Could an EE tell me why go over the trouble of converting DC from a battery into AC just to converted back into back into DC via the PC power supply. Why not a way to by-pass the PC PSU, and provide DC directly? Maybe because of many different voltages a PC PSU generates for the PC?
@mrbeady9 because it doesn't suck. It's only because low end PC's can't really run it because of the ram issue. That's why windows 7 can even work for low end systems because the lowered the ram requirement for it.
a surge protector will not protect against lightning strikes. and if you read the warranty information. lightning strikes are not covered under the warranty.
Agreeable! Do NOT buy a UPS for serge protection... Buy it for battery back up. Serge protection is a scam! Read the warranty people, it says "Warranty void under acts of God" and we all know that could mean anything. The only reason people actually get paid if they do lose something to lightning is because the dollar value for your 'thing' is less costly then taking your dumbass to court and WINNING. And they will win, I guarantee it.
Oh I need so much an UPS, Every month I change something in my computer because of power fluctuations... The bad part is when I lose a hard drive, lucky me that I have RAID... But I have a question: A UPS can work in combination with a power generator?
@bluesmoke21 Theory-wise, a UPS and a power generator could work together in that the UPS keeps the computer (and what else is plugged into it) running after a power-outage whilst the generator takes its time to start up and provide power.
If you are having these types of problems, like Linus' parents were having, I would contact your local power company and a licensed electrician or two and have them inspect the wiring of your house, and the line coming to the house from the power lines.
It sounds like the wiring in both of these houses is faulty or otherwise insufficient, or there is not enough voltage/amperage available to support the devices you have plugged in.
@FHCTech Yeah, thanks for the advice! It's not just me... is the entire neighborhood with this problems. We have Enel around here. And Enel is a biiig fucking corporation, that doesn't care about their customers. I'm looking for alternative enegry sources anyway. So fuck Enel. :))
i dont have a UPS but i do have a line conditioner that protects my computer from my window air conditioner which sends a big spike through my rooms wiring every time it kicks on and i can actually hear the line conditioner correct the voltage. it has also been protecting my computer from the other window unit, our big 240v 80 gallon shop air compressor, lightning, and just the lights flickering at random. in the middle of a storm once, lightning stuck and knocked out everything but my comp
Linus got it all wrong too. You guys are stupid. UPS is United Parcel Service. Which shipped him the power supply thingy that he did this Tech Tip on.
Ups's are great, I have 4 of them so far (1 x 350 va, and 3 x 750 va). The ones I use to backup my desktop are modded to run off of a 12 volt deep cycle marine battery (125 amp hour vs the stock 3.4 - 9 amp hour batteries). The only bad thing about ups's is they are not very efficient on battery, so I will only get up to 7 hours of battery life with my modded system. It's still a lot better than the 1 min max I got with stock batteries. Realistically in an emergency I would not run the pc long.
what about a good PSU... as i know most of them have surge protection...so the point of having UPS is if u need clean power and some extra time to save and shutdown your PC...btw good UPS should be HEAVY! :D
cool video. i have a belkin pf40 power console (264,000 amps and 7700 joules protection). 10 power sockets, aerial, cable tv, satellite and ethernet protection. ;)
I've found another use for a small UPS - hot water heater. I've switched to an inline tankless natural gas heater, and with the electronics involved, no power means no hot water. With a $40 UPS it will last over a day without power.
Nice outtake at the end, don't you just hate seeing "signal not found" and realizing that was the WRONG power cord unplugged. :)

Pointless to buy UPS for a gaming system for no reason unless you are using high capacity of power 24/7 then you need this UPS otherwise you are wasting money or you are a idiot
UPS are mostly integrated wtih your home supply at home so pointless to buy another one .
this is an Uninteruptable Power Supply, no home electrical system in the world has a big battery sitting at the main switch you fucking idiot, and i myself have a $180 surge protector protecting my 3 computers near my feet and infront of me as i want to make sure a surge wont kill my $6500 of hardware that i use
UPSs not only protect the system from power outages, it also helps to filter the power coming in. Unless you have an alternate power source (which is basically a UPS for the whole house) then you really should have one.
UPSs also have better surge protectors than just the regular surge protectors (usually).
haha u took out the wrong power cable in the blooper XD, almost happened to me ;p
in the year im using an ups i've only noticed a brown?? w/e once.( noticed that the light flickered)
so except from that its been almost useless here, cuz right after i bought it the powerlines or how to call them were pretty stable.
furthermore they come with a heavy price and the best i could afford came from "Trust" which in most cases isn't to be trusted, its working but i dun like the noise..
I don't get powercuts but I do get rather large overvoltage. I never knew until I bought a ups for my WHS and noticed it going on to battery at least 2-3 times a week! Well worth the money.
I don´t know if it´s tru but I heard that the electrical grid in USA is quite bad and that´s why you get that voltage "inregulation" among some other things.
That´s just what I heard. I do´nt live in USA myself.
Where I live (Sweden) it´s usually only companies that need a UPS and that´s basicly only if there would be a "power blackout", which is pretty rare in Sweden.
The past year there has only been 2 "power blackouts" where I live.
Yeah, you probably live in the city though, it's an entirely different story in the country or especially on an island, I live in BC on a small island and the power goes out like once every two weeks in the winter. The most it was out for here was for 6 days...kind of exciting lol.
Oh man, I think I would like that. It would give me a good excuse to build a whole alternate power source of solar and wind and make a big battery backup system. That would be awesome.
Heheh, yeah but that can get pretty damn expensive. But oh well I actually like power outages...gives you a break from things like work, tv, computer...you know.
that's a bad-ass UPS & yes more people should be buying them !
Most often people buy those cheap power strips that call themselves 'surge protectors' when in fact their joule rating is so low that it wouldn't protect them against a decent spike.
Then they wonder why their power supply went bad or their motherboard got fried !?
my ups was necessary in my old appartment cause it had serious power issues and killed like 2 motherboards. once i added the ups i haven't had any problems with my computer.
Well I guess you never had 25 (yes 25 is not an exaggeration) stray cats around your house that get into the attic then chew and urinate upon the wiring!!! Just remember never let anyone in your family start feeding a stray cat, neeevvvveerrr!!! I hate cats now, I mean I really hat cats!!! I can tell you honestly that I had trouble sleeping because they would have cat orgys up there, man!!!
well I wouldn't say that... power goes out here from time to time, especially during the winter :( power lines kind of suck... it can be annoying to have no warning
I would have to say practically useless, unless you live in a third world country like india or pakistan, there the power goes down on a daily basis and for many hours..
My UPS battery died about 2 years ago... I have yet to buy one. The price on the high-end ones is quite a lot. My area doesn't get a lot of power issues, but I need to get one again.
