Oh i am so sorry to read this,i remember him coming to play for Blackburn Rovers circa 1958 when i was a schoolboy,he turned footy on its head for us and he is still referred to as the first playboy football star in our area, beauty queen girl friend and all the trappings, declared himself fit to play in the 1960 C final against wolves but obviously wasnt fit, great player and great man he carried the nickname cheyanne with us because he was the first to have a mohican hair style.RIP,bodie, cheers
as a native of belfast and a celtic fan i would have taken big derek on my team anytime.he was a real gentleman ,i just read his book the sash i never wore, he grew up protestant he was never a bigot and respected his fellow man ,when i was young i used to copy him heading the ball he was great with the head . rip derek .
When Derek retired he gave his all to help old footballers down on their luck, this explains a lot about the man, a true legend with a big heart, believe me, I was told this by one of the people he helped.
Ya your dead right there mate,he helped out another old Blackburn player who had fell on hard times, Fred Pickering he was called,DD was the tops for sure,i didnt realise he had died untill i watched this Vid.
Honestly, I have never heard of this man, nor the team he played for. But, I want to pay respects to him and to those who cared for him. The Johnny Cash version of Danny Boy is one of my favorites and it fits so beautifully in this video. R.I.P. DOOG!
Not much said about his time at Kettering Town FC in the mid 70s. Well, he was a true gent and good manager. Every away match he would come on the coach and thank us for coming. He also had time for everyone. RIP big man. Simon Nelson, Torbay.
I seen the Doog with all of his clubs bar Wolves,. I seen him first at Distillery in Belfast and when I worked in England I made it to most of his games. I remember seeing him against Chelsea playing for Peterborough at the Bridge and a bus load of Villa? supporters told me they had travelled down to see the Doog, he was a legend.
I say this to you Mr Swain,(Express&Star) there is a time and place for everything, this was certainly neither for your scathing remarks about a man who will be remembered long after you.
Where ever you are Derek, from me Tony, and my family RIP. If there is a God, you will surely be in his team, along with Chopper(Clamp) Jimmy Mullen, and the great William Ambrose Wright. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
Saw him score for Posh as we beat mighty Arsenal 2-1 in 1965 FA Cup , a sensation at the time. This great man signed ny scrapbook of pictures over 30 times after I left it at his Peterborough home when I was 5.
"For me, football is a way of life, which i have continued to live after my retirement from the playing side of it. And i shall go on living the game, until the final whistle."
Sincerest condolences go out to Derek's sons Al and Nick at this difficult time. A dark day for everyone who knew The Doog. I doubt we'll see anyone like him for a long long time, if ever. A very sad day.
My family and I spent a fortnight with Doog, his wife and children in Ibiza in 1970. He was enormous fun and my Mom and Dad said he was amazingly knowledgeable and cultured. A few years ago, my Dad, not long before his own death, ran into him and Doog, over 30 years later, could still remember what book my Mom was reading at the time. A great figure and an unrepeatable centre forward. Condolences to his family.
Derek's Neices, Allana, Amanda, Lisa & Josephine, would like to thank everyone who has shown their support at this time. Derek was a talented sportsman and a legend who will be terribly missed. A big thank you to Wolves Fan No 1 for taking the time and being so thoughful in putting this tribute together. Our Dad, Derek's youngest brother, sincerely appreciates this. Derek would have been proud :) Love to you all, The Dougan Girls.
Standing on the North ban shouting Doog! Doog!, many childhood/teenage memories. I met you when I was 10 and looked up along way then. I still look up a long way. RIP, and may you be remembered only with fondness.
Believe me, I understand this whole "copyright" thing that YouTube has going on here. None-the-less, I loved your video. 5 stars for you :)
