The only difference is that one was generally trying to control people for the better and teach them how to live with respect and consideration for others and the other was born of the bigotted extremist attitudes of a relatively small bunch of people.

No what I am saying is that is wrong to tell a child that they have to believe in religion or else there will be consequences.The whole idea in a nutshell is "believe in this or you are less of a person"Those may not be the exact words that are being taught but ideas like, original sin or confession make a kid feel like no matter what he does he will always need religion to be perfect and to be happy.You can not tell a child these things because a kid would believe out of fear rather than fact

( A bit late) I agree with exactly what you're saying. A child is allowed free will just like every other person. Even dogs can make choices for themselves but no one tells them there are any consequences so why force children?

dogs don't have free will, they were not made in God's image and therefore do not have the freewill humans have, therefore they can not sin meaning they may or may not go to heaven based on what God allows.

Also, you can not be force to believe anything, because free will is the one thing nobody can take away, you always have a choice and always will, making sin a choice (hence why we need a savior).
