • @Frenchoid

Yep! If Richard Burton played Blackadder, it would be Avon:)

  • you forgot one of my personal favorites from Season 2, Killer.

Vila: *taps grasshopper container* Come on, give me a smile, show a leg. *To Avon* Do you think these make good pets?

    Avon: Vila.

    Vila: What?

    Avon: You're a fool!

  • "I have never understood why it should be necessary to become irrational in order to prove you care, or indeed why it should be necessary to prove it at all." ... You don't get lines like that anymore... or as well spoken... love you Avon... Fantastic stuff... :D

  • A YouTube fan comment once described Avon as Mr. Spock with a bad attitude. One of the best things about B7 was that unlike Star Trek’s big happy family, the B7 crew was basically made of criminals and renegades that were forced by circumstances to work together for survival. They didn’t necessarily like each other and never seemed to all bond as close friends. Creatively that was a great choice for drama and it made the characters more believable as space going brigands.

  • thanks for compiling and posting this. Avon is up there with Mr Spock and Inspector Morse - one of the great tv characters of all time.

  • Avon is one of the best characters ever.

  • here here blakes 7 goto me through university in the late 70s well that and punk rock

i was very sad the day they died and always had a crush on serverlan.sex god of a generation after debbie harry

  • Why didn't Vila just land one on him? lol

  • @Noodles37UK Because Vila values his life. =D

  • @SciFiFangirlsFTW Lol! You cheered me up.

  • Avon was pure class, you just dont see characters like that on screen these days.

  • I liked when they used to ask the computer questions . Can't remember it's name good series tho.

  • @biggixer The Liberator's computer was the straight to the point Zen and Orac was the egotistical but highly advanced computer brought on board by Blake.

  • Blake's Seven is my second favourite TV show of all time, after Dr Who. The scripts are fantastic and the narrative very compelling.

  • Avon! My childhood's major crush!!! And just having rewatched the whole series, that crush is BACK. LOL. Awesome series, best sf ever. Characterization in stead of special effects... nowhere to be found in the world of today, alas.

  • @BlackestEyes1963 - Aw - you've written everything I was going to say... Just have to say I agree with everything you've written ...

  • VILA!!!!!! *Squees in fangirlish glee*

    Oh look, Avon's there too.

    SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

  • All I remember thinking throughout this series when I watched it was "WHERE"S BLAKE!!!!!!"

  • Does the Liberator support intelligent life? Probably! The best Ship Ever!

  • avon's awesome...i just started watching the show...people have been trying to get me to watch it for a while, but it's not available in the US...well...not legally :)...maybe if BBC America got it's shit together and gave us some quality stuff, i woul'dt have to resort to such underhanded methods...the only thing BBC America does right is doctor who...and we never got Sara Jane Adventures.... and like 1 season of primeval...was time ever fixed? don't know cause BBC(A) is cheap

  • (rant on BBC America cont) and from what i read, it was like pulling teeth to get Torchwood:Children of Earth....I mean if BBC is in so much need of money...rent out some of your old shows...i would like to see Quatermass...or some newer East Enders....helloo BBC Americans love accents and drama...and we can't rely on PBS forever...I was shocked when we got the modern Sherlock Holmes...ARRGGGHHHHHH anyone in the US agreeing with me?

  • Avon was an utter utter utter bastard.

    I thought he was brilliant.

  • Blakes 7 totally beats Star Trek. and any other US sci fi show

  • @CYBERDOODY Obviously.

  • Avon's been one of my favourite characters for years. Callous, calculating, and with an acidic wit that you just didn't find at the time on TV.

  • Avon's sharp tongue haha.

  • 5 people would've been Avon's punching bag.

  • Avon's 7.

  • I Love Avon, he is amazing.

My favourite character in Blake's 7!

  • Mashallah. Great show. Great character development. Real people : not a collection of athletes with bulging biceps and smiling supermodels that feature on most modern science fiction.

  • "don't you ever get bored of being right?... No, just with the rest of you being wrong"!

  • I seem to remember him says,"and that's exactly what they will be expecting us to do" when summing up the enemy a good few times.

  • Avon. *sigh*

Love Blakes 7, and Paul Darrow was/is a legend...he made the show.

  • Avon was the man .

  • Blakes 7 was and still is brilliant. Problem is you have to forgive its weakneses which were many. But the strengths make up for it. The effects were rubbish but the stories and characters were better then anything around today.

  • BBC are remaking blakes seven with David Mitchell as Avon. Anne Robinson is playing servalan!

  • @beeschag I think the remake is a mistake...

  • @sagittaep Remakes usually are... a mistake, that is. Leave well alone, I say.

  • @beeschag Wow, David Mitchell reminds me of Paul Darrow too! That would be an awesome casting.

  • Great lines!

  • thanks for posting this, Blakes 7 was such a great show. Paul Darrow clearly had all the best lines

  • avon must be a cool dad

  • i would prefer to watch this rather than the overated star trek series.

  • @doctorw2 Yes i was watching next generation recently and it hasnt aged well it was awful to watch, this is by far much better, the dialogue beats next gens fx any day.

  • @METAL1ON Hey, maybe your fanboy mind can't comprehend this, but there are actually people watching this video who like "Star Trek." Don't get me wrong, "Blake's 7" is a great science fiction series, but we should not compare it to any series but itself.

If you want to see a really terrible sci-fi series, go check out that piece of donkey crap "Defying Gravity", or any series created by Irwin Allen. That guy was good at disaster films, but not science fiction.

  • @Scifimaster92 I like both series very much i grew up on the original star trek as well as blakes 7, but tng doesnt cut it compared to the dialogue in blakes 7, you sound like you are the fanboy.

  • Comment removed

  • @METAL1ON Hey, I was just saying that it would be unfair to compare the two shows. They are two different works of fiction with two different sets of rules, and therefore should be treated as such.

  • @METAL1ON And yes, I admit my choice of words was rather harsh, but I really have an issue with others who try to force their opinions on me. Not that you are guilty of such, but I have occasionally run into others who are guilty of doing so.

  • @METAL1ON Oh, and one other thing, it sounds you were watching the early episodes of TNG at the time of writing. If that's the case, I should probably let you know that, yes, TNG did start out a fairly average series, but over the course of its run it became really good. Just watch a later episode like "Redemption" or "The Inner Light" and you'll see what I mean.

  • @METAL1ON Okay, I admit I kind of made myself look stupid, so I'll just rephrase that whole thing. If you don't like "Star Trek," that's fine, just make others feel guilty for liking it.

  • great series loved it

  • olympic chav-spannering

  • Blake is a real story!!!

  • why is that?? Blakes 7 was science fiction at it best - before everything sci-fi had to be a action/disaster flick. Honestly....when was the last sc-fi movie/series set on someplace other than relatively modern day Earth? Shows like Blakes 7 would crush anything on TV today. I'm in the States, but this is one of my favorites...I have all 52 episodes! Terry Nation was a genius....nobody has imagination to that degree these days. Blakes 7 rules!

  • Yeah yeah yeah....but that show seemed like Lost in Space - and - the reason it seemed gay is because that dude wearing the gray robe in the clips seems a little queenie - with all his comments and eye rolling. Now Doctor Who with Tom Baker - that was the top shelf of 70's SciFi- I'm being honest!

  • Well, "Blakes 7" was created by none other than Doctor Who Dalek creator TERRY NATION. In fact, alot of the production crew that worked on 70s/80s Doctor Who also worked on Blakes 7. And B7 was less "Lost In Space" than DW was...B7 followed a band of rebels and dealt them real-life scenarios, for example covert/escape plans did not always work out, and the "good guys" sometimes didn't even come out winners at the end of an episode. Guy in grey robe?? Are you talking about Avon in the silver suit

  • Granted, Doctor Who is without a doubt top-notch for anytime given time during the 60s, 70s, and 80s...(though the new series leaves a bit to be desired, compared to the classic) but Blakes 7 aired between 1978 - 1981. Furthermore, seems a bit simple-minded if you ask me, it knock a series when all you've seen of it is a few clips on YouTube. Thats almost like new Doctor Who fans knocking the 11th, Matt Smith, when he's only had 90 seconds of screen time.

  • I would guess you never watched this series at all and have made a sweeping opinion based on a short clip that someone has put together for You Tube. Why don't you watch a few episodes, you might be surprised!

  • @sixstanger00 The real problem is that no-one has the inspiration to think of anything NEW anymore. It's all basically the same idea, over and over again...

  • @Lemau There are only two stories 1) A stranger comes to town. 2) A person starts out on a journey.

It is not so much nobody having new ideas as networks/ who ever hold the purse strings not wanting to put money on something that does not have a fan base. If the people who make the remake are able to do anything good with it the likely hood that their more "original" ideas will get produced increases.

  • @sixstanger00 The strange thing about Blake's 7 is that if you take anybody from a different story and put them in a B7 story they will end up dead and probably by mistake, including Darth Vader and the master of the universe in Dune.

Put the Liberator crew near a planet that's all sweeping valleys, fountains and peaceful vegetarian philosophers and they will turn it into Venus or scattered glowing dust inside 45 minutes.

  • @Thoughtland Yup. And again, probably by mistake. Or in the process of running away. If the Death Star ever tractored the Liberator and jailed the crew, Vila would have had them out of their cell and Orac would have overloaded the station's power and weapons reactors in ten minutes... and then they would have had to run like hell because they wouldn't have been able to _undo_ the damage.

  • Nothing better than British Sci-Fi :-D LMAO

  • Another show from my childhood. The original Starwars Newhope reminded me of this show for some reason.

  • Great compilation!

  • My appreciation of the sheer knife-like wit of Avon's lines has travelled over time in inverse proportion to my appreciation of the quality of the special effects!! Some of those one-liners are superb

  • the last one is the best

  • Nearly eight minutes of pure ZING...

  • At 4.00: probably the only 'one-up' Vila ever got on Avon

  • @chewie211171 That Avon back fired on him instantly.

  • very well done, blakes 7 had some great moments that you'd miss if you didn't watch it again. Thankyou so much for posting!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Vila deserves a compilation too. His lines were just as witty, especially when sparring with Avon. 'Incidental? That'll look good on my gravestone!'

  • Put Avon with Dr, Smith from Lost-In-Space.

"Another word from you my good man & its off with you bubble !".

  • I love Tarrant's Star Trek: Voyager outfit.

  • Hehe - he was 20 years ahead of his time!

  • Avon is a national treasure.

  • And a damn gorgeous one too.

  • Spazzy likes Avon Spazzy likes Avon...

  • Too right.

This "distillation" of the entirety of Blakes Seven just shows what great lines he got.

  • avon was fantastic , i soo loved blakes 7

  • I used to want to be on the Liberator with Blake's crew. Now I want to be on Firefly with Mal and Jayne and Wash etc.

Love both these shows SO much. Avon will always be my first (perverse!) love though...

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Excellent vid. :-)

  • brillent stuff, this was one of the bbc's best programs of the 70-80s

  • "This one's Vila, i shall introduce him now, he's at his best when he's unconscious" classic!

  • melindarann -- nice to know there are many out in reality who see the new WHO for what it is. ;)

  • Your name is familiar.

  • Kerr Avon: The ultimate anti-hero :)

  • Has anoyone seen a newscaster on the BCC called SAM McCOY , he has that paul darrow look about him but my god he sounds just like him , check him out if you get the chance lol

  • It's no wonder YOU thought it was crap zaagman if what you were watching was the quality of their spacehelmets !!!!

  • What a scounrel Avon was!

  • Or you can say that about (the new) Doctor Who. Long goodbyes and playing for tears does not make a good Sc-fi. But what Blakes 7 lost with premitive FX they made up with high enegy cut to the chase story telling, with some impecably great lines to quote.

  • Happy Birthday, Paul Darrow!

  • Which is the one where Avon eats Villa's liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti?...or have I imagined that...

  • Haha, Doctor Lecter...

  • 2:15 to 2:26 Best Avon Quote EVER! Next to, "Trust no one and you can not be betrayed." and maybe, "There are a lot of people out to get you, paranoia is simply good planning." (not sure which episodes those are from, if you know, please let me know.)

  • Blake looks like my old school PE teacher Graeme Young St Lukes School Southsea (portsmouth) UK.

  • Outstanding!

It was Avons insults that made the show for me.

  • Aw, I was hoping for his most venomous jibe, "oh but you DO...."

  • ...and that's the problem.

  • I'm thinking that Rodney McKay was the Canadian version of Avon.

  • Blake's 7 was a stunning series, and is still awesome to watch. Only Tom Baker's Dr.Who came close, but Blake's 7 had the edge with its more adult storylines and razor sharp dialogue. Thanks for the video.

  • Avon and Servalan were the best!!!!

  • agreed!

  • Classic and never bettered by anyone!

  • I only had two childhood heroes. Ric Flair was one.

    This was the other.

  • Sweet wardrobe changes, too.

Avon is probably the only individual other than Marcellus Wallace who can look badass in a turtleneck shirt.

  • He could have kept them in fashion! :)

  • Avon was my favourite thing in this series.

  • It's a toss-up as to whether Avon or Servalan put this show over the top....loved both of them!

  • Servalan was HOT... quite the sexy vixen..

  • One of my fave tv shows of all time.

  • I like that last one :-)

  • great wit! I wonder what Avon would say about Bush?

  • Great stuff but gosh, weren't the crew ever so posh.

  • Ah, BBC English. The good old days. I agree though. You'd expect the criminal class to, well, not be so hoighty toighty. Maybe it works the other way, what with Travis 2... I still love how he say co-ordinates

  • Poor Vila, the local punch bag

  • Avon was just pure class !! I think his comments should go into management training manuals :-) Only Servalan matched Avon for intellect (and dominatrix value)

  • I love how he only smiles when he's being particularly venomous.

  • Avon is the best. Blake and the rest of them were pointless.

  • i love it! aaah, ive missed avons' wit.

  • avon-oscar wilde of the galaxy.

  • Hahh at 1:31 they're playing AstroMonopoly - would love to see the property on that board - what would the utilities be?

  • Does anyone know if the internet rumour is true about a new script being written for a new series of blakes 7? I hope so apart from doctor who being recreated there arent many brit sci fis that are being kept alive, i rally do hope they are remaking b7 it was one of my faves as a kid.

  • Yes it is true

  • hahaha:) Avon is the best, dry sarcasm:) Gan about Blake " He won't be alone, I'll stay with him" Avon: "Ok, so almost alone" hahaha:)

  • Ooh the episode I refer to is on youtube. How exciting.

    /watch?v=299P6uM1C3U&feature=related

    just after 2 minutes.

  • This is great, but misses my favourite, which I really liked because I only noticed the put-down the second time I watched it:

It was in the episode called "Orbit".

Egrorian, big scientist type, is looking at Avon and Villa, and is not sure which one Avon is.

Egrorian asks "Which one of you is Avon?"

Avon answers "I am. That... is Vila."

Where the put-down is entirely dependent on the timing and enunciation of the word "that".

I think. Watch it, you'll see!

  • Love Avon's intelligence. Just wish I had it on tap!

  • I loved Avon the best because he was such a bitch!

and Servalan second for obvious reasons :)

  • Luv Avon!!B still my heart!!lolz!

    great vid!!

  • Excellent. Thanks!

  • Very good. Although you have missed his best.

"OK. You've made your impression, you can sit down now"

    "What?"

"She knows that you're very brave. Now sit down"

  • This is awesome! I'm a big fan of his, as you can see. :) Thanks!! Now if we could just get the DVDs in America...

  • This is a great compilation. I like the one about Blake being in onr tree and Travis being in another.

  • "Less reason to care" shouldn't have been in there, it's probably the only instance of Avon being nice about Vila.

  • Thanks for this. A highly entertaining 487 seconds.

I think you might have captured a good 70% of his best lines.

  • A wonderful compilation. I'd forgotten some of those jibes. I adored this series for the badinage!

  • I loved this show and used to be allowed to stay up late (to half past eight! :D) to watch it :) Perhaps it was a formative influence on my sense of humour ... Thanks, I really appreciated the trip back in time :)

  • Hey...can i know who the actors are in this? if anybody knows? Some of them seem very familiar.

    thanks.

    :D

  • Avon is played by Paul Darrow, Blake by Gareth Thomas, Villa by Michael Keating...forgot the others temporarily!

  • gan was David Jackson, Serverlan was Jaqueline Pierce... not sure about others but can find out

  • There's a full cast list in the Wikipedia article on Blake's 7.

  • Tarrant is Steven Pacey. Cally was Jan Chappell. Jenna - Sally Knyvette.

  • i used to love this as a kid.. Avon was always my favourite and I thought he was funny. Great Memories.. thanks

  • We used to "play Blakes 7" - I was usually Tarrant.

It's amazing that such a dark story captured so many children's imaginations in the UK. And some of the scenes of violence and torture were truly harrowing. They'd never go out at 8:30 these days.

    I loved it!

  • i am not stupid

    i am not expendable

    and i am not going..

you know, i should put that on a t shirt!

  • "Staying with you requires a degree of stupidity of which I no longer feel capable."

    "Now you're just being modest."

Brilliant. Put that on a T-shirt too!

  • 3:30 ROTFL...

  • You skipped Cally's response to Vila's question at 2:29. "You missed something." I did too, until my sister pointed it out.

  • People can say what they like about the 'look' of the show, or how this or that element of it has aged, or was no good to start with - wit and character development are rare and will carry the day.

  • Fantastic! thank you for the memories :o)

  • Cool

  • Check out my compilations of Servalan as well.

  • funny.
