I think what a lot a of people don't understand is that anti-semitism goes back a really long way. It wasn't just Hitler that felt this way about the Jews, most people hated the Jews for many reasons. Jews had/have been a scape goat for the worlds problems for hundreds of years before WWII.

I must agree that this is a wonderful movie, however, Hitler was not the worst person who lived, Stalin killed 20 million of his own people in just as horrible ways. It's just something to think about.

However, Stalin's killings were over a longer period of time-Hitler's were a large amount in a short time. Also Hitler's killings were thought out and targetting specific groups of people not to mention he truly believed they were an inferior race-Stalin was just trying to eliminate the opposition

Stalin was not even the grand champion, Mao killed more. However, it's not a competition or a numbers game. Hitler's distinctiveness comes from his attempt to eliminate whole biological groups, for ever and ever. That was real genocide - the attempt to eliminate an entire "genos" or genetic group. Stalin killed "class enemies", but guess what, his "class enemies" re-emerged and are thriving today. The East European Jews on the other hand, with their unique culture, are gone forever.

It's a common misperception to associate National Socialism with racist anti-Semitism. Just because someone believes in an alternative political system it doesn't necessarily mean they condone genocide.

Really? When 16 out of 20 points in the party program were anti-Jewish in one way or another, and Hitler made a speech in 1939 "predicting" the "annihilation of the Jewish Race in Europe"? Their "alternative political system" was a system without Jews, and their moral system viewed mass killing as part of the Darwinian struggle for survival. 2+2=4: you couldn't believe all that and not condone genocide.

Well, not quite. Polanski did survive in hiding as a child, but in Krakow, not Warsaw. The movie is based on the memoirs of Wladyslaw Szpilman, and it's not quite true to Szpilman's story. It has been tampered with to make a better movie.

The titles are wrong. More is known about Hosenfeld than that died in a Soviet camp - his family had his diary and letters. He was an anti-Nazi soldier who helped others besides Szpilman - Poles as well as Jews.

Depends on how you define Nazi. Someone who believes in Nazi ideology? Then you're right. Someone who joined the Nazi party? Then there were a lot of apolitical types who did it to advance their careers - Oscar Schindler, for example - and a few who infiltrated the party to see if they could sabotage it - like Kurt Gerstein, who tried to pass word about the camps to the Swedes. Who then sat on it, so as not to compromise their neutrality.

Why? Because that's how it happened. Szpilman is a real person and this is his story, in the form of a film. And people help him which shows compassion on an individual level, and is a fascinating story about how the holocaust affected families and individuals - something discarded in textbooks when people consider a raw figure of the number killed. And believe it or not, not every Nazi was inherently evil, as much as a product of circumstance.

i watched this movie in history over the past 4 lessons, its so moving, it really made us well up. How they threw that guy out of the window when he couldnt walk! and shot that women in the head just because she asked where they were going!

It was sick and I can't believe they actually did that!

By the way, the story of the guy being thrown out of the window was one of the liberties Polansky took with the story. In Szpilman's memoir, that incident happens outside the ghetto and the guy thrown out the window was Polish, not Jewish.
