I think that new Galactica looks like that Ryan Church monstrosity of the new Star Trek movie. Out of place, and horribly plagerarised! It looks like it is still under construction, and more primitive than this one does. In fact, Glen Larson is kicking around the idea of re-doing the original in a full-length motion picture. It will be like Hulk, and The Incredible Hulk. Two different animals compared. I really didn't like the new rendition of that show. The actors were awesome, bad storyline.
I enjoyed the new version. I have all the DVD's now, but I still like the original better. The point of the new series is, a society that became so dysfunctional and decadent were destined to destroy themselves. The problem I had with the new one is the over emphasized everyone's character flaws. In the original version, the colonies did not get nuked. They were swarmed by wave after wave of cylon fighters which killed everyone up close and personal. could not show on 1970's TV.
Cylons were always Rescuing Baltar. they never showed them rescuing him from Kobol (Lost planet of the gods 2pt ep) but it was implied when he showed back up to challenge Both Adama and Commander Cain (the Living Legend 2 pt ep) Unless your reffering to the Eastern Alliance episodes... Inwhich case Baltar was recaptured before he could escape because they screwed up his cylon pilots and they destroyed the flight controlls, "Back to the Brig, Traitor!" so he never escaped Colonial Custody.
The original "Battlestar Galactica" was actually a pretty good show until someone (probably Glen A. Larsen) got the bright idea to have Baltar surrender and put the emphasis on the Galactica trying to find Earth. They eliminated the Cylons until the final episode and replaced them with The Eastern Aliance. Since the show had a continueing storyline, the fact that it was preempted every other week didn't help either. What should had been considered a classic series had instead gotten a bum rap.
WAY ahead of it's time as far as special effects are concerned. However...Glenn Larsons influence on the show made for cheesy scripts. I always felt like I was watching Charlie's Angels In Space.
Long live the Original Battle Star Galactica, where men were still men and we women were respected as moms as well as officers.
I'm glad to see the New Series flopping on Amazon/Indigo Sales. 60% off and now they're offering Free Shipping too.
On Ebay so many are selling their New Series some have NO bids, I got 1 season for $10. But no-one selling Original Series which is actually up in price.
Indigo told me they are on back orders for the new series. Cool.
You'll find it's 50/50 some prefer the old, others prefer unauthentic cgi and pretty colours. wft is with the cylons in the new one. They look too human.
We 3 roommates weren't even born when this series made but our parents bought dvds. I work in programming for Cable Provider. You might be interested to know that the original series had far higher ratings but was cancelled because Star Wars people sued them. The new series just kept falling in our polls of subscribers. Main complaint was it wasn't science-fiction anymore, but gender-fiction. Men are redundant, inferior, men even women stopped watching. & the religion thing too. It's cancelled.
Wow! I had no idea that the star wars people sued them! God...,what for? That was alway's such a mystery to me why they cancelled it! I just love the original series too!So cool,so neat! Just plain awesome!Such great memories when I hear the opening music! Really, nothing today can even hope to compare! Yea,what was the deal with all the "rough" looking girls in this new one? The original had some real beauty's! Several. They were no wimpy girls either! I hope t.v. will return to what's good!
George Lucas sued Glen Larson and he was wasting his time.Glen Larson created Galactica 15 years before Star Wars and at first Universal Studios was not interested.Lucas even had trouble selling and there was a report Larson offered to help Lucas get the project off the ground and Universal was the first studio Lucas offered Star Wars to.And that Lucas knew Larson had already created Galactica.Perhaps he was afraid of the competition.Larson's Cylons can kick the Empire's ass in a space war.
it wasnt just the blasters he was sueing over. He went after John Dykstra for sharing his SFX techniques he used in star wars to help make BSG tv every as bit as good as Star Wars was, which is why there were no aditional space battle sequeces all they had was stock footage from the movie which they reused by flipping the shot every once in a while to atleast give the apearance there was more done. And even an early draft of the script had skywalkers name in it as a place holder for casting.
which is why apollo was the straight laced and fly right pilot (Modeled after Luke), and Starbuck (Modeled after Han) was always reckless, got the girls, and the best damned pilot you ever saw. Elderly father figure (Lorne Greene/Obi-Wan) Ex Friend of said father figure turned bad (Baltar/Vader) ect ect ect. there were a number of things that Lucas was itemizing in his suit against Glen Larson and Co.
Maybe there's coincidences but don't forget that Larson counter-sued against Lucas and co for taking the droids from Silent Running and using them in Star Wars. It cuts both ways...
@WatchRyder very true, but even Lucas stated that even his own masterpiece was infact, a ripoff of both an old Japanese/chinese tale about 2 slaves basically telling the story of world events happening all around them ergo who the droids were fashioned around, and wich is why R2-D2 and C-3PO are in every movie of starwars, And a rip off an an Adventure story modeled around Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe. So even Lucas cannot claim originality, because he borrowed from everyone else.
@LordBicen Yeah, I think it was a big rip off , although I don't know how much it was Larson or the companies. Larson had the idea almost 10 years before it became reality, and the execs must have insisted on him injecting a lot of star wars elements to try to get some of the star wars money
like it or not, it's the facts, and just because you disagree with them because your in the Lucas camp still doesn't change the facts as they are and were.
Thank you so much frankdc65, you really gave me a good day with this remembrance video. I still can't find something that makes me a fan of the new series, even the music is far superior; it was powerful and heroic. Thanks again.
I watched David Letterman in which he had the cast of the remak on there doing the Top Ten.BORING.Listen to the audience's reaction to them.Had this been the surviving cast members the reception would had been different and better.
In the re-imagined series, however, the line between man and machine is suddenly not so distinct and this makes for food for thought on an epic scale. It starts making the the characters question what it is that makes them human and indeed what makes them a species worth saving
The cylons in the new series modeled themselves after humans in order to infiltrate societies of the thirteen colonies and seek to become more organic in order to fulfill God's comandment, namely: procreation. This concept is the crux of the entire new series. In the orginal BSG, Cylons were easily distinguishable from humans and humans were clearly the "good guys".
Something I never got: Why, if Cylons are created by us, are we having such a hard time understanding/distinguishing them? In this neither series makes sense. Because the robots of the classic show more resemble generic tools that we might create. But new, 'more advanced', Cylons shouldn't need or want to be like their creators if they have no respect for their former owners. For this alone the new series comes off as cheap (human actors representing robots) where the old one was 'alien'.
I am a fan of Battlestar Galactica and a member fo a starfleet Columbia NV and member of the fan club of Battlestar Galactica the classic version. This video fo the original version si so good and i remember all of it.

Having the cylons as the bad guy each week was overkill
They were getting deeper into space and farther away from the Cylons
If there had been a second season Baltar would of been rescued by the Cylons who picked him up on the planet where Adama left him

I read that Geogre Lucas sued the BSG people because they were going to call there guns "Blasters" like they are in Star Wars.
Lucas said the name "Blasters" is copywrited & thats why in any scifi movie / tv show (except a Star Wars thing) laser guns arent called Blasters.
